Dr. Pauly Bergweiler, Bernkastel-Kues

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler, Bernkastel-Kues
Centered around the picturesque medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues, Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler holds 16ha of vineyards between the villages of Brauneberg and Erden. Perched on precipitous slopes of Devonian slate, more than three-quarters of their vineyards qualify for Steillage status, meaning they have slope angles of more than 45 degrees and viticulture is rendered almost wholly manual by physical necessity.

What we say:
Pale, deft and zesty and enticing. A Perfect example of Mid-Mosel dry Riesling – delicate white peach fruit, cool slate mineral. Top grower, all estate fruit.
Bergweiler’s wine making is modern, searching after terroir character with gentle parcel by parcel vinification in stainless steel tanks, and producing cool, delicate and mineral rich Riesling. In fine vintages they produce a full range of Prädikat wines, their Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese striving for balance as well as hedonistic unctuousness. Their finest vineyard holding is a small monopollage immediately adjacent to the famed Bernkasteler Doctor, producing wines of similar intensity and complexity to its fabled neighbour. Alongside their Riesling production, they have a small parcel of Spätburgunder planted on Graacher Domprobst, where the presence of some clay in the soil enables these vines to thrive. A brilliant selection of wines at a diversity of price points, their entry level Rieslings are excellent restaurant pours with bright acidity and classic Mosel slatiness.
