In such a hot vintage such a spaetlese is of Auslese intensity. Impossibly succulent, like an over-ripe pear, with mint and mineral notes, cool and bright with tight lime acidity. Impossible ancient family grower, exceptional best-in-a-generation vintage.

Water-white. Very introvert nose. Still extremely youthful but with hints of a complex cocktail of passion fruit and minerals to come. Grainy texture on the finish. This is a baby! Super-clean finish. 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a sensitive, sublime, complex, exquisite and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and delicate expression of stewed apricots and some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet refined and savoury palate, with coolish apricot flavours on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr. This is a great pleasure to drink, but you can easily keep this Kabinett for over three decades. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Drink 2022-2070 Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate (July 2022)

Von Schubert
Vinous: A lovely nose of fresh apple garlanded in apple blossom and honeysuckle is followed by a silken, delicate, generously juicy palate in which the fruit is adeptly supported by discreet sweetness. The floral perfume continues inner-mouth for a delectably billowing effect, and the lusciously long finish features a sense of transparency to wet stone and tinglingly gingery nuances that were missing from the dry wines of the present collection. An ancient former monastic wine estate on the famous Maximin Grünhaus hill in the Ruwer, where wine has been made for 2000 years or so. Three of the region’s top vineyards, for which von Schubert are world-famous, sit on this hill: Herrenberg; Bruderberg; Abstberg. Von Schubert's wines are taut, mineral, deft and delightful - perfect classics of their style.

Schloss Lieser
The bouquet here is first and foremost slate-led as wisps of fine smoke, spontaneous fermentation and herbs suggest an altogether brittle and crispy palate to come. In the end though, there is sufficient depth and sweetness, not to mention a deliciously spicy component which brings an array of stone fruits and earth-bound sensations all together to a very long, grippy finish. A Spätlese with high levels of ripeness, freshness and a certain austerity – this is high definition stuff! Justerini & Brooks. Temporarily cheesy, reductive aromatic overtones on the nose thankfully do little to spoil the delight in emerging scents of apple and pink grapefruit wreathed in honeysuckle and heliotrope. Satiny in feel and possessed of generous primary juiciness, this finishes with soothing persistence, its sweetness obvious but supportive and an appropriate undertone of wet stone perceptible even through such rich fruitiness. Vinous.

Weingut Max Ferd.Richter
The Erdener Treppchen is one of the most legendary vineyard sites on the Mosel and was already an active vineyard in Roman times. The iron-rich, red slate soil gives the Rieslings grown here their very own intense minerality and race. This offers very refined and deeply complex notes of peach, orchard fruits, citrus and dried flowers. The wine combines a delicious creaminess and zest with freshness. It is racy and multi-layered on the palate with a sappy and very long finish. This terrific Spätlese is a great ambassador of the Estate’s classical airy and delicate style.

Garnet in colour, mostly opaque and bright. The nose takes a few minutes to open and then shows cherries and black cherries with some spice. On the palate, this is full bodied with a nice nice texture. Lots of black cherry fruit. A bit of anise on the long finish. Blind, I think I would have guessed Oregon or maybe California here due to all the ripe fruit. Still quite young, perhaps another two or three years will calm it down for those looking for more elegance. I quite enjoyed this as is. It will continue to drink nicely for a decade. Great on its own, this will work well with classic Pinot dishes such as roasted duck.

A juicy, approachable, salty-citrus leaning fruit forward mini-GG that sings with easy, crisp clear fruit. Great flavour development and deep length. A lovely acid balance renders this fresh but not crispy. Justerini & Brooks.

Selbach-Oster
The Selbachs have been cultivating Riesling vines in the Mosel since 1661. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara run the estate, now one of the leading producers in the Mittelmosel. There are 10.6 hectares of vineyards including holdings in Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, and Graacher Domprobst. The grapes are handpicked and then fermented in traditional large oak barrels. The emphasis here is on finesse and purity of fruit, producing supremely elegant Kabinett and Spätlese wines as well as powerful, concentrated Auslese wines.

Schloss Lieser
An immensely calm and composed Kabinett of crushed minerals and glorious sunny yellow fruits that fans out across the palate in a veritable slick of seamlessly fused fruit and minerals. Lithe and charming but also regal in length - Thomas Haag really showing off the qualities of this noble vineyard. Justerini & Brooks. A cheesy fermentative residue somewhat clouds the nose, but from behind that emerge scents of fresh apple and sea breeze, anticipating the salinity, juiciness and crispness that dominate on a (for a Wehlener) surprisingly firm, lean palate. A garlanding of heliotrope and honeysuckle also runs through this entire performance, which culminates in bright, mouthwatering length. To an especially remarkable extent – though this is basically true of all the vintage 2017 Schloss Lieser Kabinetts – high residual sugar is successfully balanced out by efficacious acidity and extract. This will almost certainly be even finer in the future. Vinous.

Reichsrat von Buhl
Organic. natural, sustainable viticulture As Greg Sherwood MW says of the 2015 vintage of this wine: "This is what top quality German Pinot Noir is all about" Super-serious grower, family-owned since 1849, organic, natural sustainable viticulture. Based in the prime Pfalz vineyards around Deidesheim and Forst, Von Buhl is up there with the best in this classic region - relatively warm by German standards, just north from the French Alsace wine region along the Rhine. As Jancis Robinson OBE MW notes this is a super spot for wine bargains. The nose shouts Pinot Noir: strawberry; spice; warm hay; all the classic markers. A whiff of oak, less animal than Burgundy, less plump than California. On the palate more classically German with bright elevated acidity, a cool lift. Let it breathe long, this is a bargain serious Pinot in the pale and mysterious idiom, well worth a look!

Max Ferd Richter
The Mülheimer Sonnenlay is the largest single Richter vineyard and the source of the world-renowned “Zeppelin” Riesling. The vineyard sits on the west-southwestern side of a slate stone hill south of Mülheim, a dry riverbed formed during the last ice age 250,000 years ago. The name of the vineyard– Sonne (sunshine) and lay (slate stone) –perfectly describes the characteristics of the site. This often extremely steep vineyard has a loose slate stone soil structure that is enriched by pebbles, loam and sand deposited by the ancient river. This kind of soil creates wines that combine typical slate stone mineral character with animated and elegant fruitiness. Grapes from the hillside are also used to produce Richter’s single vineyard, singlevintage sparkling brut wine. Wines from the Mülheimer Sonnenlay were served on the luxurious Zeppelin airships -including the Hindenburg – in the 1920s and 30s. Local growers, proud of this distinction, commissioned Bauhaus artist Hans Schlösser to design a label for the wine incorporating the iconic Zeppelin airship. The label is still featured today.

Daniel Vollenweider
Daniel Vollenweider originates from Switzerland, specifically from the Grison canton, and it was a bottle of Egon Müller's Auslese that would make him radically change his life and dedicate himself to the world of wine. He began working in a wine shop, which enabled him to get to know a great many winery owners, until he then started to work for one of them: Fromm. In the Fromm winery, in Switzerland, he started off by making Pinot Noir wines, but soon left for the winery Fromm owned in New Zealand, to take charge of their Riesling vineyards. He fell in love with this variety and decided to return to Europe and set himself up in the region that is this grape's real heartland: the Moselle.
