Champagne Pierre Bertrand 1er Cru Brut NV Dom. des Soulanes Vielles Vignes Blanc 2023 Cotes Catalanes Basket Range Estate Pinot Noir 2023 Adelaide Hills, Australia Champagne Pierre Bertrand 1er Cru Brut NV £32 came first in a Decanter tasting of over 100 Grower Champagnes in June 2018, with a score of 98 and an Exceptional rating. We have been importing it into the UK for 12 years and we always knew it was great, now some of the top wine critics agree with us, unanimously. A premium cuvee made exclusively from the premier cru villages of Cumieres and Hautvillers. These are warm sites, with south-facing vineyard s well-exposed to the sun, and for this cuvee Bertrand blends the three main Champagne grape varieties in equal proportions. It's aged for six years in the cellars before release, which is unusually long for a grower estate, and this long ageing on the lees contributes to the wine's complexity and finesse. Montee des Autrichiens Gamay VSIG 2023 Dom. Gerard 17.5/20 £22.99 Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 100% Gamay (planted in the mid 1980s and now grubbed up), from galet stone on red-brown clay soils at 350 m at Givors. 50% destemmed, 50% whole bunch, 15–16-day vinification, a little pumping over, then cap punching, aged in one- to six-year-old 228-litre casks for 12 months. Unfined. 2023 is the very last vintage produced of this unique Rhône take on Gamay. There is something unavoidably poignant about drinking wine made from a vineyard that no longer exists, from someone’s crazy idea of planting Gamay in the Rhône which then had to be grubbed up at the ripe old age of 40-odd for financial and logistical reasons. This is a sip of quirky history and for that alone it is to be savoured and treasured. But not for that alone. The wine is gorgeous. I’m not sure I would have guessed Gamay if I hadn’t known. Gamay with a Grenache accent? The fruit is bauble round and late-summer ripe. Rose hips, red plums, raspberry tea and freckled with pepper. Kicking can-can tannins doubling down on the pepper. A violet and a sprig of thyme tucked into the envelope before posting. It’s fluvial with elegance. Oh, this really is a wine to lay your hands on before it’s all gone. (TC) Basket Range Wine Estate Pinot Noir 2023 Adelaide Hills £29.99 17/20 jancisrobinson.com "Pinot clones MV6 and 777 from a cooler south-facing site. Fermented in 2,000-litre vats with a small proportion of whole bunch. Maceration for approximately two to three weeks, with gentle pumpovers twice daily for cap management. Aged in French oak (25% new) for 10 months before blending. Violet-fragrant dark-berry fruit with sweet tang. A very gentle wine. Traces of oak that, like foraging for mushrooms, you only spot when you know what you’re looking for and once you’ve seen one, they all start popping up in the understory. Tannins that breathe in and out like a creature in deep, contented sleep. (TC)"

Outstanding Riesling that is several steps ahead of any other regular/basic house Riesling. Citrus, grapefruit, hints of honey and minerals. Riesling Niederosterreich 2022 Funkstille, Austria White peach, apricot compôte and plentiful floral notes add to the juicy texture, and lovely acidity balanced with a hint of residual sugar. Austria may not be as famous for Riesling as Germany or Alsace, but it should be!

Pinot Noir - the classic grape of Burgundy. It's not only the place it shines but it's the place that most growers want to measure their wines against and we start this selection with a terrific wine from the famed Cotes de Nuits village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Remi Jeanniard is a 5th generation vigneron who has 20 acres of prime land, including Grand Cru Clos de la Roche, 1er Cru and village wines in Morey, Chambolle and Gevrey. He's a class act as his old vine Morey 2024 attests. We've matched it up with another non-Burgundian Pinot Noir, Danbury Ridge, from a bit closer to home. As in being from Essex, England.
