Callum Powell has learnt from the best when it comes to Syrah. He practically grew up in the cellars at Torbreck, the Barossa winery his father co-founded, watching it grow from the modest start up in a small shed to the international power house of today. He spent a year at Jean-Louis Chave in the Northern Rhone, one of THE top producers of Hermitage and St Joseph, learning more about his craft. His recent project with his father named Powell & Son sought out the best vineyards in Barossa and Eden and experimented with natural winemaking and indigenous yeasts, and gained him much international attention. Callum now brings his knowledge and natural instinct to his own wines. Sourcing fruit from his family's vineyards as well as the famous Hoffmann sites, Callum is quickly stepping out of his father’s shadow and making a name for himself. His time in Hermitage and the many hours working the perilously steep slopes of the vineyards continues to influence him today. His wines are both named after the towns from which the fruit is sourced, recalling the site specific way of naming wines in Hermitage. And he even likens his different wines to the characteristics produced from the different lieux-dits of Chave. Producing wines with a very light hand, with only minimal SO2 added a atr bottling, Callum aims to create lithe wines that are pure, unadulterated, and without the heavy oak influence that the region is known for, with a true traceability of place. Classic, bold, rich and beautiful Ebenezer fruit but with real energy and acidity. Pretty much perfect Barosssa Shiraz. It's classic, but modern - in the best sense. The 2015 was a wine of the week in 2020. Transparent, shaded garnet. Very mellow, well-integrated blend. Very luxuriously textured. Well-judged blend that's already approachable. Blackcurrants, blackberries and sagebrush. Lots of drive and when you taste this, you do wonder where they are going to go next, upwards the price scale. What's wrong with this? Many congratulations to the Henschke family and their growers. Very long. Went beautifully with roast beef.

An array of characters such as violets, oregano & thyme, along with glacé cherry Sweet ripe cherry fruit dominates the front palate which then develops into a more savoury wine, showing earthiness, toasted spices and lovely dried herb characters.

Moorooduc Estate is a family-run wine business, established in 1982 by Richard and Jill McIntyre. The McIntyre vineyard sits on a gentle north to north-westerly facing slope, around 80 metres above sea level, where the vines are planted on clay soils with sandy topsoils. The oldest vines in the vineyard were planted in 1983. Deep ruby colour and a rich nose of blackcurrant leaf and blackberry pastilles, fragrant violets, licorice, black pepper, cloves and nutmeg. More red fruited on the palate, with plum, red berries and a touch of the spice notes from the nose. The tannins are firm but fine and are in happy balance with some tangy red berry acidity. The finish is long and juicy, and the wine is a delightful match to boeuf en daube, or any slow cooked beef dish with tomatoes, onions, red wine and plenty of black pepper in the gravy.

Founder Phil Sexton owns the ‘Sexton’ vineyard next to Coldstream Hills and Yarra Yering. This is the heart of the Yarra Valley, where poor soils result in minuscule yields and intense, concentrated wines. Planted by Lou Primavera in 2001, the ‘Primavera’ vineyard is 12 hectares of red clay loam, facing north/northeast. Giant Steps has a long-standing relationship with the Primavera family, having sourced fruit for their vineyard for years. The red friable soil is critical in shaping the complex structure and pronounced perfume of the ‘Primavera’ vineyard Pinot Noir.

This Shiraz has an intense crimson colour with youthful purple hues. Generous, mouth-filling sweet blackberries, raspberries and plums cover the palate with lashings of sweet spice. Firm but fine tannins and dark chocolatey nuances continue throughout the lengthy palate with a youthful finish.

The wine is deep red with youthful violet hues, with a nose that offers an intriguing mix of cherries, raspberry sweets and pink pepper. The palate offers wild cherry, blackberry and a hint of balsamic balanced by spicy oak. This wine has a high level of natural acidity, well-balanced by the fine, rounded tannins.

An absolutely pitch-perfect old vine Grenache from McLaren Vale from the top team at Thistledown. Beautiful, lifted and perfumed fruit with some high-toned herbal notes from the inclusion of 30% whole-bunch. On the palate this little Devil shows utter, glorious drinkability that comes from serious, but hands off - with nothing forced - top, top winemaking. The wine has the characteristic McLaren Vale perfume and spice with a beguiling texture and perfume that unfolds, layer by layer. This delicately hued red is very elegant with vibrant wild strawberry, spice and silky texture. Outstanding. In 2022 this cuvee is really not too far away from the glorious single site offerings that this outstanding estate produce year on year from some of the greatest old vine Grenache sites in the Vale. An utter bargain and a dream of a drink. 10/10. Gorgeous Grenache indeed! A very easy drinking red. Healthy dose of red fruit and cherry.

A new cuvée here from Basket Range - a juicy, fruity, delicious chillable red blend. From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: This wine is comprised predominately of Merlot and Petit Verdot from our vineyard. These were macerated with the use of whole bunches and with gentle handling, which gives lifted fruit and a spice from the stalks. The components were then blended with small amount of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. This makes for a red wine with gentle tannin and a lifted mid-palate. The Bantam is a dynamic wine that showcases juicy soft plums, white pepper, and graphitic tannin, with a savoury, highly drinkable quality. Designed for earlier drinking, it's best served cooler, at about 12c.

The youngest child in Vasse's stable of Cabs, Filius offers affordability, approachability and a glimpse of the greatness the top wines in this classic Cab region can achieve. Low yielding, old vines are picked in small parcels and remain separate until final blending. Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are on aged lees, there is no racking until final blending and no fining or filtration. Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly effects vineyards all over the world. One half, or an 'arm' of the vine slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side display amazing intensity.

From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: This wine is the evolution of the style my father made using the same fruit; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. These vines were planted first in the early 1980s and at our new adjacent vineyard in 2001. Growing these varieties and making them into wine, I see the quality of the site and concentration of the fruit. Each block sits at a northern facing aspect on loamy clay over sandstone. The wine shows ripeness of tannin, structure and balance, while having energy and elegance. A reflection of an excellent site for these varieties. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon predominant blend (75%) with Merlot (19%) and Petit Verdot (6%). Each component was fermented in 2000L vats and matured in French barriques for 10 months. The 2022 Estate Cabernet is a pretty special wine for me. The 2021 Estate Cabernet was awarded the "Best Cabernet Trophy" at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show in 2022. I feel the 2022 vintage release is the best job of it I have made so far. Only 230 dozen produced.

Opaque and ruby red in colour, Woolloomooloo Shiraz displays a nose of smoky, ripe berry fruits with a touch of mint. Smooth and rich on the palate with spicy flavours of luscious dark berry fruits. Vegan.

The altitude cools this otherwise super-deep wine. A true high-altitude Barossa classic. Founded 1972 by the legendary David Wynn. 550m above sea level, Mountadam is to this day the highest estate in South Australia and harvest can take place a full month later than in the lower Eden and Barossa Valley. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has crafted a delectable cool-climate Pinot from specially selected vineyards across the Yarra Valley. Deep purple red in colour, the wine is a heady mix of dark berry fruit, with earthy nuances and lifted florals from the addition of Viognier. Excellent structure, it has great depth and richness of plums and blackberries with supportive, balanced oak and a lingering finish.

The nose on Larry Cherubino's Cruel Mistress Pinot Noir shows graphite and minerals, juicy black cherries & a hint of spicy oak plays a supporting role. The palate is softly textured, fresh and vibrant, the flavours of black cherry and earthy beetroot carried along by a fine long acid finish. Larry Cherubino Wines was only established in 2005, but have already achieved significant success not least with Larry Cherubino Cruel Mistress Pinot Noir. Named ''Winery of the Year 2011'' in James Halliday''s Wine Companion and ''Producer of the Year'' by wine writer Matt Skinner in the same year.

Delicious, delicate and ethereal, herbaceous with wet-earth notes, brimming with red candy and sour cherry on the back palate. Serve lightly chilled with felafel, zatar, or spiced meats! Gorgeous wine. From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: Vineyards: Our vineyard situated at our property in Basket Range comprises 75% of this wine. It is predominantly 777 clone Pinot Noir from a north facing aspect, as well as some mv6 from the adjacent south facing block. The Manyara vineyard in Balhannah comprises the balance of this wine (25%). This fruit is 100% mv6 clone and was harvested at a similar time in late March to the other Pinot in this wine. Winemaking: Each parcel of fruit for this wine was fermented in 1500 and 2000L vats, with the sparing use of whole bunches, in what was a cooler year. Maceration ranged from 7-14 days, depending on the parcel, with daily gentle pump-overs for cap management. The wine was maturated in seasoned French barrique barrels for 8 months. The earlier-picked fruit, showing prettiness and tension, underwent a gentle fermentation process. This Pinot Noir showcases notes of bramble and forest floor, with a delicate, fine-tea like tannin structure that adds to its overall elegance and complexity.
