Brilliant ruby robe, raspberry. A striking nose, with an aroma of red fruit, blackcurrant. Fresh on the palate, with peppery notes. The Maranges appellation is the youngest of the Côte de Beaune family, making its debut in May 1989. It spans three villages, namely Dezize-lès-Maranges, Cheilly-les-Maranges and Sampigny-les-Maranges. Several hills and slopes make up this appellation, all south/south-east-facing, at an altitude of between 200 and 400 metres. The Maranges 1ers Crus are spread over seven distinct climats.

Viticulture A single vineyard Pinot Noir from one of the most coastal vineyards in Chile in San Antonioi just 5 km from the ocean, within a small vineyard region 55 miles west of central Santiago and just south of Casablanca Valley. Morning mists and spring frosts, often associated with the Napa Valley and Bordeaux are brought from the west coast by the Humboldt current. Winemaking Grapes are carefully selected and picked manually early in the morning . Cold maceration prior to alcoholic fermentation at 10C during 3- 4 days in order increase skin components extraction. Alcoholic fermentation was carried out at low controlled temperature ( Maximum 25C), which avoids the loss of volatile compounds (aromatic compounds). Regular pumping over to facilitate colour extraction and skin components. Aging in tank with oak to add complexity and oaky character to final wines. Final wines have a deep red- purple colour with delicate sweet red fruit flavours and aromas. Oak Treatment Time: 6 Months Type: French Oak % wine oaked: 100 % new oak: None

Vincent Girardin
Les Gravières premier cru is on Santenay's border with Chassagne-Montrachet. It gets a bit more sun than most of the commune, and is one of the best Santenay vineyards, for both reds and whites. While the excellent Vincent Girardin is better known for whites, this Pinot is nonetheless reliable, and good value for Burgundy in this particularly good vintage. Plenty of red berry fruit, with earth and subtle spice. It is tangy and vibrant, still youthful. Soft and with lots of savoury interest.

From Austria’s Burgenland to Biljana in Slovenia, the Jermann family’s journey would see Anton Jermann lead them over the border to Farra d’Isonzo, in Italy’s pretty, hilly, nearby Friuli in 1881. Today, this is where the winery still resides. Leaning on Anton’s legacy, Silvio Jermann, Anton Jermann’s great grandson, has since turned the Jermann name into a reference point, not only for the region, but for Italy as a whole.

Pronounced lifted floral perfume on the nose with a brooding and seductive dark berry fruit, musk, wild mushrooms and hints of iron, savoury richness and spice and an intense vibrant minerality. The sake yeast no7 is also at the basis of this creation. In contrast to the Sauvignon blanc, the sake culture is less easy to discover here…,. This is because the tannic structure of red wine predominates over the aromatic characteristics of this yeast culture. Some bottle aging will change this. But will this wine have a chance? The quality is already excellent. Lots of cherry and small red fruit in the smell and taste, with a refined and elegant aftertaste. No burgundy style, but classic and at a lonely height!

Domaine Billard Pere et Fils
Jérôme and Elisabeth Billard are the 4th generation of his family to have managed Domaine Billard Pere & Fils. Their winery is located in La Rochepot, a village just west of Saint-Aubin. Jérôme has built up the estate's vineyard holdings to an impressive 18.5 hectares, with the largest area in Hautes Cotes de Beaune, as well as Beaune, St Romain, St Aubin, Auxey Duresses and Pommard. Jérôme’s philosophy is "expressing the typicity of the terroir.". Yields are low and grapes are concentrated because of organic farming techniques, extensive pruning and cover crops between vines. His trusty Percheron steed, Raphael, ploughs the vineyards at the estate and for Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted on a vibrating table to ensure only the best are selected. Winemaking is low intervention. Pinot Noir is foot trodden to gently extract tannins, only natural yeasts are used and wines are left on lees in oak barrels before bottling at the estate. As a consequence of these meticulous efforts, Billard offers high quality wines with layers of complexity and concentration at surprisingly low prices. Their Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge comes from a plot of 4 hectares with alluvial clay soil. After pressing the grapes by foot, the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Delicious! Complex but easy to drink (light bodied, not too bold, low tannins). Juicy plum flavours are bright but not too sweet, smoky tobacco adds warmth and balance.

Domaine Claude Marechale
To quote Allen Meadows; ‘the quality of these wines is nothing short of phenomenal compared to the usual quality of the respective appellations’. Claude Marechal makes his wines as naturally as possible, taking his inspiration from his late friend Henri Jayer who he trained with early in his career. In common with Jayer he makes wines above and beyond the expectations of his terroirs. His wines are pure and sleek with vibrant fruit and great potential to age. In the vineyard ripeness is the watchword and the vines are maintained in order to maximise phenolic maturity every vintage whatever the conditions. No chemical fertilisers are used and the harvest is hand picked each vintage, Claude says he is usually the last in each appellation to pick which shows on the ripe fruited nature of his wines. After harvest the bunches are sorted by hand and gently de-stemmed before vinification using natural yeasts. The fermenting must is pumped over twice daily and once alcoholic fermentation is finished the wines are placed into oak barrels where they mature for between 10 and 15 months. From tastings of back vintages at the domaine it is clear these are wines that are built to age well. Claude has not changed his prices for the 2021 vintage.

Domaine Belleville
Domaine Belleville was created in Rully by the Dumont family at the beginning of the 20th century, and now has 28 hectares spread out from North to South Burgundy. Impressive winery equipment ensures only the best grapes are selected for vinification and the wines are pure and precise. The estate was purchased by two Americans (one an academic at Harvard, one in finance), and already changes are being made including a refresh of the packaging. Young winemaker Charles is highly enthusiastic about the new direction of the estate. With a terroir, plot focused portfolio, Belleville is creating wines of great concentration at great prices.Charles asserts that the move to organic practice has resulted in higher natural acidity in the wines. 10% whole bunch. 30% new oak throughout the reds. Pretty red fruit aromas with some spice. Rich and juicy palate. Very drinkable.

The 2018 “La Bauge” is a classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It is a wine of great aromatics and character showing black cherry/cranberry fruit, rose petal, earth and spice. It has a lavish structure and rich wood scents. Balance is the key to this wine. A balance of oak and fruit, a balance of tannin and acid, and a balance of elegance and intensity. The "La Bauge" Pinots have a more integrated structure and suppleness early on, making them enjoyable now, though they will age well.

Domaine Alain Gras
Packed full of wild strawberry fruit with hints of raspberry, the palate adds a touch of spice to the sweet fruit and even a touch of coffee. This is a lovely approachable wine. Alain Gras is the reference point for St-Romain. This extremely steep village was considered part of the Hautes Côtes de Beaune until 1947. The vineyards are set back from the main Côte and mostly at higher elevation and have unquestionably improved in quality by the changes in climate and no longer struggle to reach full physiological maturity. The domaine covers 12 hectares with 8ha being planted with Chardonnay and 4ha to Pinot Noir. There are 42 separate parcels but Alain prefers to blend the grapes into one cuvée.

Gaëlle et Jérôme Meunier created their own domain 12 years ago. Their vines are planted on 10 hectares in 4 appellations Mercurey, Rully, Santenay and Puligny-Montrachet (including 1.2ha of 1er Cru). Their production is 100 % hand harvested and reflects their terroir. Gaelle harvested her whites quite early to retain acidity and this has given them a lean, mineral feel. Lightly purple. Bright fresh fruit, good concentration. Redcurrant, blackcurrant, raspberry, herbs, baking spices. Creamy, toasty oak. Well structured, moderately rich dark tannins, clear acidity. Rene Bouvier
Le Finage, which means territory, is the name given to this wine from different Marsannay plots. The vines grow on several clay-limestone soils, producing a fully rounded wine, in which you will find energetic tannins, fruity aromas (raspberry), and spices. Consistency and freshness mark the finish of this perfect ambassador for the appellation. We recommend drinking this wine during its dynamic first 5 years, but it can be kept for longer. It may be necessary to decant certain vintages in their first few years. Depending on the vintage, we use 50% whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is aged for about 12 months in barrels (with 15% of new barrels) and 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Patrick Javillier
Thankfully Savigny-Les-Beaune has yet to scale the stratospheric price mountains of its neighbours and still offers excellent value. Javillier’s, 100% destemmed, has fine plush tannins over beautifully perfumed red fruits, strawberries and cream with the faintest whiff of char from discretely balanced oak. Long with great persistence, excellent composure, and layers of complexing earth, mineral characters. Delicious rendition.

Organic. natural, sustainable viticulture As Greg Sherwood MW says of the 2015 vintage of this wine: "This is what top quality German Pinot Noir is all about" Super-serious grower, family-owned since 1849, organic, natural sustainable viticulture. Based in the prime Pfalz vineyards around Deidesheim and Forst, Von Buhl is up there with the best in this classic region - relatively warm by German standards, just north from the French Alsace wine region along the Rhine. As Jancis Robinson OBE MW notes this is a super spot for wine bargains. The nose shouts Pinot Noir: strawberry; spice; warm hay; all the classic markers. A whiff of oak, less animal than Burgundy, less plump than California. On the palate more classically German with bright elevated acidity, a cool lift. Let it breathe long, this is a bargain serious Pinot in the pale and mysterious idiom, well worth a look!
