Low yielding Barbera tended on some great Nizza sites sees careful winemaking to produce this lush style. If you like your Barbera rich, dark and silky, then this is the wine for you.

This Syrah blend with soft black fruits and spice has been shaped by the sunbaked rocky soils of the Languedoc hinterland. A herbal, spicy bouquet is followed by youthful red cherries and supple mineral character derived from the schist rich soils.

The Ripasso method beefs up the sometimes weedy Valpolicella by the addtion of Amarone lees which starts a second fermentation and adds body. With complex red fruit aromas, this well balanced full-bodied wine is velvety smooth with harmonious tannins

For several generations, the Clavels have run this estate, founded in 1934 on the right bank of the Rhône, whose vast area (80 ha) allows them to offer a wide range of wines. Today, it is Claire who has been at the helm of this organic estate since 2008. Very consistent in quality and best known for its Côtes-du-Rhône and its Saint-Gervais villages. Juicy, fruity and versatile Southern Rhone red from Claire Clavel whose vineyards lie in Saint Gervais, one of the 'Villages' of the Cotes du Rhone.

Really delightful wine from a top vineyard site in Santenay village, made from very old vines. Santenay is a bit tucked away from the better known Burgundy villages and the wines are well worth checking out. We think Sam and Lenaic Legros make the best red Santenay of all the producers, picking late and making heady, dark and voluptuous wines that put a smile on your face. Top class Pinot Noir that lovers of good Burgundy will like but also people who like New World Pinots too.

UKAN is the new project of the youngest generation of the famous Eguren family. We highly recommended them and they are freshly arrived in the UK. UKAN is a small winery that follows the Bordeaux model and is focused in producing a great wine in very limited quantities. Founded by Koldo Eguren, fifth generation of the family, with the winemaking collaboration of his cousin Eduardo. Together, they seek to reflect the Rioja Alavesa landscape into a unique wine using knowledge acquired from previous generations and adding a younger, more contemporary vision that both have learned in their international experience. The foundation of the project is in the vineyard, where a sustainable and ecological viticulture is practiced. This care for detail is spread into the winemaking process, fully hand-crafted, that takes place in the winery located in Laguardia. Senderos de UKAN is the result of a careful selection of Tempranillo vineyards from different villages in Rioja Alavesa, mainly planted on limestone soil. There is great energy, freshness and character here, moreish yet impressive with every taste.

Deep ruby red in colour with a purple hue, this wine displays intensely fruity red berry aromas of raspberries and cherries, floral notes and a touch of spice and chocolate. Well structured, fresh and fruity on the palate with soft, rounded tannins and a long velvety finish.

Redcurrant jelly and raspberries on the nose lovely juicy fresh raspberry fruit on the palate with gentle, ripe tannins and some complexity but deliciously drinkable!

UKAN 2020 is the flagship wine, with an excellent second wine called Senderos being the only other wine made. UKAN is a complex, full-bodied, elegant and well-structured wine. Somehow it manages to be very drinkable but has a lot of ageing potential. Deep violet-red to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of blackberry, dark chocolate and caramel. It is luscious on the palate, offering polished tannins wrapped around black cherry, mocha, anisette, violet and butterscotch flavors that wind down to a licorice-infused finish. Highly recommended and freshly arrived in the UK.

Outstanding Chianti Classico Riserva from the cooler north west of Chianti. Grown on soils very similar to Felsina's vineyards in Berardenga, this cooler terroir in Argiano helps produce a wine of great energy, elegance and inherent harmony. La Vigna di San Martino ad Argiano is the personal project of Giampaolo Chiettini. Giampaolo spent a good number of years working alongside Paolo di Marchi at Isole e Olena where he fell deeply in love with Sangiovese and honed his skills and became a very highly regarded winemaker of the region. Antinori and Ca' del Bosco have also used Giampaolo's services over the years. He still consults and makes wine for the outstanding Castagnoli and brilliant newcomers Ejamu amongst others. This personal project comes from a beautiful, tiny (1ha!) vineyard in Argiano in the San Casciano Val di Pesa commune. Organic Sangiovese grapes are destemmed and gently crushed then undergo wild fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine is bred in used tonneaux. Giampaolo's trained, light hand in the cellar has helped produce a really rather wonderful Chianti Classico Riserva. This 2022 knocked us out. Immense energy and focus to the wonderful fruit and character. Only 2,000 bottles produced. This wine proves utterly marvellous drinking now, but shall age gracefully and beautifully for many years. We can't wait to follow the evolution! "The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva is an intense, brooding wine. Super-ripe cherry, tobacco, new leather blood orange and cinnamon lend an exotic flair. This complex, dynamic Riserva has a ton to offer, starting with its considerable character. It's one of the most pleasant surprises of my tastings for this report. This is a beautifully mature, traditionally styled Rioja: savoury, earthy and refined rather than fruit-driven, yet with enough freshness and structure to develop for another two decades. Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocte 97/100 "The 2005 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva has a nose of cherries in liqueur and some brick dust, a little à la Rayas, with more Garnacha profile despite having only 10% of Garnacha in the blend (there's 80% Tempranillo, with the balance between Graciano and Mazuelo). This comes from El Bosque, a vineyard on a slope, with less stones on the surface than Tondonia and hence less like Châteauneuf. But the character is there... It's very attractive, Mediterranean, aromatic, showy and expressive. Bosconia tends to develop very nicely in bottle, normally at a slower pace than the Tondonia. It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and 6.6 grams of acidity. Today, I preferred this over the Tondonia. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019 after spending 14 years in the old oak vats and neutral American oak barrels."

It's another powerhouse from this small estate in Barberino. I don't see the Gran Selezione as meaningfully more complex than the Riserva, but it is darker and more powerful in style, with a bit more of a slightly oxidative character as well". This is a terrific find, this is a lovely, juicy smooth red that reminds me of a cross between a Malbec and a Zinfandel. It has an attractive nose of fresh plum and berries along with sweet spice and floral hints, then it leads into a plush palate with summer fruit compote, spice, subtle oak, pepper, minerals and vanilla. Well balanced with soft tannins, good acidity and length, it's one to crack open and enjoy now, ideally with some red meat. And the more you drink it, the more it grows on you. Fantastic value for the quality. Give it a try! Made from the indigenous grape variety Saperavi and partially vinified in traditional qvevri vessels, Bedoba means `Day of Luck’. Winemakers Nugzar Ksovreli and Thierry Fontannaz found inspiration in the history and legacy of the winery’s founders, the Konchosvilli family, whose cellars date back to 1737. A small fraction of the fruit is fermented in whole bunches, and a selection of the grapes are left to dry naturally on the vines until November, ensuring a fine balance between the savoury and spicy elements of the grape. Stainless steel tanks and clay qvevri pots are used for fermentation, encapsulating the combination of innovation and tradition employed by Ksovreli and Fontannaz. Second and third fill American oak barrels as well as 5,000 litre wooden vats are employed for ageing, before a further 12 months in bottle contributes to a seamless texture.

A blend of three parcels from premier cru vineyards this shows more spice and is a little less open, while showing more density and weight. Great concentration and a lovely, juicy, cherry fruited finish. 0-5 years.

The vineyard is planted to approximately 50% Pinot Noir, over different aspects and soil types. This wine comes from vines planted on the south and southeast facing blocks and is a combination of MV6 and 777 clones. This block has a cooler, more protected aspect, enabling extended ripening flavour and tannin. This wine reflects a cooler vintage, with a delicate fruit and an elegant structure. Winemaking: The fruit parcels of fruit were fermented in 2000L vats with a small proportion of whole bunch use, given the cooler year. Maceration for approximately two-three weeks, with gentle pump- overs used twice daily for cap management. The wine was matured in French oak (25% new) for 10 months before blending. 120 dozen produced. 196 bottles for the UK. Château Haut Boutisse, Saint Emilion Grand Cru, is a family property that has existed since the middle of the 19th century. Located on the foothills of Saint Emilion, the soil (Graves, clay-limestone and sandy loam) is similar to the greatest properties in Saint-Emilion.. A beautiful garnet colour. The complex nose presents a beautiful synergy between aromas of jammy strawberry and rose accompanied by fine smoky notes and dried figs. The mouth has a very nice balance between volume and freshness. The harvest is done manually. Vinification is a cold pre-fermentation maceration followed by alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with pumping over/punching down. The wine is aged for 15 months in new barrels (90%) and concrete vats (10%).

The small estate in the heart of Pauillac has produced this rich wine, half-and-half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is full of promising tannins, blackcurrant flavours and spice from wood aging. Drink the wine from 2026.

All in all, a classic Italian company whose roots literally lie deep in the soil of the Tuscan landscape. Sometimes it can be hard to find a word to match what seems so clear to the senses. The nose is dark, as is the colour, beguiling, but restrained. There is a stature to the palate here; a sort of authority to the way it stands back and allows you to explore its detail. A definite sprig of herbs, chocolate notes, but still so transparent that every nuance is revealed. It seems extraordinary that this is just the second time we’ve made MacMuir as a single vineyard release: it’s Felton Road, to be sure, but in a different dimension. Piedmont's 'other' Nebbiolo. Silkier than Barolo and easier to approach when young, Barbaresco delivers a Pinot-like svelte charm, less tarry and tannin than Barolo "like being kicked in the face by a ballerina." Also much less expensive - quite the hidden gem as this is a tiny DOCG, the smallest of the Alba cluster. Our charming Ricossa Barberesco is all wild strawberry and resolved tannin, a joy with rare meat.
