Water-white. Very introvert nose. Still extremely youthful but with hints of a complex cocktail of passion fruit and minerals to come. Grainy texture on the finish. This is a baby! Super-clean finish. 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW

Weingut Schatzel
Bright, intense and dry Riesling with rich peach, ripe citrus fruit with a mouth-watering acidity and a persistent lengthy finish. Delicious, organic wine from a great family producer. The Schätzel family has been producing wine since 1350, making them the oldest winemaking family in the Rheinhessen. The red slate of the vineyards around Nierstein, where the estate is based, spans six hectares, of which the majority is Riesling. In 2008, when Kai Schätzel took over his family’s estate, he transformed it to organic and biodynamic farming and reintroduced traditional winemaking methods. He has developed a reputation for his unique style which involves less alcohol, less exuberant fruit, more minerality and a more cutting and distinctive flavour profile.

Light, very fresh, clean nose. Green apples and light spritz. Lots of very clean acidity. Seems lighter than 10%. Stony finish with medium persistence. Strongly stony character. Already a joy to taste. 17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a sensitive, sublime, complex, exquisite and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and delicate expression of stewed apricots and some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet refined and savoury palate, with coolish apricot flavours on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr. This is a great pleasure to drink, but you can easily keep this Kabinett for over three decades. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Drink 2022-2070 Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate (July 2022)

Weingut Max Ferd.Richter
For our selection of dry/trocken Rieslings from Single Vineyards we source all single vineyard wines from "Premier Cru" and "Grand Cru" vineyards from old vines. Fermentation is exclusively done in traditonal Fuders (old oak-barrels) where wines are maintained on the lees until bottling. These wines perfectly show the terroir of the given vineyard site. The range starts with the classical Kabinetts, the archetypical wine of the Mosel-Region, showing lightness and freshness with an almost airy elegance. They are generally lower in alcohol and have higher acid levels. The next step up are the "Alte Reben" selections (Old Vines, Vieilles Vignes). These are harvested from the oldest vines of our Crus with at least 75 years of age. They are powerful with richer body and well balanced minerality. On the top of the pyramid you find the GGs (Großes Gewächs/Grand Cru/Grand Vin). These Rieslings are grown in the best and oldest parts of our Grand Cru vineyards. These wines are the perfect combination of deepth, concentration, minerality and utmost precison and elegance. The result is simply mesmerizing. The wine does have a slight bite but above all, it is beautifully airy, packed with intense and remarkably fresh flavors (not an easy task in a vintage with record heat in the summer). This is one of those dry Riesling which home in on the fact that Mosel now produces some of the finest dry Riesling in the whole of Germany. As usual, great wines is rarely produced in gigantic quantities and this is no different with this GG. But, believe us, every effort should be made to lay one’s hands on a few bottles of this divine juice

This monopole is a southwest-facing vineyard slope of just two acres. The vineyard was planted in 1964, but the first historic record dates back to 30th April 1245! The vineyard was dedicated by the Count of Veldenz to the nearby convent from which it took its name “Helenenkloster” (St. Helene’s convent.) It offers a rather aromatic nose made of vineyard peach, apricot blossom and fine spicy elements. The wine is subtly creamy yet also beautifully light-footed on the palate and leaves a direct feel of herbs, fruits and spices in the animating and persistent finish. Flavours of apricot add a touch of weight to the aftertaste.

“The winemakers at Richter believe that great wine comes from the vineyard, not the cellar. With this in mind they strive for precision in their daily viticultural work. The challenge of cultivating vines on the steep, slate slopes of Mosel is overcome by fastidious handwork, small crop sizes, all-natural fertilizers and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, all harvesting is done by hand. Vinification starts with gentle pressing and slow temperature controlled fermentation in traditional old oak barrels (fuders). This careful, deliberate process preserves the vineyard-grown quality of the grapes, develops the unique character of the single-vineyard cuvees, and to gives Richter wines exceptional longevity.” “Racy Kabinett driven by mature tartaric acid. Very typical aromatic structure of red berries, as well as nuances of grapefruit and slate stone.” – Winery Max Ferd. Richter

Weissburgunder is the German name for the Pinot Blanc grape variety and is enjoying a rennaissance. Not much planted in the Mosel valley so this one from Richter is a rarity. Fine notes of pear, gooseberry, some hay and classic slate minerals. Slim and elegant!

Fresh, delicately fragrant nose with nuances of apple blossom; a juicy wine with a clear mineral texture. Excellent balance between aromatic fruit sweetness and racy fruit sweetness. The Mülheimer Sonnenlay is located on the former Rundeberg of the Mosel, south of Mülheim. The name Sonnenlay is a combination of Sonne and Lay, the Mosel-Franconian word for slate. This would already narrow down the main characteristics of this vineyard; Located in a western orientation, the vineyards, some of which are extremely steep, have a skeletal slate soil that is enriched with sand, stones and clay due to the former course of the Moselle river. This soil combines typical slate minerality with elegant fruit.
