An immensely calm and composed Kabinett of crushed minerals and glorious sunny yellow fruits that fans out across the palate in a veritable slick of seamlessly fused fruit and minerals. Lithe and charming but also regal in length - Thomas Haag really showing off the qualities of this noble vineyard. Justerini & Brooks. A cheesy fermentative residue somewhat clouds the nose, but from behind that emerge scents of fresh apple and sea breeze, anticipating the salinity, juiciness and crispness that dominate on a (for a Wehlener) surprisingly firm, lean palate. A garlanding of heliotrope and honeysuckle also runs through this entire performance, which culminates in bright, mouthwatering length. To an especially remarkable extent – though this is basically true of all the vintage 2017 Schloss Lieser Kabinetts – high residual sugar is successfully balanced out by efficacious acidity and extract. This will almost certainly be even finer in the future. Vinous.

Family Hasselbach of the Gunderloch Estate own around 4.5 hectares of this prime vineyard made up predominantly of very steep parcels. It yields wines of striking mineral character paired with a broad spectrum of expressive spice and fruit aromas.

Water-white. Very introvert nose. Still extremely youthful but with hints of a complex cocktail of passion fruit and minerals to come. Grainy texture on the finish. This is a baby! Super-clean finish. 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson MW

The bouquet here is first and foremost slate-led as wisps of fine smoke, spontaneous fermentation and herbs suggest an altogether brittle and crispy palate to come. In the end though, there is sufficient depth and sweetness, not to mention a deliciously spicy component which brings an array of stone fruits and earth-bound sensations all together to a very long, grippy finish. A Spätlese with high levels of ripeness, freshness and a certain austerity – this is high definition stuff! Justerini & Brooks. Temporarily cheesy, reductive aromatic overtones on the nose thankfully do little to spoil the delight in emerging scents of apple and pink grapefruit wreathed in honeysuckle and heliotrope. Satiny in feel and possessed of generous primary juiciness, this finishes with soothing persistence, its sweetness obvious but supportive and an appropriate undertone of wet stone perceptible even through such rich fruitiness. The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a sensitive, sublime, complex, exquisite and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and delicate expression of stewed apricots and some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet refined and savoury palate, with coolish apricot flavours on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr. This is a great pleasure to drink, but you can easily keep this Kabinett for over three decades. 8% stated alcohol. A juicy, approachable, salty-citrus leaning fruit forward mini-GG that sings with easy, crisp clear fruit. Great flavour development and deep length. A lovely acid balance renders this fresh but not crispy. Justerini & Brooks.

Max Von Kunow represents a new generation ? and an exhilarating new force in Germany’s Saar region. Expect delicate floral notes with hints of blackcurrant and lovely freshness and with the concentration of this fine vintage.

Pale yellow colour. Expressive Riesling nose typical from limestone origin: citrus, light mineral notes, stony flavours, honey. Vivacious palate, crisp, amazing acidity and freshness. This is a very classic Roche Calcaire that finishes bone dry with a lacy texture. This wine will still need some time to open up and it is highly recommended to decant it in the first years after bottling.

Vinous: A lovely nose of fresh apple garlanded in apple blossom and honeysuckle is followed by a silken, delicate, generously juicy palate in which the fruit is adeptly supported by discreet sweetness. The floral perfume continues inner-mouth for a delectably billowing effect, and the lusciously long finish features a sense of transparency to wet stone and tinglingly gingery nuances that were missing from the dry wines of the present collection. An ancient former monastic wine estate on the famous Maximin Grünhaus hill in the Ruwer, where wine has been made for 2000 years or so. Three of the region’s top vineyards, for which von Schubert are world-famous, sit on this hill: Herrenberg; Bruderberg; Abstberg. Von Schubert's wines are taut, mineral, deft and delightful - perfect classics of their style.

An unusual, but terrific, blend showing off Alsace's grape varieties in a supergroup line up. An exquisite ripe-flavoured riesling. Notes of peach and yellow plum, formidable delicacy and superb length of flavour from this fine estate in the Saar.

Rolly-Gassmann is a domaine like no other and has a unique style. It is located at Rorschwihr, a sleepy village on the northern rim of Haut-Rhin. The vineyards are located in Rorschwihr and the neighbouring Rodern and Bergheim. The wines are small masterpieces with very good definition. They all carry the signature of Rolly-Gassmann, a certain shameless, velvety sweetness. The fruit is rich and manages to balance the fruit with a vibrant acidity to form wines that melt on the palate.

A Perfect example of Mid-Mosel dry Riesling - but without the alcohol, delicate white peach fruit, cool slate mineral. Pale, deft and zesty and enticing.

The Mülheimer Sonnenlay is the largest single Richter vineyard and the source of the world-renowned “Zeppelin” Riesling. The vineyard sits on the west-southwestern side of a slate stone hill south of Mülheim, a dry riverbed formed during the last ice age 250,000 years ago. The name of the vineyard– Sonne (sunshine) and lay (slate stone) –perfectly describes the characteristics of the site. This often extremely steep vineyard has a loose slate stone soil structure that is enriched by pebbles, loam and sand deposited by the ancient river. This kind of soil creates wines that combine typical slate stone mineral character with animated and elegant fruitiness. Grapes from the hillside are also used to produce Richter’s single vineyard, singlevintage sparkling brut wine. Wines from the Mülheimer Sonnenlay were served on the luxurious Zeppelin airships -including the Hindenburg – in the 1920s and 30s. Local growers, proud of this distinction, commissioned Bauhaus artist Hans Schlösser to design a label for the wine incorporating the iconic Zeppelin airship. The label is still featured today.

Flint stone and ripe grapefruit notes. A classy, elegant and well balanced Spätlese.

Some citrus, pear and white flowers perfumes develop on the nose. The rich aromas continue through the mid-palate. A long lasting wine, with a refreshing finish. Very versatile wine for a range of fish, chicken and salad dishes.

The Schoenenbourg Grand Cru dominates Riquewihr, the village next to Hunawihr. This marl-limestone and gypsum hillside favours Riesling. Very fruity; stone fruit, peach, and apricot forward. 8-10g/l RS. Persistent. Soft.

This monopole is a southwest-facing vineyard slope of just two acres. The vineyard was planted in 1964, but the first historic record dates back to 30th April 1245! The vineyard was dedicated by the Count of Veldenz to the nearby convent from which it took its name “Helenenkloster” (St. Helene’s convent.) It offers a rather aromatic nose made of vineyard peach, apricot blossom and fine spicy elements. The wine is subtly creamy yet also beautifully light-footed on the palate and leaves a direct feel of herbs, fruits and spices in the animating and persistent finish. Flavours of apricot add a touch of weight to the aftertaste.

Fresh, delicately fragrant nose with nuances of apple blossom; a juicy wine with a clear mineral texture. Excellent balance between aromatic fruit sweetness and racy fruit sweetness. The Mülheimer Sonnenlay is located on the former Rundeberg of the Mosel, south of Mülheim. The name Sonnenlay is a combination of Sonne and Lay, the Mosel-Franconian word for slate. This would already narrow down the main characteristics of this vineyard; Located in a western orientation, the vineyards, some of which are extremely steep, have a skeletal slate soil that is enriched with sand, stones and clay due to the former course of the Moselle river. This soil combines typical slate minerality with elegant fruit.
