The team reconvened on May 3rd for the second and final assemblage of 2023 Monte Bello. The panel of eight determined that, of the three further lots being presented, just one had the qualities consistent with Monte Bello. The addition of this lot will result in a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The typically intense dark purple colour of a young Monte Bello belies the vivid aromatics: the nose opens with a wonderful floral aroma over the precise berry fruit. There is copious structure, but it is very fine-grained even at this early stage. Splendid balance and harmony already, with an ultra-long finish indicating the great potential of this wine.

Adi Badenhorst
Fairly simple cherry and redcurrant aromas lead to blackcurrants and plums in the mouth, with refreshing acidity and a line of bitterness on the back palate. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, which perhaps adds that greeness underneath the ripe fruit. A more structured, tannic wine than initially expected, but with lovely fruit - delicious wine.

Chateau Beau Site
74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Low yields of 17 hl/ha following the hail storm in June and the deep gravels the Cabernet is planted on. 14.0% ABV. 40% new oak. What is made is very good, clean and long with precise extraction and ripe but not overripe fruit. It derives from a gravel "croupe" near Calon-Ségur. "Beau-Site" means beautiful site and lies just behind Grand Cru Château Calon-Segur on one of Medoc's highest points with fantastic views over the river Gironde. It was originally classified as a Cru Bourgeois Superieur in 1932 but in 1966 Beau Site was reclassified as a Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnel. The Castéja family, who also own Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille, bought the château in 1955. The château has nearly 100 hectares of vines with an average age of 35 years. Beau-Site's 18th century underground cellar is one of the oldest in the Médoc and presents the perfect maturing conditions for a wine that is vinified with the same care and technique as a Grand Cru Classé. Beau-Site's wine is full of power and temperament, a typical Saint-Estèphe with tannins allowing for keeping this wine for some years.

Chateau Haut-Batailley
The new second wine of Ch Haut-Batailley, a Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. The nose is aromatic and offers intensity, a fine grain as well as a small sensation of tension. It reveals notes of wild cassis, fresh blackberryand small notes of fresh raspberry associated with touches of spices, bergamot, fresh vanilla, a subtle hint of pepper, fresh nutmeg and a very discreet hint of hazelnut. The palate is fruity, slightly tight, mineral and offers a fine acidulous frame, tension, a beautiful pulpy/ripe fruit and a fine fat. On the palate this wine expresses notes of bright cherry, pulpy/juicy raspberry and small notes strawberry associated with small touches of juicy blackberry as well as hints of tonka bean, toasted and a subtle hint of almond. Good length. A very fine hint of chocolate on the persistence.

One of the most legendary Stellenbosch wines. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels, rather like a fine classed growth Claret. Complex, layered and intense aromas of cassis, plums, spiced oak and cigar boxon the nose. The palate is rich and supple, with seamless fruit / oak integration, delicate tannins and a fine seam of acidity. Layers and layers of plush fruit explodes in the mouth with concentrated flavours of tomato cocktail, black and red fruits, and stewed meat. A wine of immense purity, depth and freshness. A subtle note of mint on the finish completes a wine filled with detail.

Chateau Cissac
CWM Ranking: High 2:1 Big and bold, this is concentrated and powerful with opulence and plushness. Tannis are ripe and chewy and moutfilling, the wood and the alcohol just present, full of sunkissed blackcurrants and black cherries, a little bit stewed in their ripeness but this also has a lovely fresh mint and liquorice tang to it and lifted finish which counteracts the fruit. Nicely complete and I love the density and the texture, the tannins have a lovely feel to them, it's mouth coating and so full. Would pair well with a nice steak. Classy and confident. From a single tract of vineyards extending 100ha and adjoining St-Estèphe and Pauillac on soils that are mainly sandy gravel on top of clay and limestone. Blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, aged 16 months in 25% new oak barrels.

Meerlust
The 2021 Meerlust Estate Rubicon is the flagship wine from Meerlust Estate, one of South Africa’s most prestigious wineries located in the renowned Stellenbosch region. This Bordeaux-style red blend exemplifies the estate’s dedication to producing world-class wines. The 2021 vintage, which has been recognised as being one of the estate's best vintages, is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Each varietal was fermented separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in 300-liter barrels and large foudres. After eight months, the components were blended and aged for an additional ten months in barrels to achieve harmony before bottling. The 2021 Rubicon displays a deep, youthful color with an intense, almost purple hue. The nose is quintessential Rubicon, offering aromas of violets, ripe plum, cedarwood, fennel, and intense spiciness, with typical liquorice notes also evident. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, packed with fresh dark fruit and rounded tannins seamlessly integrated with oak.

Basket Range
From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: This wine is the evolution of the style my father made using the same fruit; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. These vines were planted first in the early 1980s and at our new adjacent vineyard in 2001. Growing these varieties and making them into wine, I see the quality of the site and concentration of the fruit. Each block sits at a northern facing aspect on loamy clay over sandstone. The wine shows ripeness of tannin, structure and balance, while having energy and elegance. A reflection of an excellent site for these varieties. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon predominant blend (75%) with Merlot (19%) and Petit Verdot (6%). Each component was fermented in 2000L vats and matured in French barriques for 10 months. The 2022 Estate Cabernet is a pretty special wine for me. The 2021 Estate Cabernet was awarded the "Best Cabernet Trophy" at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show in 2022. I feel the 2022 vintage release is the best job of it I have made so far. Only 230 dozen produced. From Mike Bennie in The Wine Front: "From the Basket Range, of course, and a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 6% petit verdot. Sholto Broderick guides the process here, a young fella with a lot of clever stuff going on in his head, and a steady hand on the idea of legacy for the family estate. This feels like a very mature human made it. So even, so precise, so balanced, so serious yet so drinkable. Succulent texture, a freshness in the mix, dark cherry, faint mocha, liquorice, clove, blonde tobacco, alpine amaro characters in bouquet and palate. A web of emery board tannin shapes things nicely, the persistence is notable with graphite and crushed rock minerality finishing things in the distance, with a lick of clove spice there too. His final vintage here delivers a high quality, enjoyable wine that has sweet, dark fruit and plenty of attractive aromatics upfront. Duckhorn Vineyards
Lush, energetic and intense, this gorgeous Cabernet begins with aromas of blackberry, huckleberry and chocolate, as well as hints of mint, cardamom, clove and graham cracker. On the palate it displays lovely brightness, with firm, resolved tannins framing flavors of boysenberry and black currant. As it evolves in the glass, subtle sweet and savory notes are revealed, carrying the wine to a long, focused finish. Duckhorn have been producing Cabernet Sauvignon since 1978. Blending fruit from estate vineyards and top Napa Valley growers, this wine embodies the complexity of the valley, while offering a seamless balance between fruit, oak and tannins. To add nuance, the Cabernet is blended with Merlot, yielding a wine that is approachable in its youth, yet worthy of cellaring.

Chateau Haut Nouchet
Pessac-Leognan, just south of the city of Bordeaux, features gravel-rich soils that produce wines with excellent clarity and definition. Odyssée is a cuvée by Château Haut Nouchet, and its vines are some of the highest elevation in the appellation. The blend is about 60/40 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, with a splash of Petit Verdot. We found this wine impressive in its combination of intensity and restraint. The nose is dark and polished with plum and wild cherries, and notes of liquorice and spice. The mouth is inky and dark but the fruit is laid over a beautifully clean structure of fine gravely tannin. This is a classy, sleek Bordeaux with a beautifully balanced mouthfeel, that tastes a lot more expensive than it is.
