Very cloudy mid gold. Fabulous nose: intensely aromatic, lightly floral, apricot, orange, lime, dried grasses, the complexity of the blend and the winemaking working together. Intense freshness too, gentle grip, a touch of baked apple but not overly oxidative. You could drink this on its own, despite the firm tannin texture, or with food. Long, complex and mouth-watering, delicious. Full-throttle skin-fermented white yet fully harmonious, showing how well suited the aromatic varieties are to this style of winemaking, if handled with care and not overdone. Utterly refreshing but not in the least simple."

The idea of this wine came out during a curious meeting between wine experts: Valentino Sciotti, today CEO of the Farnese Group, Filippo Baccalaro, chief winemaker of the same group and third generation of Piedmontese winemakers, Hugh Johnson, the most famous wine journalist in the world, and Jean Marc Sauboua of the third generation of Bordeaux winemakers. During that particular meeting, 18 years ago, Hugh Johnson launched a challenge to the two young winemakers: that of creating a great wine with the character of Southern Italy, forged with the best varietals of that territory; a wine with the modest name of table wine, but with the soul of a great wine, that stands out for its ability to be unique and extraordinarily superior to what the market offers. Deep golden in colour, this mature late-harvest Pinot Gris is richly aromatic with baked pear, quince, apricot conserve, honey and candied citrus, layered with smoky spice and a hint of marmalade. Lusciously sweet and full-bodied, yet beautifully balanced by piercing acidity, it finishes long and complex with notes of caramelised apple, ginger and bitter orange. Excellent with foie gras, blue cheese, tarte tatin or fruit-based desserts.

While this claret still has serious layers of tannins, it also delivers considerable ripe black-fruit flavours. The estate in the Figeac sector of Saint-Emilion has produced a powerful wine that is firm and that will age further. Drink from 2025 Deep ruby. A small family-run bodega near the village of Navarrete, in the heart of Rioja D.O.C., making wines of great integrity and some finesse. It was founded in 1918 and is today run by Antonio Navajas and his wife. This is a big favourite of many of our customers and on a 'value for money' basis it is not hard to understand why.

Cool climate freshness and fragrant sweet, ripe cherry and blackberry flavours, with firm, ripe tannins. Blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Mouvedre, Viognier. Drinking well now and suitable for cellaring for at least 10 years.

Kanonkop's Pinotage comes from 63-year-old unirrigated bush vines grown on the estate. Bright ruby-red hues. A textbook Stellenbosch Pinotage with aromatic and spicy aromas of mulberry, raspberry and cinnamon. Muscular, well-integrated tannins add great structure. Flavours of bramble, violets, plums and black berries are balanced by scented new oak. An elegant wine with savoury notes on the lengthy finish, and a lifting underlying freshness.

54% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay 3g sugar Dosage Expressive notes of white peach, honeysuckle and quince on the nose, followed by some brioche and exotic fruits. On the palate the champagne is full and quite open, beautifully balanced and with real richness, with touches of ginger and apricot jam.

Something of Pouilly-Fuissé in the style here, a rich oak-infused nose, but on the palate linear, mineral and refined. Elegant, broad and complex, so unlike other English chardonay. Super-premium estate sited in the warmest, driest corner of England, near the coast and Malden (of posh salt fame). This south-facing ridge enjoys an exceptionally long warm growing season - so rare in England. Our old friend John Atkinson, Master of Wine, who is an expert on cool-climate viticulture, is enthusiastically involved. Winemaker is Liam Idzikowski who boasts long experience in English wine-making; backed by owners the Bunker family, the winery is an astonishing no-expense-spared jewel in the crown for English wine.

A wild ferment, aged in old French oak.

Jasper Morris MW87-90/100 Also quite a pale colour. The bouquet is a little more pronounced in fresh raspberry fruit, pleasing rather than massive. Very stylish, with a good fruit acid balance. More classic Sauternes style. Rich stone fruits, a smoky backbone, and a syrupy finish. Declared a 1er Cur Classé at the 1855 Sauternes and Barsac Classification, Château Coutet has been producing wine since 1643. Boasting both the largest vineyard in Barsac (thirty-eight-and-a-half hectares) as well as the largest cellar (110 meters), Château Coutet has been owned by the Baly family since 1977 and managed by Aline Baly since 2009. 95% Sémillon, 4% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Muscadelle. RS 158 g/l. Golden colour, with marmalade and smoky nose. Very concentrated and sweet palate, unctuous, with botrytis evident and great length. Impressive.

Le Général is a suitably serious, even patrician blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 8% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot from the cooler Jonkershoek Valley. Framed by 40% new French oak, it has ample colour and concentration, damson, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit and a firm, brooding finish.

Made from Tinto Fino (the grape that established the region’s fame, also called Tinta del Pais, a local variant of Rioja’s Tempranillo) and a tiny small percentage of Grenache, mostly older vines from 630 plots from 21 different villages. Made at seven different cellers using two selection tables and their own tanks. Vinification takes place in traditional concrete tanks and has aged during 18 months in a mix of second and third year oak barrels used for the Pingus and also in large Foudres, avoiding voluntarily the use of new wood.

Here’s something you don’t come across everyday…a Nebbiolo/Cabernet blend that is fermented and aged in concrete egg. The choice of fermentation vessel aids circulation during teh ferment which imparts depth, volume and texture to the resultant wine. This fabulous wine not only has a cool, egg-shaped label, but drinks beautifully, showing bright acidity and a lovely balance between sweet blackcurrant fruit and something altogether more savoury and herbal. The finish is clean and multi-layered. It has a purity of fruit that allows the drinker to experience the flavours of BNebbiolo without the normal oak influence tasted in Piemontese versions.
