Gasper Wines
This lovely wine is golden in colour with youthful hues. Intense aromas of tropical fruit and grapefruit give way to floral notes of acacia. The palate is fruity and pleasantly soft, with distinct almond flavours that continue on the finish. This unique variety is known for being taut and zesty, but also slightly honeyed in character. Gašper is located in Goriška Brda, which makes up the two thirds of Collio stretching into Slovenia from Friuli-Venezia Giulia in north-eastern Italy. Goriška Brda has a climate ideally suited to viticulture, with its proximity to both the Adriatic Sea and the Alps providing dry, warm summers with cooling breezes during the crucial ripening period. The Gašper wine estate is a joint venture between a local cooperative and the ?arman family, who have been in the wine and hospitality business for over 50 years. At the helm of the cellar is Darinko Ribolica, a respected oenologist from Goriška Brda. He uses Slovenia’s local varieties, deeply rooted in Germanic, Slavic and Roman cultural influences, to create wines in a modern, fresh style.

Aloe Tree
Aromatic guava and orange blossom jump from the glass - this Chenin Blanc is dry with ripe apples, peaches and a hint of orange peel on the palate. The elegant crisp finish makes this a fantastic wine for all occasions. The fruit for Aloe Tree hails from the increasingly fashionable west coast of the Cape. Cool nights and sea breezes combine to extend the growing season, resulting in perfectly balanced, ripe grapes. The iconic Aloe Tree image is sure to be familiar to anyone who has travelled widely through the Cape and is an important part of the biodiversity which South Africa is famous for. The characteristic silhouette provides a backdrop to one of the most spectacular wine regions in the world where wines grow in harmony with the thousands of plant species that make up the Cape Floral Kingdom. Chenin blanc is well adapted for various soil types, but our premium grapes are grown on medium to lower potential soils. Yield levels are limited by winter pruning and by removing shoots and leaving two or three shoots per spur during early spring. Canopy management is required as it plays a major role in yield and quality to ensure an optimum microclimate within the canopy. With its vigorous growth, medium-sized trellises are required and shoot positioning are done to maximize canopy surface. Grapes are harvested at a minimum of 21.5°Brix, but we aim for 22°Brix. Once the Chenin Blanc grapes are harvested, they arrive at the winery where the fruit is gently pressed and only the free run juice is used. Using selected yeasts the juice then undergoes cold fermentation at 14 degrees Celsius for 2 weeks before lying on the lees for 3 months.

Kanakaris
This mountainous Malagousia has lifted aromas of Greek herbs, lemon and exotic fruits. The palate is richly textured and aromatic with notes of peach, tropical fruits and white flowers. The finish is lifted by bright acidity and a subtle, saline freshness. Aigialeia, in the northwestern Peloponnese, is among Greece’s most distinctive wine-growing regions. Set against the rugged terrain of the Panachaiko mountains, the area’s high elevations, northern exposure, steep, sloping vineyards and proximity to the Corinthian Gulf help moderate high temperatures, creating a growing environment unlike anything else in the Peloponnese. It is here that Michalis Kanakaris founded his eponymous winery in 1979, focusing on indigenous varieties Roditis, Sideritis and Mavro Kalavrytino grown on Aigialeia’s sandy, red/white clay soils. Today, Kanakaris is run by the third generation of Michalis’ family, with brothers Stefanos and Michalis taking over the reins in 2009. Capturing a sense of place is at the core of Kanakaris’ winemaking ethos. Stefanos and Michalis work closely with like-minded growers, farming 55 hectares of vines planted between 450 and 1150 metres above sea level. These vineyards, dotted with olive groves and citrus trees, are situated on either side of the valleys and gorges of the five rivers of the Peloponnese, which flow down from the mountains to the Corinthian Gulf. While maintaining their grandfather's original focus on Roditis, Sideritis and Mavro Kalavrytino, the brothers have also added Malagouzia, Moschofilero and Agiorgitiko to their remit, alongside the international varieties Merlot and Syrah. All Kanakaris’ fruit is hand-harvested and vinified in their recently renovated modern winery, equipped with a range of stainless-steel tanks to capture the aromatics of Greece’s indigenous varieties and Aigialeia’s vineyards.

Chateau Rieussec
Rieussec is one of the biggest estates of Sauternes with 227 acres of vines above the Garonne River in Bordeaux. This a wonderful blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The estate began in the 18th century followed by several owners. It is now owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) as of 1984. Citrus lemon, then honey, peach and apricot, with hints of mineral salinity. Aged in older oak which adds some texture but not flavour. Impressive and a very good vitnage for dry white Bordeaux.

Tete-a-Tete
An absolute bobby dazzler at this price. Weighty, zingy, long and delicious. Terret, one of the Languedoc’s oldest and unique varieties, has long been prized for its ability to hold onto its acidity in the heat of a Mediterranean summer. It’s lively with citrus flavours with a rounded mid-palate, tight with a mineral finish. Outstanding value.

Domaine Olivier Leflaive
Intense dried fruit aromas combine with forestal notes of anise and chlorophyll. Firm mouthfeel with a touch of tannin that gives body and texture. Enclosed by drystone walls on three sides and backing steeply onto the Montagne de Beaune, Clos des Monsnières offers a beautiful panorama of Pommard and the Côte. Quite shallow clay-limestone soils over ironstone gravel enable Chardonnay to ripen slowly.

Domaine Romarion
Beautifully clear with green reflections. Intense nose of apricot, vine peach and rose. Very aromatic and floral. Powerful and generous on the palate with a remarkable finish, persistent, fresh and fruity. The soil, composed of chalky ‘terres blanches’, is ideal for the Viognier grape. Control of yields via optimal management of nutrition and de-budding. It spends 4 months in stainless steel vats. Batonnage on the lees to accentuate the plumpness on the palate.

Domaine du Pélican
Not to detract from their authentic Jura heart, the two Pelican whites - Chardonnay and Savagnin - offer an instantly lovable journey into Jura style for those wary of oxidative surprises as both are made 'topped-up' rather than in oxidative style and with a clear salute to the heritage of their grand Burgundian owner. On the nose a Meursault-esque reductive whiff, ozone and saline, tempered tempting posh new oak; even before a sip these are out and proud posh wines. The Savagnin is wild, vegetal in a fine garden/herb garden sense, salty and zesty and oddly sweet mango and hot straw, almost Savennieres-like with its broad back, whack of acid and suave new-oak integration. Chardonnay smells like top end Bien Nacido but unfurls into Jura idiom with fine acidity, limpid lift, seashells and citrus. Both, quite frankly, nicely-priced for such a grand, fascinating and extraordinary wines. I'd 100% recommend both - try them together! jancisrobinson.com 17.5/20

Domaine Gayda
A limited edition wine from Gayda that changes with every vintage. And the 2023 is an exciting new take indeed! Beautiful Rolle (Vermentino) and Viognier from the Minervois are picked when perfectly ripe then pressed slowly in whole bunches, with very gentle racking and seeing careful vinificaton without sulphur, at low temperature - ageing on lees - the Rolle in stainless steel vats, and the Viognier in a mixture of concrete eggs and stainless steel tanks. This is SPARKLY BRIGHT and DAZZLING with good richness also. The pale yellow colour is elegant and brilliant. On the nose, a discreet subtlety reveals notes of Granny Smith apple, lime and fresh almonds, characteristic of the blend of Rolle and Viognier grapes. On the palate, the wine is full and generous, supported by a lovely acidity and a slight, attractive bitterness on the finish. A mineral touch adds fascinating depth also. The flavours of fresh pear, acacia flower, almond and white peach unfold harmoniously, offering you a refined, beautifully balanced treat of a wine. Unique and utterly, utterly marvellous. A LOT of wine for the money.

Selbach-Oster
The Selbachs have been cultivating Riesling vines in the Mosel since 1661. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara run the estate, now one of the leading producers in the Mittelmosel. There are 10.6 hectares of vineyards including holdings in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, and Graacher Domprobst. The grapes are handpicked and then fermented in traditional large oak barrels. The emphasis here is on finesse and purity of fruit, producing supremely elegant Kabinett and Spätlese wines as well as powerful, concentrated Auslese wines.

Château de Saint Cosme
Plenty of famous Gigondas or Chatauneuf estates have a "baby white wine" pad out orders of hefty reds. But this is a different beast entirely; a fine wine in its own right. A single vineyard near Violès on the Ouvèze river plain below Gigondas, the Barruol family planted this to white grapes because of the unusual, intensely limestone soils. Viognier, Picpoul and Marsanne. Part barrel-fermented, lees ageing. Clear, rich, mineral and charming. White wine is now allowable in Gigondas but not all soils are amenable, and most are Clairette-based - I'd wager good money that Deux Albion would beat most if not all in a blind tasting. It certainly matches up to more established Vacquyras Blanc which are hitting their stride nicely now. St Cosme is one of the top three Gigndas estates. The Barruol family have been in Gigondas since 1490. The house, where it foundations at least, were the original Roman villa of Gigondas. Visiting and tasting at such an iconic winery holds the inevitable risk of over-rating the wines, in a star-struck glow. Beautiful estate, pristine vineyards, epic reviews, lovely people, 2000 year-old Roman winemaking room in the basement - frankly, impressive. I tasted pragmatically with a thoroughly businesslike approach and to be fair, I'd be happy to stock every single wine they showed me, and I know our customers would love them too. It's pretty rare to score full marks across the whole range!

Idun
The Cabriole Sauvignon Blanc from the Idun winery is an elegant yet expressive Sauvignon from the cool Bot River region of South Africa. Subtle tropical fruit is beautifully balanced with saline touches and minerality on both the nose and palate, which builds to show an impressive richness whilst never losing freshness and expertly poised acidity. This terroir driven wine nods more to the classic old world Sauvignon Blanc from Europe than it does the modern Kiwi style, but there is enough character to satisfy lovers of both styles – very impressive. Idun is a small, boutique winery run by a French-Danish family originating from Mauritius. They produce excellent varietals which are well-balanced, concentrated, and elegant. They produce mightily impressive, French-inspired wines which you would no doubt pay a lot more for if the grapes were from France.

Sauvion
100% Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, one of the most famous regions for that grape variety in the world. A super smooth, well rounded example with mainly ripe apple flavours upfront, juicy acidity and there’s also a little floral feel to it too - unmistakably an off-dry wine with the ripe fruit pushing forward. A very easy sipper, thoroughly enjoyable.
