The Sémillon beautifully complements the Sauvignon Blanc, and the palate is well-balanced with acidity and impressive weight. Vineyards for his wines are leased and grapes sourced from around the Western Cape, maritime in nature where possible. Granitic soil is the focus. Sourced from a wind-exposed site in Polkadraai on granitic soils, this blend spends two years aging—first in old 500-liter barrels and then in foudres and conical tanks. The bouquet expresses brambly red fruit and light tertiary scents, while the medium-bodied palate offers a pliant entry, with white pepper and fennel spices lifting the finish. A sophisticated, harmonious wine of wonder. 94/100 Vinous Neil Martin

Fruit! Glorious fruit! Oh my, what a delicious wine made up of Alicante Bouschet 70% and Grenache Noir 30%. The very friendliest Alicante we have ever tasted. Dreamy, sweet blueberry and fresh blackberry fruit that is pleasingly aromatic, juicy, seamless that sits just right on the palate. Perfect for when you want the pleasures of gorgeous fruit with nice depth and presence but with a delightful lightness of touch because of the moderate alcohol (only 12.5% abv) and pleasingly light, soft tannin. Utterly great on its own or with lighter meat dishes. Wonderful and unique. "Rhonejolais", if you will.

Domaine Vendome
From a breathtaking 0.5 hectare site on Chaban at 400+ metres altitude that was passed on to the Roudier family by the retiring Jean-Marie Teysseire, a legendary figure in Cornas and Saint-Peray. The Syrah vines are 80++ yrs of age on granitic soils including a portion of the mineral baryte, a clear crystal/quartz looking mark that gives the wine its mysterious sounding name. The vines are deeply established on this steep hillside, cut into terraces and oriented East/South-East. An utterly beautiful, natural granite amphitheatre that protects the vines from the cold winds. Wow, if the 2021 showed some of the extraordinary potential of this incredible Cornas site, this 2022 shows it a good deal more - it is without doubt, an outstanding wine. This time the wine has been aged in 500l. demi-muids, with 25% new. Beautiful floral aromatics on the nose with glorious lifted fruit. on the nose. Dense and multi-layered fruit on the palate that finishes with mineral and iron notes. Beautifully knit tannins wrap all this up wonderfully. Huge potemtial here.

Az. Agr. Castellaccio
Davide Bottai is the fourth generation to produce wine at Castellaccio, an eleven hectare estate that historically sold its grapes as bulk. Even before Davide’s recent transformational changes, the winery was already a pioneer, having converted to organic farming in 2013 at the behest of his grandfather and the previous management team. The vineyards are all high elevation for the Chianti Classico DOCG, all between 500m and 700m above sea level where sandstone and quartz dominate the soils. The eleven hectares are split between Lamole and Lucolena, including some of the highest vineyard sites, and, THE very highest vineyard site in all of Chianti Classico. All of the beautiful fruit from these outstanding, unsung and nearly-forgotten terroirs see wild fermentation in concrete before aging in various vessels - 25hl, tonneau or untoasted Burgundy barrels. A unique expression of Sangiovese - a wine that is direct, with great tension and a vertebral column. Coming from the northeast slope of Lucolena, the "Lama della Rinascita" produces the most lively Sangiovese of the vintage totalling only 600 bottles (as single tonneau). This is the coolest, wettest microclimate of all of Castellaccio’s sites that brings a wine of sharp focus, a great mineral, saline profile. A wine of rock, where crisp red fruit dances with electric tension - a pure vision of Sangiovese from Lucolena magnificently realised.

Tenute di Carleone
Something different. 100% Sangiovese from two high altitude sites (at Radda and Lamole). The grapes are picked late to get maximum ripeness from these beautiful high-lying vineyards. Fermented in cement tanks with 20% whole bunches. The long maceration of 4 months gives the wine a wonderful lifted fruit character, which differentiates it from the more classic styles. The Wine Advocate:cWith its elegant white wax capsule, the Tenuta di Carleone 2022 ‘Il Guercio’ is partially made with feet-stomped Sangiovese (and up to 50% whole-cluster fruit) sourced from the village of Lamole, with its verdant vineyard landscapes and high elevations. This IGT red is balanced and bright with a lean consistency. The fruit tones are presented with good intensity and layered nuance. You get some of the bitter flavours from the skins (from extended maceration), red apple, wild herb, blue flower and crushed stone. Drink now-2035. 95 points Vinous: The 2022 Il Guercio is laced with hints of wild cherry, kirsch, dried flowers, mint and white pepper. High-toned aromatics remind me of Gianfranco Soldera’s Brunellos, This ethereal, gracious pure Sangiovese needs time in bottle to come together. It is undeniably attractive. Drink now-2037. 94 points

This site brings a wine with a well structured body with a vertebral column of vibrant acidity dictated by the altitude. The wine is aged in fine-grained tonneaux which help give a silky, elegant texture to enveloping, sunny, energetic liquid. A Sangiovese of finesse, and vibrancy. Outstanding. 600 bottles produced.

Thistledown
A deliciously vibrant style of Australian Shiraz with succulent raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, hints of spice and elegant, seamless texture. Hailing from the 2021 vintage, thought by many to be the best of century thus far, The Quickening draws on fruit grown on Joel Matschoss’ challenging site high in the Eden Valley. Low yielding fruit is hand picked, wild fermented and aged in French oak for 11 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The combination of earlier picking, gentle extractions and subtle oak results in a wine with impressive energy, depth, fruit and complexity. 95/100 - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 95/100 The Vintage Journal, Andrew Caillard MW and Angus Hughson

Produced from their crus, Cerretta (shared with G Conterno whose Barolo sells at £250 a bottle, compared with Garesio's at £85 and Altare) and the young vines of Bricco delle Viole owned by the famous Vajra, whose Barolo from this vineyard sells at £80 a bottle. Gorgeous aromas of wild rose and notes of wild strawberries, which over time evolve with pink pepper. Very good aromatic persistence in the mouth, and velvety tannins and a very persistent finish. In the 2024 vintage, the white grapes macerated for two months, extracting a flavour and texture that adds to the concentration in a charming, unique way. The result is a crystal-clear wine that evokes the finesse of a Fleurie, a Pinot Noir or a Poulsard, combining the joy of complex "glou-glou" with a deep and heartfelt historical nod. Unique, exciting and quite brilliant.

Tenute di Carleone
From the hills of Radda, right in the centre of the Chianti Classico region. A cooler style of Chianti with bright and pure fruit, balanced by savouriness and a textural finish. Fermented and aged in a mixture of cement, steel and old Burgundian & Austrian oak. Press reviews: Jancis Robinson MW: Tasty. So appetising and beautifully balanced with lots of oomph. 17.5 points Walter Speller on jancisrobinson.com: Just mid ruby. A stunning minerally, savoury nose with hints of liquorice root. Sleek, tangy cherry fruit on the palate and richly tannic, yet finely balanced and long. Drink now-2033. 17.5 points The Wine Advocate: This is one of the most original wines from the appellation. The Tenuta di Carleone 2022 Chianti Classico sees partial whole-cluster fruit and up to three months of extended fermentation. The wine opens to a medium-garnet colour with a shiny element to its appearance. The bouquet is similarly bright and punchy with lots of tart red and blue fruits. This wine is extremely giving and bright at the moment. Drink now-2032. 94 points Decanter: Overreaching its annata categorisation, the estate’s single Chianti Classico bottling showcases Sangiovese in purezza. It captures the freshness and clarity of the cool, forested heights even in this hot, arid vintage. Beyond the glorious perfumes of cardamom, juniper and orange zest, the palate is where this really shines. Midweight with a redcurrant, raspberry crunch and tangy mineral depths. Chalky tannins are long and layered, clinging firmly in all the right places and lending ample textural drama. It rings out with energy and agility. Drink now-2031. 93 points Vinous: The 2022 Chianti Classico is gracious, elegant and polished, as these wines so often are. Crushed flowers, herbs, mint, pine and light citrus overtones exalt the natural brightness of Sangiovese. This translucent, weightless Chianti Classico is a real beauty. Drink now-2036. 92 points

Natural, biodynamic and vegan. Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre from 80 year old vines, Made without filtering or fining. Pale but gorgeous mid red colour. Domaine Vendome
100% Marsanne from loess soils at Larnage that abut Hermitage. Vendome's name for plot is "Chapelle". Grapes are hand-harvested then destemmed, pressed, steel vat fermented until specific gravity 1040, then new 228-litre oak (steamed not toasted) cask fermented, raised 10 months, malo blocked, first year 2023, wide bottle, organic wine, 2,500 bottles produced. "Yellow robe; the nose has a walnut aroma up front, a peach, infused herbal tea backdrop, discreet cooked lemon. The palate opens with elegance, holds attractive gras, is a little locked away for now, but the quality of the gras - its relaxed nature - bodes well for the future. The length works well, is refined and sure. This is classy, serene. Decant it. 13°. 100% Marsanne. 2030-31 Oct 2024 ****(*) on Drink Rhone, John Livingstone-Learmonth "Pure Marsanne grown on loess next to the Hermitage Hill. A very special wine from ancient plants of two of the rarest and very best vines for Soualnes terroir, Grenache Gris and Carignan Gris. This really does have everything. Garesio
For price to quality ratio, this is an astonishing bottling, being produced from the perimeter rows of their two cru vineyards, Cerretta and Gianetto. Gorgeous, almost weightless nose of violets, plums, pot pourri and dried mushrooms. It floats across the palate, with stunning length fine-boned tannins. These are Barolo for the ages. These are like fine, restrained Burgundies, that at first nosing and taste, you could miss, but give them the time they need, and they are glorious, with the classical Serralunga terroir nose of roses and minerals. Sharing vineyards with Giacomo Conterno and Altare, their cellar is located between their two cru sites, Ceretta and Gianetto. They farm organically, but as the sites both border non-organic neighbouring vineyards, they do not declare it. All wines are vinifed and aged in the same way so as to best express their identity and terroir. "Serralunga d'Alba. Mid ruby. Subdued with sweet-spice notes. Ripe, mouth-filling fruit with plenty of succulent acidity and bags of powdery tannins. Hedonistic". 16.5/20 Walter Speller on jancisrobinson.com

"This lovely vintage Champagne from Deutz has everything you’d want in a fine glass of fizz, with candied citrus, peach and pineapple, a touch of honey, cappuccino froth and freshly-baked biscuit, while proving zesty and chalky too, making for a full-flavoured form of refreshment." Patrick Schmitt (MW) The year 2015 was marked by exceptional heat and drought in Champagne, creating ideal conditions for healthy vine growth. The rainy period in August favoured the rapid ripening of the grapes, which reached an exceptional quality. It has spent 9 years on the less, disgorged March 2024. La Vigna Di San Martino Ad Argiano
Outstanding Chianti Classico Riserva from the cooler north west of Chianti. Grown on soils very similar to Felsina's vineyards in Berardenga, this cooler terroir in Argiano helps produce a wine of great energy, elegance and inherent harmony. La Vigna di San Martino ad Argiano is the personal project of Giampaolo Chiettini. Giampaolo spent a good number of years working alongside Paolo di Marchi at Isole e Olena where he fell deeply in love with Sangiovese and honed his skills and became a very highly regarded winemaker of the region. Antinori and Ca' del Bosco have also used Giampaolo's services over the years. He still consults and makes wine for the outstanding Castagnoli and brilliant newcomers Ejamu amongst others. This personal project comes from a beautiful, tiny (1ha!) vineyard in Argiano in the San Casciano Val di Pesa commune. Organic Sangiovese grapes are destemmed and gently crushed then undergo wild fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine is bred in used tonneaux. Giampaolo's trained, light hand in the cellar has helped produce a really rather wonderful Chianti Classico Riserva. This 2022 knocked us out. Immense energy and focus to the wonderful fruit and character. Only 2,000 bottles produced. This wine proves utterly marvellous drinking now, but shall age gracefully and beautifully for many years. We can't wait to follow the evolution! "The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva is an intense, brooding wine. Super-ripe cherry, tobacco, new leather blood orange and cinnamon lend an exotic flair. This complex, dynamic Riserva has a ton to offer, starting with its considerable character. It's one of the most pleasant surprises of my tastings for this report. The Riserva is on the riper side of things, but its personality is so distinctive". Antonio Galloni July 2025 Drinking Window 2025 - 2034 91/100

Domaine Laguerre
Very rare, very low production. One of the legendary white wines of the Roussillon grown at elevation (500m) in a vineyard called 'Le Soula' (the name adopted by the neighbouring estate Eric Laguerre was once involved with) high in Saint-Martin-de-Fenouillet, on granite soils. Mineral, taught, fine and long with beautiful texture. A blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle, Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Outstanding wine which can age gracefully for 25++ years. Beautiful vineyards that are beautifully worked by the master Eric Laguerre. After first visiting the vineyard back in September 2009, we are very happy to now be importing the wines from Domaine Laguerre exclusively to the UK market. The Rhône cannot make white wines like this, although they carry a far higher price which somehow, wrongly, implies that they are somehow better, more valuable. This wine. Spliced by acidity that is so laser focused yet so gentle that it feels like the fall of spring petals through sunlight and falls like a blade of obsidian leaving a cut so fine that only the air drew breath in its wake. This wine. Tastes of Reine Claude plums so sweet the flesh has turned liquid to honey inside the green-gold skin, of cardamom husk caught in the pot of cream coddling slowly on the stove; of pink grapefruit and sucking on a twist of aromatic peel. Exquisite freshness; nacreous beauty; and yet almost shockingly bare of winemaking tricks. It's beautiful. Complete. A lunar cycle in the glass; waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, waning crescent. GV (TC)
