First planted in 1860, the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard has been in the Henschke family since 1891, with Cyril Henschke producing its first single-vineyard Shiraz in 1958. Planted at 400 metres above sea level, this 4-hectare vineyard is named after the Gnandenberg Lutheran Church opposite (‘Gnadenberg’ translates to ‘Hill of Grace’ in German). The site’s original ‘Ancestors’ vines are now approximately 160 years old and remain at the heart of the ‘Hill of Grace’ vineyard, alongside a small selection of ungrafted ‘Centenarians’ (vines over 100 years old), ‘Survivors’ (vines over 70 years old) and ‘Old Vines’ (over 35 years old). Today, those original vines are bolstered with its 'young' 100+ and 35+yo kinfolk and aged in 83/17% French/American oak hogsheads (29% new) for 18 months. Callum Powell has learnt from the best when it comes to Syrah. He practically grew up in the cellars at Torbreck, the Barossa winery his father co-founded, watching it grow from the modest start up in a small shed to the international power house of today. He spent a year at Jean-Louis Chave in the Northern Rhone, one of THE top producers of Hermitage and St Joseph, learning more about his craft. His recent project with his father named Powell & Son sought out the best vineyards in Barossa and Eden and experimented with natural winemaking and indigenous yeasts, and gained him much international attention. Callum now brings his knowledge and natural instinct to his own wines. Sourcing fruit from his family's vineyards as well as the famous Hoffmann sites, Callum is quickly stepping out of his father’s shadow and making a name for himself. His time in Hermitage and the many hours working the perilously steep slopes of the vineyards continues to influence him today. His wines are both named after the towns from which the fruit is sourced, recalling the site specific way of naming wines in Hermitage. The Bantam is a dynamic wine that showcases juicy soft plums, white pepper, and graphitic tannin, with a savoury, highly drinkable quality. The philosophy here is to use top quality fruit that is produced by intensive, hands on work in the vineyard and minimal use of chemicals. The wines are then fermented using wild yeasts and minimal intervention to allow them to express the character of their individual sites. The vineyard is planted to approximately 50% Pinot Noir, over different aspects and soil types. This wine comes from vines planted on the south and southeast facing blocks and is a combination of MV6 and 777 clones. This block has a cooler, more protected aspect, enabling extended ripening flavour and tannin. This wine reflects a cooler vintage, with a delicate fruit and an elegant structure. Winemaking: The fruit parcels of fruit were fermented in 2000L vats with a small proportion of whole bunch use, given the cooler year. Maceration for approximately two-three weeks, with gentle pump- overs used twice daily for cap management. The wine was matured in French oak (25% new) for 10 months before blending. 120 dozen produced. 196 bottles for the UK. I feel the 2022 vintage release is the best job of it I have made so far. Only 230 dozen produced. Delicious, delicate and ethereal, herbaceous with wet-earth notes, brimming with red candy and sour cherry on the back palate. Serve lightly chilled with felafel, zatar, or spiced meats! Gorgeous wine. Mostly estate fruit from the Broderick's vineyard with a quarter from a nearby Balhannah source..Each parcel of fruit for this wine was fermented in 1500 and 2000L vats, with the sparing use of whole bunches, in what was a cooler year. Maceration ranged from 7-14 days, depending on the parcel, with daily gentle pump-overs for cap management. The wine was maturated in seasoned French barrique barrels for 8 months. The earlier-picked fruit, showing prettiness and tension, underwent a gentle fermentation process. This Pinot Noir showcases notes of bramble and forest floor, with a delicate, fine-tea like tannin structure that adds to its overall elegance and complexity. "Designed as a lighter, approachable and easy pouring Pinot, it has an alpine herbal/mint note to its fragrance, bush florals, with lighter cherry flavours, lighter tannin vibes with a subtle alpine herb/amaro note to finish. Here’s something you don’t come across everyday…a Nebbiolo/Cabernet blend that is fermented and aged in concrete egg. The choice of fermentation vessel aids circulation during teh ferment which imparts depth, volume and texture to the resultant wine. This fabulous wine not only has a cool, egg-shaped label, but drinks beautifully, showing bright acidity and a lovely balance between sweet blackcurrant fruit and something altogether more savoury and herbal. The finish is clean and multi-layered. It has a purity of fruit that allows the drinker to experience the flavours of BNebbiolo without the normal oak influence tasted in Piemontese versions.

The 100+ year old vines of the Barossa Valley deliver Rhône-style wines of unparalleled concentration and freshness. Cuvée Juveniles was created as a ‘Cotes Du Rhone’ inspired bistro wine from classic Barossa varieties of Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre). Alongside these Barossa cornerstones, Torbreck has planted two other traditional Rhone varieties: Counoise and Carignan. These give savoury and spicy notes, and add a level of complexity. An absolutely pitch-perfect old vine Grenache from McLaren Vale from the top team at Thistledown. Beautiful, lifted and perfumed fruit with some high-toned herbal notes from the inclusion of 30% whole-bunch. On the palate this little Devil shows utter, glorious drinkability that comes from serious, but hands off - with nothing forced - top, top winemaking. The wine has the characteristic McLaren Vale perfume and spice with a beguiling texture and perfume that unfolds, layer by layer. This delicately hued red is very elegant with vibrant wild strawberry, spice and silky texture. Outstanding. An utter bargain and a dream of a drink. 10/10.
