Cambridge Wine tops list of the UK's 50 Best Independent Drinks Merchants

Cambridge Wine Merchants took the top spot in the UK’s 50 Best Indies Awards 2017, which was announced last night at the annual Think Indie, Drink Indie event in London.

Cambridge Wine Merchants took the top spot in the UK’s 50 Best Indies Awards 2017, which was announced last night at the annual Think Indie, Drink Indie event in London.

Voted for by a 100-strong countrywide judging academy  drawn from the independent sector, the awards are designed to recognise and honour the independent merchants that have done the most to drive forward quality and innovation in the retail of wines, beers and spirits, while engaging their customers and providing a benchmark for the trade.
Andrew Catchpole, editor of Harper’s Wine & Spirit, which organized the event, said “Cambridge Wine Merchants tops our list this year with a well-deserved win for its fantastic mix of great portfolio, off and on-trade blurring of the traditional boundaries, and strong wholesale arm”.
“Established in 1993 by Hal Wilson and Brett Turner, Cambridge now has an eight-strong estate, including wine bars, offering a beacon of liquid good taste across the Cambridgeshire and southern English landscapes. If individual and captivating wines, beers and spirits are your thing, then Cambridge Wine prides itself on offering excellent value, range and service, clearly remaining committed to its founding ethos: To be the best independent wine merchant in the country, and to have fun doing it.”
Hal Wilson said: "It means a lot that this award is from nominations from other independent merchants. I am delighted that everyone sees we are working hard and hopefully it is slightly inspiring for other people that may want to rise into this top 50 list in the future."
Two other local companies are in the Top 10 with Noel Young Wines coming in at #6 and The Old Bridge, Huntingdon at #9.
“Having three of the very best wine merchants in the country on your doorstep is cause for celebration, and we’ve got just the wines to help you with that. ” said Hal Wilson.

Cambridge Wine Merchants has 5 wine shops and wine bars in Cambridge, and three franchises in Royston, Ampthill and Salisbury.
Branches at 2 King’s Parade, 31 Bridge Street, 42 Mill Road, 163 Cherry Hinton Road and Cambridge University Centre, Granta Place.
