Henschke
First planted in 1860, the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard has been in the Henschke family since 1891, with Cyril Henschke producing its first single-vineyard Shiraz in 1958. Planted at 400 metres above sea level, this 4-hectare vineyard is named after the Gnandenberg Lutheran Church opposite (‘Gnadenberg’ translates to ‘Hill of Grace’ in German). The site’s original ‘Ancestors’ vines are now approximately 160 years old and remain at the heart of the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard, alongside a small selection of ungrafted ‘Centenarians’ (vines over 100 years old), ‘Survivors’ (vines over 70 years old) and ‘Old Vines’ (over 35 years old). 17.5/20 Jancis Robinson Full screwcapped bottle 1,233 g. 52% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot grown in the Barossa (Eden Valley and Barossa Valley regions). Harvest 26 February to 16 April. Matured in 17% new and 83% seasoned (80% French, 20% American) oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. TA 6.1 g/l, pH 3.59. The 2015 was a wine of the week in 2020. Transparent, shaded garnet. Very mellow, well-integrated blend. Very luxuriously textured. Well-judged blend that's already approachable. Blackcurrants, blackberries and sagebrush. Lots of drive and when you taste this, you do wonder where they are going to go next, upwards the price scale. What's wrong with this? Many congratulations to the Henschke family and their growers. Very long. Went beautifully with roast beef.

Thistledown
An absolutely pitch-perfect old vine Grenache from McLaren Vale from the top team at Thistledown. Beautiful, lifted and perfumed fruit with some high-toned herbal notes from the inclusion of 30% whole-bunch. On the palate this little Devil shows utter, glorious drinkability that comes from serious, but hands off - with nothing forced - top, top winemaking. The wine has the characteristic McLaren Vale perfume and spice with a beguiling texture and perfume that unfolds, layer by layer. This delicately hued red is very elegant with vibrant wild strawberry, spice and silky texture. Outstanding. In 2022 this cuvee is really not too far away from the glorious single site offerings that this outstanding estate produce year on year from some of the greatest old vine Grenache sites in the Vale. An utter bargain and a dream of a drink. 10/10. Basket Range Wines
From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: This wine is the evolution of the style my father made using the same fruit; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. These vines were planted first in the early 1980s and at our new adjacent vineyard in 2001. Growing these varieties and making them into wine, I see the quality of the site and concentration of the fruit. Each block sits at a northern facing aspect on loamy clay over sandstone. The wine shows ripeness of tannin, structure and balance, while having energy and elegance. A reflection of an excellent site for these varieties. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon predominant blend (75%) with Merlot (19%) and Petit Verdot (6%). Each component was fermented in 2000L vats and matured in French barriques for 10 months. The 2022 Estate Cabernet is a pretty special wine for me. The 2021 Estate Cabernet was awarded the "Best Cabernet Trophy" at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show in 2022. I feel the 2022 vintage release is the best job of it I have made so far. Only 230 dozen produced.

Giant Steps was acquired by Jackson Family Wine Estates in 2020. According to Phil Sexton, “this partnership brings us the relationships and careful resources of a great wine family who are committed to vineyards, sustainability and faithful expression of site.” Melanie Chester joined Giant Steps as Head of Winemaking and Viticulture in 2021. Supported by Steve Flamsteed, she works with the winemaking team to honestly express each vintage, grape variety and unique vineyard site in the final wines. Her approach embraces meticulous work in the vineyard and minimum intervention in the winery. The Giant Steps Single Vineyard wines are produced from their best sites in great years. Founder Phil Sexton owns the ‘Sexton’ vineyard next to Coldstream Hills and Yarra Yering. This is the heart of the Yarra Valley, where poor soils result in minuscule yields and intense, concentrated wines. Planted by Lou Primavera in 2001, the ‘Primavera’ vineyard is 12 hectares of red clay loam, facing north/northeast. Giant Steps has a long-standing relationship with the Primavera family, having sourced fruit for their vineyard for years. The red friable soil is critical in shaping the complex structure and pronounced perfume of the ‘Primavera’ vineyard Pinot Noir.

Basket Range Wines
Our vineyard is planted to approximately 50% Pinot Noir, over different aspects and soil types. This wine comes from vines planted on the south and southeast facing blocks and is a combination of MV6 and 777 clones. This block has a cooler, more protected aspect, enabling extended ripening flavour and tannin. This wine reflects a cooler vintage, with a delicate fruit and an elegant structure. Winemaking: The fruit parcels of fruit were fermented in 2000L vats with a small proportion of whole bunch use, given the cooler year. Maceration for approximately two-three weeks, with gentle pump- overs used twice daily for cap management. The wine was matured in French oak (25% new) for 10 months before blending. 120 dozen produced. 196 bottles for the UK. Review by Tony Love at Winepilot 2025 SA Wine Guide "From estate blocks where longer ripening occurs, enhancing the varietal aromatics which sit a little deeper in the wine - take your time to reveal what appears to be a terroir note of alpine herbs and florals. Drink now - 2032" 94/100 Points "The 2023 were such a protracted vintage - something more of the 80s than most these days being warmer and earlier. A new cuvée here from Basket Range - a juicy, fruity, delicious chillable red blend. From Sholto Broderick at Basket Range Wines: This wine is comprised predominately of Merlot and Petit Verdot from our vineyard. These were macerated with the use of whole bunches and with gentle handling, which gives lifted fruit and a spice from the stalks. The components were then blended with small amount of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. This makes for a red wine with gentle tannin and a lifted mid-palate. The Bantam is a dynamic wine that showcases juicy soft plums, white pepper, and graphitic tannin, with a savoury, highly drinkable quality. Designed for earlier drinking, it's best served cooler, at about 12c.

Here’s something you don’t come across everyday…a Nebbiolo/Cabernet blend that is fermented and aged in concrete egg. The choice of fermentation vessel aids circulation during teh ferment which imparts depth, volume and texture to the resultant wine. This fabulous wine not only has a cool, egg-shaped label, but drinks beautifully, showing bright acidity and a lovely balance between sweet blackcurrant fruit and something altogether more savoury and herbal. The finish is clean and multi-layered. It has a purity of fruit that allows the drinker to experience the flavours of BNebbiolo without the normal oak influence tasted in Piemontese versions.
