Mineral, saline aromas. Quite spicy. A little bit tropical, guava, passionfruit. Melon fruit, juicy, vibrant. Totally different. Very juicy. Textural. Plump but not fat. Bigger boned.

A textured and savoury wine. It shows fleshy white nectarine and orchard fruit, alongside a flint-focussed precision on the palate, with a grainy and honeyed richness. It shows crystalline purity, with powerful savoury oak, and layered complexity.

Pale gold in colour, this Chardonnay shows bright citrus aromas and a flinty minerality, with subtle hints of French oak vanilla. The palate is refined and lively, reflecting the concentration of the 2023 vintage, with fresh lemon flavours, ripe nectarine, crisp acidity, and elegant structure. A long, intense fruity finish adds depth and persistence, delivering a wine that is both focused and graceful. This Chardonnay exhibits the classic Folding Hill style with gentle oak influence. A heady fragrance of peony and violets, red cherry and pomegranate, overlaid with a smoky, earthy savouriness. The character reflects the perfume and delicacy of the vintage, whilst retaining its innate muscular tannin structure that ensures it will age very well. The palate shows great intensity, complexity and structure.

How can one not love that instant bath of flowers, fruits and spice that this wine delivers? No holding back, no reticence at all, just a wash of Cornish Point indulgence - all leading to a flowing silky finish. Through the entire palate there is a gentle mineral seam that stops anything from tipping over into excess, so it seduces rather than hollers. There will be no lack of complexity to come for those with patience, but it is very hard to resist now. Sometimes it can be hard to find a word to match what seems so clear to the senses. The nose is dark, as is the colour, beguiling, but restrained. There is a stature to the palate here; a sort of authority to the way it stands back and allows you to explore its detail. A definite sprig of herbs, chocolate notes, but still so transparent that every nuance is revealed. Varietal with a gentle herbacous quality transitioning into ripe white fleshed fruits of apple and lemon, a touch of pineapple then a light white vegtable quality. Crisp, taut, fruity, refreshing and dry with complexity from bottle development and a whisper of toastiness, there is plenty to admire, but this wine is also young with acidity and energy as well. As the wine becomes more ambient the flavours and textures grow and develop. A thoroughly interesting example, balanced and well made.

Right from the get-go, this sets itself apart from the rest of the pack with a level of polish, complexity and balance. The nose has ripe peach and mango fruits; gentle savoury, yeasty complexity adds biscuity aromas too. The palate has an immediate sense of concentration and the textural richness builds in smooth layers; there’s pear and nectarine, and a juicy, precise finish. Scents of a summer orchard: juicy nectarines, plump sun-dried apricots and tree-ripened lemons mingled with musky oriental spices. The palate is silky and sumptuous – warm honeyed stone fruit with almonds and shortcake. A lithe, textural wine of intense richness, laced with a citrusy, sherbet-like zest.

A lovely bouquet, youthful and vibrant, crunchy and fresh with scents of red berry fruits and a light savoury dried herb touch. A layer of new oak and woody spice qualities adds bredth. On the palate a dry wine, youthful and textured, dry and savoury, a core of red berry fruits and paprika smoke spices. Well made with plenty of tannin and acidity for mouthfeel. Best drinking from 2025 through 2031+ Expressive aromatics, with flint, Meyer lemon, and a subtle short bread note. A well-rounded palate with volume and mouthfeel. Flavours of passion and stone fruit, sweet herbs and a fine boned acid finish. Enjoy with sushi, mussels, oysters and light salads.

A particularly elegant, finely balanced example of Marlborough Chardonnay. Ripe, concentrated flavours of citrus and nectarine fruit with barrel ferment nuttiness and a slightly creamy texture help to give a subtly persistent weight and finish. The wine shows an array of fruit characters, ranging from citrus through to tropical notes. This is complemented by some secondary characters from the natural yeast ferments and some barrel ageing. The palate has an elegant structure with a creamy, textural mid-palate and a long finish.

A vivid nose of deep florals: dark roses, violets, and an undertow of ripe red fruit. The palate really shows the best of each vineyard that makes up the cuvée. A pure but powerful drive of fruit on a perfect cusp of ripeness, with complexing notes of sandalwood and spice. This is all about harmony and balance with the transparency of fruit allowing the detail to shine through. Silken tannins finish the package. The influence of wild yeast, vineyard site, barrel ferment and time on lees makes for a rich and textural style of Sauvignon Blanc. Fifteen months in French barriques has given this wine a well-rounded textural palate while still retaining freshness at the back of the palate.

A seductive combination of white nectarine, pink grapefruit and candied orange rind mingles with the more savoury aromas of roasted chestnuts and hot buttered brioche – an elaborate concoction infused with linseed and woodsmoke. The savouriness carries through onto a wonderfully dry palate that has great texture and concentration, with distinct flintiness, tight structure and terrific ageing potential.

The Kerruick family bought this small 5 hectare farm near Bendigo at the beginning of the century, originally planting only Pinot Noir. The Estate Pinot Noir has consisitently won plaudits from wine critics since the 2008 vintage, only their second release. The Ballasalla is made for earlier drinking. 100% destemmed Pinot Noir, aged in oak barriques for 6 months. A full and rich bouquet, this wine is mouth-filling, ripe and supple with a great complexity. Dark cherries and plums combine with soft tannins to give a well-rounded finish. The wine comes from four vineyards throughout Marlborough, all lending different characters to wine. The Twin Valleys portion (62%) from the cooler Fareham Road area gives us the palate structure that we require, offering finesse to the back-palate. The portion from Ward (13%) approx 45 kms south of Blenheim provides delicate lifted fruit notes whilst the two hillside portions from The Wrekin (13%) and Calrossie (12%) add depth to the palate, with rich black fruit characters.

Clearly many steps above standard NZSB, a masterpiece of subtlety from the co-founder of Cloudy Bay.
