Weingut Max Ferd. Richter, Brauneberg

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter, Brauneberg
An archetypal Middle Mosel producer, this estate has been in the hands of the Richter family for 9 generations, operating continuously in the wine export business since 1680. Their first family holdings were purchased in Brauneberg in 1643, but it was not until 1880, and the construction of their winery, that production started to move in-house. Currently run by Dr. Dirk Richter, helped by his son Constantin, Weingut Richter now cultivate just over 19 hectares of vines, their holdings stretching from Brauneberg to Erden. The vineyards are planted to 95% Riesling and 5% Weissburgunder, with an average age of 40 years.

What we say:
Unusual fragrance which depends less on fruit than fine floral, spicy and herbal aromas for interest of aromatic expression. On the palate initially it’s all heading in the herbal direction, peach brings in a bit of fleshy fruit, full body and rich texture reflect the concentration afforded by the old vines of the Domprobst. A mild-mannered acidity leaves it to ginger spice and a dusty minerality to get a grip on the finish. There’s something burgundian about this.
In common with other winemakers who have prime holdings on the steep slate slopes of the Mosel valley, most vineyard work and harvesting are done manually. They use all-natural fertilisers and are committed to sustainable farming. Vinification is traditional, with slow, temperature controlled fermentation in large old oak barrels (fuder). Courtesy of their long winemaking heritage, Richter have one of the finest collections of venerable fuder in the whole Mosel, helping impart a subtle complexity to their wines. Where possible, fermentation is with natural yeasts, and artificial fining agents are eschewed. Richter’s wines seek terroir specificity at every level, and their range of vineyard-specific prädikat wines represent excellent value. Their house style elegantly balances residual sugar with acidity, with classic apple and lime fruit flavours complemented by gunflint, slate and herbal nuances. Richter’s Estate Riesling is a long-time favourite glass pour for our own bars, and we have been lucky to work alongside Dirk for many years
