Felsina
A masterpiece of subtlety, and class, and poise. I hope I don't sound like a wine snob by saying I guess you need to have enjoyed the Greats of white wine such as Grand Cru Chablis to 'get' where this fits in. They could easily have made a blockbuster Chard, or an oaky beast, but this is fine, so fine. Smells like crushed marble and distant pine trees. Not cheap, admittedly, but treat yourself to a glass a night over four or five days (it opens up remarkably). I've always been a fan and rated them the best of 15 Tuscan estates I visited back in 2000. Parker: 91 pts. 'The Fèlsina 2017 Chardonnay I Sistri is a medium-bodied white wine with equal parts exotic fruit, toast and spice. The oak-driven notes here resemble pastry crust and sweet custard cream. This is a very well-executed and finely crafted wine with balanced thickness, acidity and fruitiness that ultimately find harmony in the glass. Serve it with some Florentine gnudi: spinach and ricotta balls.'

Stephane Aladame
Despite the fact that the name 'Les Maroques' is derived from the ancient French 'marais', which means 'swamp', this east facing single parcel of Montagny 1er Cru is situated at 300 to 330 metres altitude. The vines are aged between 20 and 58 years old and are planted on well-hydrated clay-limestone soils, resulting in wines characterised by a marked minerality. The 3.5 hectares plot has been farmed organically since the early 2000s. Made from 100% Chardonnay the fruit was hand picked, whole bunch pressed, and the must was allowed to settle before fermentation with indigenous yeasts took place in 100% old French oak barrels. The must underwent full malolactic fermentation and the wine was matured for 12 months before bottling. Stéphane Aladame's 'Les Maroques' Montagny 1er Cru reveals pure and refined hints of fresh white peach, together with delicate floral and citrus notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine has a delicate structure with marked mineral undertones and a lingering finish.

Domaine Sylvain Dussort
This 'baby Meursault' is derived from two small, advantageously positioned parcels of old vines just outside the village of Meursault. The 2018 is an excellent vintage that offers immense concentration and a more forward expression in the glass. It boasts opulent, rich qualities and focused minerality that mirror what we love in the wines of the appellation. The vineyards of 35 to 60-year-old vines lie just outside the AOC border of Meursault, which dramatically lowers the price while allowing for one of the greatest White Burgundy values we have. This wine is ready to drink now and doesn’t need aging. Zesty, bitter citrus, lemon, and grapefruit characters, with a biscuity, yeasty character all held together by a spicy acidity, and a lean mineral salinity. Serious integration, sheer quality.

Leaner, more austere on the nose. Very lively on the palate, almost sweet caramelised edge, high acid, good brightness. Very ripe, round, and unctuous. Vanillin finish. Tarte tatin. A bit much at the moment. Puppy fat. Lovely length though. Still plenty of opportunity.

Rollin Pere & Fils
The Rollins have 1.5 hectares in Les Cloux, a particularly well-sited vineyard located to the north of the hill of Corton, facing southeast and high on a steep slope. This sees around 20% new oak, with a third in larger barrels and the rest in standard 228-litre. The attack is generous and ripe, and there is a pleasing spice to accompany the stone-fruit. More opulent than the regular bottling, but still with the same saline, sizzling finish that is the hallmark of Pernand.

Danbury Ridge
Something of Pouilly-Fuisse in the style here, a banana-custard rich nose, but on the palate linear, mineral and refined. Elegant, broad and complex, so unlike other English chardonay. Super-premium estate sited in the warmest, driest corner of England, near the coast and Malden (of posh salt fame). This south-facing ridge enjoys an exceptionally long warm growing season - so rare in England. Our old friend John Atkinson, Master of Wine, who is an expert on cool-climate viticulture, is enthusiastically involved. Winemaker is Liam Idzikowski who boasts long experience in English wine-making; backed by owners the Bunker family, the winery is an astonishing no-expense-spared jewel in the crown for English wine.

Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet
This is a wonderfully positioned vineyard for a simple village wine, nestling under the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bachelets’ parcel also touches Chassagne’s Les Encegnières. The fruit is rich and luscious, around a very mineral and compact core. A very fine example at this level. Drink 2022-2025. Jean-Claude Bachelet used to sell the majority of his crop to négociants, but nowadays the estate bottles virtually all of its wines and is considered one of the most conscientious wine producers in St Aubin. After moving to superb new cellars in the hamlet of Gamay, next to St Aubin, Benoît and Jean-Baptiste Bachelet have taken over from their father Jean-Claude (who died in 2019). The basic principle of a long, slow barrel-ageing for almost two years remains in force, while the state-of-the-art winery has improved consistency. In the vineyard, the brothers have been experimenting with biodynamic viticulture and have plans to extend this across their holdings in St Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The Bachelet wines are exceptionally well balanced, with understated character and good medium-term ageing

Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet
"Aromas of spiced pear, white flowers and honeycomb preface the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles, a medium to full-bodied, bright and lively wine that's one of the more introverted in the range, revealing promising depth at the core and concluding with a chalky finish." William Kelley,Wine Advocate, January 2021. 91 pts Jean-Claude Bachelet used to sell the majority of his crop to négociants, but nowadays the estate bottles virtually all of its wines and is considered one of the most conscientious wine producers in St Aubin. Meerlust
Very bright, polished platinum with green, vivacious hue. Complex, appealing nose with quince, citrus and floral notes developing into lemon cream, oatmeal and marzipan richness. On the palate the wine is full bodied and generous, but still balanced by crisp acidity. There is ripe tropical fruit and creaminess balanced by a pure minerality typical of the variety. The wine has a long, very pleasant lingering finish indicating the richness and persistence of the vintage.

Patrick Javillier
For many years, Patrick has isolated his generic vineyards that sit on limestone for this cuvée. From these 0.75 hectares, the domaine produces an unusually complex Bourgogne Blanc, in the mould of a Puligny-Montrachet. The nose is expressive, elegant and powerful with notes of white and yellow fruits, succulent flowers and touches of toast. On the palate, the wine displays fine balance and a lovely body with crisp acidity. The same aromas are found as on the nose. This is an expressive and fresh wine with a long finish.

Au Bon Climat
Long-established star winery of Santa Barbara. Creamy vanilla, rich but all in balance. Impressive. Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is a beautiful example of the Au Bon Climat style. The flinty, stony aromas stand out while in the background is a hard spice note from “sur lie” barrel aging. There are notes of lemon-lime and soft vanilla.

Au Bon Climat
"The 2017 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from a Grand Cru site in the Santa Maria Valley and was fermented and aged 18 months in 50% new French oak. This Burgundian beauty gives up lots of caramelized citrus, toasted bread, and spice-driven aromatics and shows medium-bodied richness on the palate, with bright acidity and some classic Santa Maria salinity and seaside-like nuances. You can drink bottles today, yet they'll also keep for over a decade." Jeb Dunnock 94pts
