Patrick Javillier
From the Puligny side of the generic land, which was frosted, but not heavily, this carries 35 percent new oak and has a defined, clear Puligny style, with tight fruit and a kernel of nuttiness. Neatly made, it has substance for a Bourgogne Blanc – indeed, it’s as good as a village Puligny at other addresses.

Vincent Girardin
The Bourgogne Blanc 'Terroir Noble' comes from vines all situated in the communes of Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault. Lovely and fresh with aromas of ripe lemon, apple and pear with a floral hint. Rich with stone fruits, melted butter and a creamy richness that linger on the finish. There’s lots of freshness and minerality. An exceptional value-to-quality Bourgogne Blanc from one of the great estates in Burgundy.

Domaine Bachey-Legros
Outstanding Santenay Blanc from the growers with the oldest vines in the appellation. "Complex aromas. Supple on the palate, with distinct and juicy fruit - melon and white peach. Then that bold oak and creamy toastiness. Good texture."

Domaine Billard Pere et Fils
Jérôme and Elisabeth Billard are the 4th generation of his family to have managed Domaine Billard Pere & Fils. Their winery is located in La Rochepot, a village just west of Saint-Aubin. Jérôme has built up the estate's vineyard holdings to an impressive 18.5 hectares, with the largest area in Hautes Cotes de Beaune, as well as Beaune, St Romain, St Aubin, Auxey Duresses and Pommard. Jérôme’s philosophy is "expressing the typicity of the terroir.". Yields are low and grapes are concentrated because of organic farming techniques, extensive pruning and cover crops between vines. His trusty Percheron steed, Raphael, ploughs the vineyards at the estate and for Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted on a vibrating table to ensure only the best are selected. Winemaking is low intervention. Pinot Noir is foot trodden to gently extract tannins, only natural yeasts are used and wines are left on lees in oak barrels before bottling at the estate. As a consequence of these meticulous efforts, Billard offers high quality wines with layers of complexity and concentration at surprisingly low prices. The Hautes Cotes de Beaune White comes from a single 3 hectare vineyard called La Justice which is found next to Saint Aubin on a sunny, chalky hillside with good drainage. Perfumed and floral with nice peach notes. Citrus, peach, and oaky and vanilla flavours with some white pepper. Nice acidity and length.

Good value Burgundy is getting increasingly hard to find, so I suggest you look at some of the lesser-known villages such as Auxey Duresses which is only a mile or so from Meursault. The whites it produces tend to be great value; smooth and stylish, in the Meursault mould. The nose shows aromas of yellow blossom with toasted hazelnuts, almonds, ripe citrus and hawthorn. The palate is rich, structured and dazzling with purity and freshness. A beautifully balanced and delicious Burgundy!

Rollin Pere & Fils
"The nose is not quite as extrovert as the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, and the fruit is whiter on the palate. Certainly ripe, a touch of liquorice, some warmth, but this works and has kept some Pernand-Vergelesses. Stocky but well made." Jasper Morris MW Domaine Rollin Père et Fils works 14 hectares of vines in five different communes in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. The domaine, situated in Pernand-Vergelesses (a village behind the Hill of Corton), was founded in 1955 by Maurice Rollin, but it was his father who had started to assemble parcels of vines from which he produced his own wine outside work hours (like his father, he was employed as a vineyard worker by another winery in the village). Rémi, Maurice's son, has now been joined by his own son, Simon.

Domaine Olivier Leflaive
There’s a modest shift in this year’s blend: the domaine now manages two vineyards; and five domaine-owned sites make up the balance. The proportion of new oak (15%) is unchanged, as is the wine’s ability to punch above its weight. The fruit has a Puligny-style bite, with the clever use of the lees adding a creamy sidenote.

Greywacke
A seductive combination of white nectarine, pink grapefruit and candied orange rind mingles with the more savoury aromas of roasted chestnuts and hot buttered brioche – an elaborate concoction infused with linseed and woodsmoke. The savouriness carries through onto a wonderfully dry palate that has great texture and concentration, with distinct flintiness, tight structure and terrific ageing potential.

MATTHEW JUKES, JANUARY 2022, SCORE: 17.5 With nice balance and a forward feel, this is a slightly more refined version than the Bourgogne Blanc VV, and it is very much built along the same lines. Not too ebullient and retaining a degree of restraint, this is a lovely, elegant and forward-drinking wine.

Red Claw
Citrus and stone fruit steal the show with the subtlest of oak spice adding complexity. Think Chablis-like flintiness but with a tantalising hint of New World exoticism. We are deep within crystalline-loveliness territory with Tom's Red Claw Chardonnay. Think crispness and purity. unalloyed, palate-enlivening, gastronomic joy. It is, indubitably, a winner.

Chapel Down
From an exceptional south-facing single vineyard set high on the North Downs. Without question the best still English wine I have tasted. It’s mouth-fillingly fine with rounded, supple peach-like fruit and an ever so slightly toasty, vanilla finish thanks to nine months in French oak. If you like serious white Burgundy or Chablis, you’ll love this.

Armand Heitz
Region-level wines from top producers have become the best source of value in Burgundy. This bottling from Armand Heitz is case in point. Rich and toasty, yet fresh and mineral-driven, this is classic White Burgundy that you can treat as an everyday wine. Tastes like: Ripe peach, toasted bread, vanilla, smoke. How to drink: Chilled, but not cold, alongside roast chicken or seafood in cream sauce.

Chateau Rives-Blanques
This is the thoroughbred of the Rives-Blanques stable, and the favourite at the sommelier’s table. La Trilogie is a very special limited-edition blend of the best barrels of handpicked chardonnay, chenin blanc and mauzac from their top fields.

Doamine Talmard
The cheerful wines of the Mâconnais befit the sunny disposition of its gentle slopes, its warm terracotta rooftiles and the rhythmic chirping of cicadas on summer evenings. This is an excellent entry-point to white Burgundy: soft and rounded Chardonnay showing green apple, lemon oil and almond notes. Unoaked to let the purity of the fruit shine through. This has a strong affinity with roast chicken and turkey.

Au Bon Climat
Long-established star winery of Santa Barbara. Creamy vanilla, rich but all in balance. Impressive. Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is a beautiful example of the Au Bon Climat style. The flinty, stony aromas stand out while in the background is a hard spice note from “sur lie” barrel aging. There are notes of lemon-lime and soft vanilla.

Au Bon Climat
From one of California’s top-rated vineyards, this outstanding Chardonnay displays fleshy brioche and ripe citrus flavours. Made in more of a Burgundian style rather than the big, rich, overly oaked examples that are becoming past fashionable. Beautifully constructed, fresh pear and white peach scents are sharpened by citrus notes. Great food wine, chicken or creamy cheeses pair especially well.

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon has the deepest and coldest cellars in Burgundy and they nurture some of the greatest dry white wines of Burgundy. Dominique Lafon has been in charge since 1985, taking over a domaine which already had a reputation for outstanding, if irregular whites, and potentially good reds. When Lafon took over the domaine, most of his vineyards were leased out on a share-cropping basis. It was only towards the end of the 80s that he managed to reclaim all the vineyards and thus have full responsibility for them. The white wines are now consistently among the best in Burgundy while since 1989 the reds have reached the top division. The domaine is now cultivated according to biodynamic principles with no use of herbicides or chemical sprays. All the wines are barrel-fermented, using new oak for the 1er Crus upwards. This is the very pinnacle of White Burgundy with superlative fruit, power, complexity and total harmony being the wines' hallmarks. In September 1999 the Lafons bought a domaine in the Maconnais at Milly Lamartine, sold under the label of Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon. Further vineyards have been bought subsequently, and from 2009 there is a contract in place to farm the vineyards of the Chateau de Viré. This wasn’t produced in 2019 due to frost; the surviving grapes were declassified to Mâcon-Villages. There was no lasting damage, and it’s a real success in ’20. This spot ripens early, so the grapes are picked at the start of harvest. Made in oak foudre, this is fruity and charming with crisp peach fruit and a zesty finish.

Olivier Leflaive
The name Leflaive carries an expectation with it to produce the best wines possible and cousin of the famed Anne-Claude in which Olivier co-owned Domaine Leflaive with does not disappoint on his own range of wines. Saint Romain, Its exposure towards South-East and its limestone stony soil give a wine of personality mixing rich but subtle aromas. This cuvée is vinified from three distinct plots of different ages. A lively wine with saline minerality and a richness from the oak aging (20% new). Very elegant. Ideal with pâtés, terrines and potted meat. In a sunny vintage like 2020, the high-lying Sous le Chateau vineyard in Saint Romain is a great source for wine showing fruit intensity with balancing freshness. 2020 has given 65% of a normal production, the colour being pale golden-lemon, aromas floral, fresh and delicate. In taste, this shows broad fruit with creamy texture, vigorous length and silky aftertaste

Benjamin Leroux
In this cuvée, Benjamin masterfully blends fruit from mostly Meursault, with some higher altitude chardonnay from the hills above Beaune which adds precision and finesse to this Bourgogne Blanc of unbeatable value. Large, old oak fermenting vessels and lees ageing help keep this wine remarkably fresh and elegant.

Jean-Paul Brun
Jean Paul Brun is known throughout Beaujolais as the original ‘farmer’ of the region. He has always practiced organically though doesn’t bother himself with the bureaucracy of the paperwork. The ‘terres dorees’ on which he grows his vines is a truly beautiful part of the region, and literally translates to the ‘golden lands’. This golden beauty is fully translated into his Beaujolais blanc. Dry and elegant, with lovely intense ripe fruit with citrus flavours. Pure, juicy and succulent. Real class. 100% unoaked Chardonnay from top sites in the Maconnais. Beaujolais like you've never tried before!

Domaine Olivier Leflaive
Meursault Village "Meix Chavaux" Domaine 2020 reveals a strong character. It is a slightly tense wine with excellent acidity. Full of energy, this wine is well-balanced. Meursault Village "Meix Chavaux" Domaine 2018 stems from a 10-hectare production area grown in an organic manner (non-certified) and located between 240 and 260 meters above sea level around the village of Meursault. The north-facing, fairly stony clay-limestone terroir is home to vines planted in 1991.

Domaine de la Croix Senaillet
Saint Veran Domaine de la Croix Senaillet is a truly magnificent example of Maconnais Chardonnay from one of the area’s leading producers. It is a fleshy wine with vibrant lemon notes, apple and floral aromas all would round a fresh mineral finish. It’s posh enough for special occasions but affordable enough for Wednesday nights. Since the early 1990’s, brothers Richard and Stéphane Martin have been farming this Domaine along strict organic principals. They have grown their holdings from 6 to 25 hectares in that time with the majority in the Davaye commune. Their wines offer tremendous value from a region that is seeing prices escalate. Their attention to detail and quality is quite something to behold and really shines through in their wines.
