White Wine

Lovely small-estate, making some very fine Chardonnay from just 5.5 hectares in the Pouilly-Fuissé area. White Burgundies from the 2020 vintage, if you can find them, tend to have lovely balance, with plenty of concentration and acidity. This is delicious already and will improve if given a chance.

Grapes for this Pinot Gris were sourced from selected small plots in the Hunawihr vineyards, which lie at an altitude of 250-300 metres above sea level. On the palate, elegant flavours of pear are supported with a subtle smokiness.

Crisp and zesty with mineral backbone. Great food wine. Matelica is a tiny top rated sub-zone.

This 'baby Meursault' is derived from two small, advantageously positioned parcels of old vines just outside the village of Meursault. The 2022 is an excellent vintage that offers immense concentration and a more forward expression in the glass. It boasts opulent, rich qualities and focused minerality that mirror what we love in the wines of the appellation.The vineyards of 35 to 60-year-old vines lie just outside the AOC border of Meursault, which dramatically lowers the price while allowing for one of the greatest White Burgundy values we have. This wine is ready to drink now and doesn’t need aging. Zesty, bitter citrus, lemon, and grapefruit characters, with a biscuity, yeasty character all held together by a spicy acidity, and a lean mineral salinity. Serious integration, sheer quality.

This premium white blend sees Chardonnay from Whitewolfe Vineyard in Kent lifted with a dash of spicy Pinot Gris from Bromley Brook Vineyard in Essex to create a bright and glowing wine with ripe pear and white peach fruit, honeyed richness and precise acidity. Although the pinot Gris is a minor part of the blend, it still imparts an extra layer of flavour and spice which enhances the Chardonnay. Old oak barrels give the wine some texture. It is a wine that is both easy to enjoy now yet thought-provoking and dreamy, making the name all the more apt. As with all winemaker Chris Wilson's wines, there is a reference to a significant song in his life. Avalon was one of Chris' dads favourite songs and this wine is named to remember him. Avalon is a 1982 single from lounge-rock/synth pop band Roxy Music. It comes from the band’s eighth and final studio album, also named Avalon. The Vale of Avalon in Somerset refers to the mystical region centered around Glastonbury, believed to be the legendary island of Avalon, a place of enchantment and King Arthur's final resting place. The Field of Avalon is one of Glastonbury Festival’s original areas, and offers festival-goers ‘an unbroken connection to the earthy Eden and the lively spirit of Albion fayre’.

Lovely typical citrus, pear and white flower perfumes develop on the nose. The rich aromas continue through the mid-palate. A long lasting wine, with a refreshing finish. Very versatile wine for a range of fish, chicken and salad dishes. The Alsace cooperative, Cave de Hunawihr was founded in 1954 to help re-establish winemaking traditions in a region greatly affected by World War Two. The results have been overwhelmingly positive and Hunawihr now comprises 110 members. The cooperative has a newly renovated, modern winery and comprises 200 hectares of vineyards. 80% of these vines are in Hunawihr, with the remaining 20% in the neighbouring communes, Riquewihr and Zellenberg. They also have 13 hectares in Grand Cru holdings, including Rosacker, Froehn, Sporen, Schoenenbourg and Osterberg.

White Provence wines are a bit of a hidden treasure, little-known outside France but well-loved by wine buffs around the world. This example is typical, and very good value. Nice, mouth filling texture, the style reserved rather like Chablis. Delicate nose with notes of white flowers and citrus. Well balanced in the mouth, it is fresh, with great vivacity and a hint of bitterness with salty aromas. Nice length.

A classic rich traditional style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Blend from Argentina, with raisin and biscuit notes. Where fresh air and crisp spring water reign king, give the wine a refined character hard to recreate in other regions!

Classic southern Rhone white, made from Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier. Fresh and floral with full, round stone fruit flavours and a lithe lick of minerals. Delicious.

Medium-dry style with lots of ripe peach, apple and pear flavours. The luscious palate is weighty but balanced by good freshness. Very rare, very low production. Mineral, taught. Fine and long. One of the unsung whites of the Roussillon. A blend of Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Carignan Gris and Carignan Blanc. Outstanding wine. Ages gracefully for 10++ years. Beautiful vineyards that are beautifully worked.

Virgen de Lorea have been growing the classic Txacoli grapes for over 300 years but have only recently started bottling their own production, and were the first winery to go under the DO Bizkaiko Txacolina in Spain's Basque Country. The results are electric! This delicious, zingy Txacoli has a months lees ageing to give a tiny bit of added texture to the ripe citrus and green apple fruit. Zingy, refreshing and very easy to drink.

Bright gold in the glass with Creamy citron tart, honeysuckle and lemon curd on the nose with a hint of cardamom spice. Delicious flavours of creamy but crisp lemon tart especially mid-palate. An elegant well-balanced wine with a lingering tail of citrus zest

A very special wine from ancient plants of two of the rarest and very best vines for Soualnes terroir, Grenache Gris and Carignan Gris. This really does have everything. It's floral, honeyed orchard and citrus fruits added to its sumptuousness, its layers of texture and bright but not too spiky acidity. Very long with great balance and so much interest. Divine stuff that is here in tiny quantities.

Refined and mellow mouth, full of honey and candied mirabelle aromas. Nice acidity, rich and complex, it has a characteristic hint of minerality.

Something of Pouilly-Fuissé in the style here, a rich oak-infused nose, but on the palate linear, mineral and refined. Elegant, broad and complex, so unlike other English chardonay. Super-premium estate sited in the warmest, driest corner of England, near the coast and Malden (of posh salt fame). This south-facing ridge enjoys an exceptionally long warm growing season - so rare in England. Our old friend John Atkinson, Master of Wine, who is an expert on cool-climate viticulture, is enthusiastically involved. Winemaker is Liam Idzikowski who boasts long experience in English wine-making; backed by owners the Bunker family, the winery is an astonishing no-expense-spared jewel in the crown for English wine.

An exciting new wine from Vincent Carreras - 80% Xare.lo and 20% Macabeu aged in foudre. Sparkly bright but gently rich and layered. Divine.

Enrico Rivetto is one of the pioneers of the Nascetta grape in these times, and a seeker of truth for the varietal expression in his clay-limestone soils on Sinio at 400 metres altitude with northern exposure. The soils have a sub-alkaline reaction, low in nitrogen. Nascetta is a semi-aromatic grape native to Lange with excellent aging potential. Historical texts liken this varietal to the great wines of Rhein. Manually harvested, sometimes at different stages depending on the vintage conditions. Nascetta sees wild, spontaneous fermentation. 80% of the wine is macerated on skins for three days then sees spontaneous fermentation and then breeds in concrete tank. The other 20% is vinified in Amphora with post ferment maceration lasting for several months. These two portions are then blended just before bottling. The 2022 shows gorgeous yellow plum, honeysuckle and herbs on the nose. The wine is citrus-juicy, yet with good minerality and a lean and waxy structure that shows good tension. Quite wonderful and delightfully curious. Notes on the 2021: "Macerated on the skins for 72 hours, this golden Nascetta lifts from the glass with aromas of baked apples, roast lemon and dried yellow flowers. The sublime texture is highlighted by dried orange, dried wild herbs and crunchy acidity" Jeff Porter in Wine Enthusiast 92/100 "Deep, almost golden yellow. Enticing, distinctive nose of dried quince, orange blossom, lemon and the merest suggestion of curry powder, pressed orange and bruised apple. Very subtle and long and unfolding only slowly on the finish with the perfect dose of ripe acidity. Super-fine but noticeable texture. Dvine pet nat from Gramiller. So fine, fruity, fresh and elegant. 100% Grenache Noir with no skint contact give aromas of white peaches, wild strawberries and red currants. The palate unfolds with these flavours whilst being juicy but oh-so fresh An outstanding effort.

This is a ‘hands on’ Domaine that firmly believes good wine is made in the vineyard. Serge’s daughter, Valèrie, looks after their 15 hectares of vineyards and makes the wine with a view to preserving as much terroir in the wines as possible. Their vines are planted on a unique concoction of clay/limestone ‘Terres Blanches’ over kimmeridgean clay and crushed oyster shells. Moreover the vineyard slopes are all fully exposed to every second of sun each day has to offer being south and south-west facing. Such exceptional terroir as this resounds throughout the wines which practically sing with flavours of gunflint, flowers and cut grass.

A wild ferment, aged in old French oak.

Pale, deft and zesty and enticing. A perfect example of mid-Mosel dry Riesling - delicate white peach fruit, cool slate minerality.

Honey, lemon, quince, mineral, faultless. 'Consistently producing pristine wines' Wine Enthusiast. I think them the best winery in Austria. Since 1171, getting the hang of it now.
