The palate is soft and fresh, offering zippy acidity and a complex array of primary fruit flavours, including peach, pear and apricot. This is enjoyable on its own as an aperitif but also pairs wonderfully with oriental cuisine. All vineyards are situated on gentle hillside slopes in the Treviso province, at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level. The grapes are carefully handpicked in mid-late September when they have reached full maturity, but still retain a high acidity level, giving the freshness and fruitiness typical of Prosecco.

What a beauty. An insanely ancient grape variety and wine region - they were making this long before the Romans arrived in the south of Italy. The winemaking, though, is super-modern, the result silky and astonishingly rich. We know that Parker and his team like a big glossy wine and I proudly quote them: "This is a big wine with a capital B" Parker 90/100 of the 2015 vintage (and frankly down in the baked south there's barely any vintage variation) "You gotta love the little spider depicted on the front label of this wine. It refers to the mystical cult of Tarantism practiced in this part of Southern Italy in which a tarantula bite is believed to send women (mostly) into an all-night frenzy. Tarantism is revived and widely popular today as a rave-like dance craze. The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Piano del Cerro is packaged in a very heavy glass bottle. It pours out slowly to reveal dried blackberry, spice, Spanish cedar and campfire ash. This Aglianico is virtually impenetrable in appearance. The oak-driven tannins are sweet and spicy. This is a big wine with a capital B." Of the 2016 "a smoky and tarry wine showing thick concentration. It has a chewy and rich texture and lots of barbecue spice on the close. From presentation to finish, this has all the trappings of a big boy wine for those who enjoy this sort of heft and meatiness."

The 13th Century Ormanni estate is located in the heart of Chianti, between the towns of Poggibonsi and Castellina in Chianti. For the last 200 years the estate has been owned by the Brini Batacchi family, and it is Paolo Brini Batacchi and his daughter, Paola, who run the winery today. Certified Organic. Demonstrating Bolgheri’s ability to produce an original & easily recognizable Bordeaux blend, grapes for Le Sondraia come from the first vineyard Allegrini bought in Bolgheri which is just next door to the world famous Ornellaia. Sondraia has quickly become a classic in the Bolgheri area. Perfectly ripe grapes & painstaking work in the cellar yield a wine with intense fresh dark fruit notes complemented by smoky tobacco, herbs & sweet spices. These characteristics follow on to the palate which is silky smooth & profoundly elegant. After 18 months in barrique & a further nine months in bottle, the wine was released.

Amarone is made by allowing the grapes to partially dry and shrivel for up to 120 days, usually on straw mats. (This process is called appassimento or rasinate (to dry and shrivel) in Italian). This concentrates the remaining sugars and flavours, giving a rich and deep wine, with intense red fruits and a juicy palate. Some oak ageing increases structure and imparts subtle warmth and body.

The Sicilian Il Folle Grillo ticks all the boxes. Production at Il Folle is with the utmost care, these are organically made wines showing typicity of the local varieties. The grape, ‘Grillo,’ is an indigenous Sicilian variety (famous for making the fortified wine Marsala) and produces wines that are fresh, bright and easy drinking. Il Folle Grillo has surprising complexity and lovely intensity for this level, with hints of spice and lively verve alongside its mineral driven personality. Certified Organic

A delicious Puglian Primitivo, bursting with aromas of ripe berries and spice. This wine is ruby red in colour with a violet hue. It has intense aromas of red cherries, blackberries and hints of spice and leather. These aromas follow through on to the palate which is rich and velvety with generous tannins and great length.

The young, dynamic duo of Giulia and Valentina Malesani (hence the name `Giuva`) are situated north of Verona in the Val Squaranto. Planted at about 300m, the vines surprisingly face north and west, giving the wines incredible freshness and crunchy red fruits. This has flamboyant jammy notes on the nose, then great structure on the palate with expressive, juicy berries and ripe cherries. It`s meaty and earthy, with spicy and jammy undertones. 95 points

Very impressive complexity and length for the price. You’d have to pay near £50 to achieve the same sort of complexity in Bdx. Starts off with red plum, black cherry and loads of scorched earth, cigar box, cinnamon, smoke, licorice and thyme. The acidity is as expected, pretty high given the majority grape being Sangiovese and the tannins are somewhat dusty/ gritty. It needs food but 2 hours later and blueberry, leather and a much more seamless palate appears with a eucalyptus freshness to it.

The Ripasso method beefs up the sometimes weedy Valpolicella by the addtion of Amarone lees which starts a second fermentation and adds body. With complex red fruit aromas, this well balanced full-bodied wine is velvety smooth with harmonious tannins

Le Volte dell’Ornellaia combines a Mediterranean expression of generosity with structure and complexity, reflecting the philosophy of Ornellaia. Fiasco Vino Toscano is an affectionate, amusing nod in the direction of those straw-covered flasks which became such popular table lamps in the 1970s! The wine is a blend of organic Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia Nera and Colorino from Tuscany; Montepulciano from Le Marche and Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d’Avola from Sicily. A real mish-mash but it’s really gluggable, organic and great value! Minimal SO2, bags of energy, easy to like!

This is an elegant and rich Chianti Classico, made from Sangiovese (95%) and Canaiolo Nero (5%) grapes, originating from south facing vineyards which are over 40 years in age, and a soil rich in friable shale and limestone. The result is a fruity, aromatic Sangiovese based wine with soft, fine tannins and a long finish. Clean, intense, ripe black cherry, blueberry, rose and vanilla. This medium to full-bodied wine is an exceptionally well balanced wine and is ready upon release, but will reward significantly with further ageing.
