Sarah Ahmed, Decanter – 29th March, 2022 99 points Muscular with great vitality and sensuality, Hill of Grace 2017 combines gravitas with grace. Supple swathes of fruit – blackberry with blueberry and red cherry – come scented with china ink, tinder bush, black pepper, star anise, wattleseed, tea leaf and baking spices. Tobacco pouch, mulch and subtle game undertones strike a savoury note. Rafts of seamless, spicy tannins build and buoy layers of flavour. Terrific authority, strength, complexity and length. Domaine des Trinités
Simon Coulshaw makes natural wines: no cultured yeast, enzymes, chemical tannins or fining product and farming with respect to the environment, although the domaine isn't certified organic. jancisrobinson.com Review: Full bottle 1,126 g. 65% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, organically and biodynamically farmed. Out of the 22 ha that Simon Coulshaw has under vine, 16 are in Faugère and 6 in Pézenas. But, as Coulshaw points out, they are more than 30 km from Pézenas, so while vineyards for the appellation are typically on villafranchian and clay-limestone soils or on black, grey and blue schist, this vineyard is on golden schist. (Coulshaw at this point goes into a charming rhapsody about how beguilingly beautiful schist is...) Le Pech Mege is a single vineyard, the most isolated of all his Pézenas vineyards. Spontaneous fermentation, stainless steel, low sulphite additions, minimal interventions. Coulshaw recommends that this wine is drunk cooler than room temperature. I'd pop it in the fridge for 10–15 minutes to get it down to around 16 °C/61 °F. “It's rare that a Languedoc wine (or any wine, to be frank) can pull off the tightrope balance of pert, outright cheeky freshness and straightforward fruit whilst being pretty dense and concentrated at the same time. This wine defies the laws of gravity. At its heart, there is a deep tobacco-leaf wrapped, chocolate-streaked, umeboshi-plum and soy-umami savouriness, notes of reduced beef stock and game glimmering in the gloaming. But radiating out towards the edges of the wine is this confident, gregarious, sap-filled mulberry fruit and puppy-playful acidity that seems to roll around with gleeful abandon. Supple, lightly astringent but fully ripe tannins. A wine of the vineyard, of the vintage; a wine that shines with a sense of who and what it is”. Cave de Fleurie
Morgon offers a fuller expression of Beaujolais and takes on Pinot Noir-like maturity with a few years bottle age. A palate of juicy red fruit is introduced with floral aromas on the nose of rose and peony with flecks of cracked black peppercorns. The mouthfeel is fleshy with velvety tannins. Try with barbequed sausages or a fruity Moroccan tagine.

Allegrini
Long-standing single-vineyard classic from the outstanding Allegrini family. I've always loved this wine. Somewhat like a 'deployable' version of Amarone, but so much more interesting than most Ripasso. Plays a sexy line between juicy silky, lush and chewy tannin and oak. Intriguing notes of blossom and ripe citrus fruits.

Domaine des Trinités
This Syrah blend with soft black fruits and spice has been shaped by the sunbaked rocky soils of the unmistakable and very definate Faugeres terroir. A herbal, spicy bouquet is followed by youthful red cherries and supple mineral character derived from the schist rich soils. One of our greatest value wines.

Domaine des Escaravailles
Another perennial favourite, this is an old vine Syrah-dominated cuvee that comes from vines around the village of Roaix, which is northeast of Gigondas. Its vibrant ruby color is followed by terrific notes of blueberries, blackberries, pepper and resinous herbs, and it has a kiss of vanilla that will be completely integrated by the time this sees the inside of a bottle. This is a medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure beauty.

San Leonardo
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère, 10% Merlot. This wine is likely to have the broadest drinking window of any modern San Leonardo. Despite the deep purple colour, it is already open and generous on the nose, with vivid ripe morello cherry fruit. The gentle extraction has imbued the wine with a cashmere texture even at this young stage, while the palate is lifted by the leafy, currant-bud notes that are San Leonardo’s signature, reflecting as they do the influence of cool air flowing down from the Dolomites. Balance, charm, and great ageing potential, this San Leonardo has it all. Ideal weather conditions and a strict selection from older vines have yielded a classic San Leonardo of sublime balance. After the numerous challenges affecting the vineyards in 2017, the San Leonardo team hoped for an easier ride the following year. Their prayers were answered at every stage of the growing season, starting with a prolonged cold winter that killed off bugs which would otherwise attack leaves, flowers and grapes later in the year. There was also copious snow, turning to rain throughout spring, which replenished missing ground water. Flowering was perfect, and summer passed with much more sunlight than 2017, but without any extremes of temperature. Then September saw very large thermal differences between day and night – “the secret to incredible perfume” according to owner Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga. The grapes were harvested in the cold of October, further enhancing the aromatic freshness as well as helping fix a beautiful colour. Balance-wise, the result harks back to pre-climate change vintages, with all the flavour benefits of a lengthy growing season but still just 13% alcohol. Despite the propitious weather, the quantity made remains below average, due to recent replantings being excluded from the blend. Harvest began on October 1st and finished on October 18th with the last of the pergola-trained Carmenère.

Chateau Palais Cardinal
10% off all Bordeaux wines
Château Palais Cardinal, a magnificent estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, takes its name from the sublime former residence dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, the remains of which are still visible. The property took the name of Palais Cardinal in the 14th century, when it was enlarged. Owned by the Louis Ballande family since 2018, Château Palais Cardinal is now one of the leading names in the Saint-Émilion appellation. From 2008 to 2018, Château Palais Cardinal has experienced unprecedented growth. From 4 hectares of vines in 2008, Château Palais Cardinal now boasts 22 hectares. Located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Château Palais Cardinal is an exceptional vineyard planted on some of the finest terroirs in the Saint-Émilion appellation. Combining tradition and modernity, Château Palais Cardinal's ambition is to produce great wines that reflect the identity of the Saint-Émilion appellation, thanks to the constant attention paid to the vines, the monitoring of each plot and the appropriate vinification methods. The grape varieties planted in the vineyards reflect those found on the right bank. Merlot (71%) is the predominant grape variety, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (23%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). Aged for a minimum of 12 months, the wines of Château Palais Cardinal offer an intense aromatic expression marked by fine notes of black fruit with hints of incense. Structured by a silky body, the palate evolves with suppleness, held together by a fine acidity.

Danbury Ridge
Displaying an array of ripe red fruit aromas with highlights of cherries, hints of smokiness and spice add complexity to the nose. The palate has a juicy acidity and fine tannins lending to a refreshingly long finish. Super-premium estate sited in the warmest, driest corner of England, near the coast and Malden (of posh salt fame). This south-facing ridge enjoys an exceptionally long warm growing season - so rare in England. Our old friend John Atkinson, Master of Wine, who is an expert on cool-climate viticulture, is enthusiastically involved. Winemaker is Liam Idzikowski who boasts long experience in English wine-making; backed by owners the Bunker family, the winery is an astonishing no-expense-spared jewel in the crown for English wine. The Pinot is deep and svelte in the Pommard/Volnay tradition, rich of fruit and cool of spice - clove, anise etc. Young but self-evidently grand, and deeply impressive.

Poggio al Tesoro
Poggio al Tesoro is a 70 hectare property in Bolgheri, Tuscany and was acquired in 2002 by the Allegrini family, famous for their Amarone produced at their Veneto mothership. The first vineyard they bought, Le Sondraie, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented by them. It is 50 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Vermentino. This wine still seems to be a well-kept secret, and we love to share it with you whilst we can! It is intense ruby red in colour with aromas of fresh crunchy red berries and dark fruit nuances enriched with layers of tobacco and spice. The fruit follows onto the complex palate that combines elegant silky tannins and a lively finish. An excellent Bordeaux blend!

Domaine Alain Gras
Packed full of wild strawberry fruit with hints of raspberry, the palate adds a touch of spice to the sweet fruit and even a touch of coffee. This is a lovely approachable wine. Alain Gras is the reference point for St-Romain. This extremely steep village was considered part of the Hautes Côtes de Beaune until 1947. The vineyards are set back from the main Côte and mostly at higher elevation and have unquestionably improved in quality by the changes in climate and no longer struggle to reach full physiological maturity. The domaine covers 12 hectares with 8ha being planted with Chardonnay and 4ha to Pinot Noir. There are 42 separate parcels but Alain prefers to blend the grapes into one cuvée.
