The vines, planted in 1945, delve deep and create a concentrated wine with an incredible inky black colour. Maranges is slightly off the beaten track but a really interesting source of fleshy, rich red Burgundy that look better and better value as prices rise for better known villages. Bachey-Legros makes one of the very best examples in the Maranges appellation from the single 'Le Goty' vineyard . "Slightly purple. Savoury and plump. Quite spicy on the nose. Some notes of stems. Fairly grippy tannin. Savoury and expressive. Redcurrant acidity on the palate." We have been working with the Legros brothers Sam and Lenaic since, well, for as long as we can remember, at least 25 years. Their vines are very old and seem to enjoy life on the upper slopes of Santenay and Maranges, protected from the worst excesses of the climate by limestone cliffs and woodland. They harvest late to offer ripeness and richness, a hedonistic style that is irresistible to us and many customers.

Utterly charming and gluggable Beaujolais, brimming with raspberry flavour, with smooth tannins and bright acidity. You can chill this a little or just knock it back with some charcuterie, cheese or olives.

The combination of red fruits and florality give this wine immediate presence. The 'Champ Ladoy' uses two tiny parcels in Mercurey with 12 months in oak, 30% new. There's a smoky character that develops in the glass but it's still quite youthful, mineral, with a light, elegant mouthfeel.

Nice crunchy nose of fruit, mouth to match in a fairly powerful register. It corresponds to what one expects from a good Savigny, fruity, earthy and frank. Allen Meadows; ‘the quality of these wines is nothing short of phenomenal compared to the usual quality of the respective appellations’. Claude Marechal makes his wines as naturally as possible, taking his inspiration from his late friend Henri Jayer who he trained with early in his career. In common with Jayer he makes wines above and beyond the expectations of his terroirs. His wines are pure and sleek with vibrant fruit and great potential to age. These wines are available in very limited quantities but are something you should definitely have in your cellar.In the vineyard ripeness is the watchword and the vines are maintained in order to maximise phenolic maturity every vintage whatever the conditions. No chemical fertilisers are used and the harvest is hand picked each vintage, Claude says he is usually the last in each appellation to pick which shows on the ripe fruited nature of his wines. After harvest the bunches are sorted by hand and gently de-stemmed before vinification using natural yeasts. The fermenting must is pumped over twice daily and once alcoholic fermentation is finished the wines are placed into oak barrels where they mature for between 10 and 15 months.

Very true to the terroir that gave its name to the village of Pernand-Vergelesses with this intense ruby wine, fragrant with notes of red fruit and undergrowth, full-bodied, round, and generous on the palate, supported by pleasant, smooth, and velvety tannins, with a lovely hint of licorice on the finish. As always, this is a vin de plaisir and a vin de soif. The new vintage is full of bright red fruit, with very appealing, pure Pinot aromas. The palate is sapid, fresh and clean as a whistle. The chalky, south-facing vineyard is a splendid advert for the value and pleasure to be found now in the Hautes-Côtes.

Packed full of wild strawberry fruit with hints of raspberry, the palate adds a touch of spice to the sweet fruit and even a touch of coffee. This is a lovely approachable wine. Alain Gras is the reference point for St-Romain. This extremely steep village was considered part of the Hautes Côtes de Beaune until 1947. The vineyards are set back from the main Côte and mostly at higher elevation and have unquestionably improved in quality by the changes in climate and no longer struggle to reach full physiological maturity. The domaine covers 12 hectares with 8ha being planted with Chardonnay and 4ha to Pinot Noir. There are 42 separate parcels but Alain prefers to blend the grapes into one cuvée.

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune, Vieilles Vignes is made from 50- to 85-year-old vines, giving sweet and gravelly tannins, generous fruit and a spicy, floral undertone. The Carrés protected the vineyard with candles to raise the temperature and ward off the frost. As a result, there is a decent-sized crop of this excellent Savigny which will offer delicious short- and medium-term drinking.
