This is one of my favourite Haut Medoc wines, made from a plot next to the wondrous Chateau Giscours in Margaux and by the same team. Sensuous, rich, exotic and ripe.61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, 12 months in French oak.Ready to drink as it was such a great vintage.

Big, rich and velvety like a decent Margaux should be with a modern glossy feel on the palate. Designed for earlier drinking as a second wine, with extended barrel ageing. Delicious fruit, ample weight and body, ripe tannins.

First-growth intensity on the nose. Very sweet – maybe not quite the freshness of some vintages – but definitely first growth in terms of build. Great stuff! Pure pleasure. 94/100 Decanter "Nose of mocha, cocoa beans, and smoky elements with graphite and a perfume of blackcurrant bud emerging after aeration. The palate reveals a peppery note and a mouthfeel that is dense and structured with fine tannins, yet it seems more elegant than the nose, especially on the fine-boned, close-knit finish. A rather singular expression of Pichon Baron."

Pineau - a fortified wine, made from either fresh, unfermented grape juice or a blend of lightly fermented grape must, to which a Cognac eau-de-vie is added and then matured.

CWM Ranking: First Class 56% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot, 8% petit verdot With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges.

The new second wine of Ch Haut-Batailley, a Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. The nose is aromatic and offers intensity, a fine grain as well as a small sensation of tension. It reveals notes of wild cassis, fresh blackberryand small notes of fresh raspberry associated with touches of spices, bergamot, fresh vanilla, a subtle hint of pepper, fresh nutmeg and a very discreet hint of hazelnut. The palate is fruity, slightly tight, mineral and offers a fine acidulous frame, tension, a beautiful pulpy/ripe fruit and a fine fat. On the palate this wine expresses notes of bright cherry, pulpy/juicy raspberry and small notes strawberry associated with small touches of juicy blackberry as well as hints of tonka bean, toasted and a subtle hint of almond. Good length. A very fine hint of chocolate on the persistence.

Ch Haut-Beyzac lies in the commune of Vertheuil, just to the west of Saint Estephe in the Haut-Médoc region of Bordeaux. Sisters Emmanuelle and Marie-Pierre Raguenot run the 30 hectare property and are both trined oenologists. Their wines are charming and very characteristic, being made from mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe and warm nose, featuring blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, and notes of liquorice, vanilla pod, and fresh mint. Medium-to-full bodied with a supple entry, soft, velvety tannins, and high intensity of dark fruits. Well-structured yet approachable with a "savory and classic" style. Long finish, with lingering fruity and slightly spicy notes.

The always excellent second wine of Ch Grand Puy Lacoste. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Lacoste-Borie gives up notes of warm cassis, Morello cherries and wild blueberries with hints of pencil shavings and bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lively line and well-played, soft tannins with an herbal lift on the finish.

This 2022 has the sweet fruit concentration of 2020 combined with the structural precision and elegance of 2017 but with perhaps an extra intensity of minerality, chalky granitic spice and pure black fruit persistence. Pessac-Leognan, just south of the city of Bordeaux, features gravel-rich soils that produce wines with excellent clarity and definition. Odyssée is a cuvée by Château Haut Nouchet, and its vines are some of the highest elevation in the appellation. The blend is about 60/40 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, with a splash of Petit Verdot. We found this wine impressive in its combination of intensity and restraint. The nose is dark and polished with plum and wild cherries, and notes of liquorice and spice. The mouth is inky and dark but the fruit is laid over a beautifully clean structure of fine gravely tannin. This is a classy, sleek Bordeaux with a beautifully balanced mouthfeel, that tastes a lot more expensive than it is.

CWM Ranking: High 2:1 The nose is fruity and offers power and intensity. There are notes of blackcurrant, blackberry and, to a lesser extent, fresh cherry, combined with hints of violet, lily, Sichuan pepper and a discreet touch of camphor. The palate is fresh, mineral, balanced and offers fresh acidity and a fine tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fresh blackberry, fresh wild blackcurrant and more slightly violet combined with hints of liquorice, wild red berries and fine varietal, liquorice and toasted notes.

Fairly simple cherry and redcurrant aromas lead to blackcurrants and plums in the mouth, with refreshing acidity and a line of bitterness on the back palate. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, which perhaps adds that greeness underneath the ripe fruit. A more structured, tannic wine than initially expected, but with lovely fruit - delicious wine.

The palate is brimming with sweet fruits, balanced by vanilla oak, savoury leather & tobacco, mocha with fresh herbs in the finish. Floral, supple, elegant. Lovely ripe fruit, blackcurrant with coconut-y oak. Well formed, ripe tannin. Slightly coffee / toffee finish. Surprising. 92/100 Jane Anson "This is more proof of the consistency of Meyney. It has clear oak finessing, well held together with a cinnamon dusting and white pepper spicing, giving a gourmet edge with its own character. This feels finessed, contemporary and accomplished; a pretty complete package. This perhaps doesn't quite have the generosity of 2016, as the tannins are a little more tightly-drawn, but this is still good. Retasted several times and it stands out for its quality. A rich effort from this well-known property in St Christoly. Lovely rich mouthfeel, ripe and tannic with a luscious long finish. Low acidity suggests drinking this wine young, say 2018-2024.

The John X Merriman is a powerful wine that rewards aging. In its youth the wine is worth decanting and expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits complemented with cigar tobacco and sour cherrynotes. As the wine ages and its fine grained tannins soften a softer more savoury palate develops revealing wonderful drinkability and tertiary complexity.

Baron Velge sold this estate in 2017, after twenty years of ownership, to Jacky Lorenzetti of Ch Lilian Ladouys. His final vintage here delivers a high quality, enjoyable wine that has sweet, dark fruit and plenty of attractive aromatics upfront. Even better and perfect for drinking in 2025. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. A classic and richly rewarding claret.

92 Points James Suckling, 92 Points Robert Parker Maquis Lien is a hand-crafted blend, resulting in a distinctive wine that reflects the special plot of land the Hurtado family owns in the Colchauga Valley in Chile. The vineyards and winery are located at the confluence of two historic rivers, which brought down sediments from the Andes that established the vineyard's alluvial soils. The same river canyons channel cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean, contributing to the wine's rich fruit character. The nose is very harmonious and the varieties feel very integrated; the Carménère does not dominate the aromas and is nicely blended with the others. There is an extra spark of freshness here along with more restraint and seriousness. A red blend of finesse.

The vines of this 50-acre estate, close to Listrac, have produced a rich wine in this vintage. With its spice and toast character and ripe berry fruits coming together nicely, the wine will develop well. Its potential is for medium-term aging, meaning it will be ready to drink from 2024

‘Domingo Molina’ is 8 km West of Cafayate, in Yacochuya, at 2,000 m above sea level. It lies on the Andean mountainside, where the Calchaquí Valley can be seen. Complex and concentrated, with black fruits, cassis and black pepper, with balanced, rounded tannins.

CWM Ranking: First Class 61% CS 34% M 5% PV deep ruby, gravelly Cabernet nose, plenty of ripe fruit and oak, ripe fruit, quite elegant medium body, decent level of tannin and acidity. Balanced and structured. Drink in 5-10 years.

34 hl/ha. 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Very deep ruby, with lots of fruity, spicy and chocolatey aromas, this is a fleshy, ripe and glossy Sénéjac, that has an ethereal quality for such a big wine. It is polished, yet structured and shows elegance and power. Sénéjac is owned by the Cordier family, owners of Ch. Talbot in Saint-Julien.

Deep ruby, attractive perfumed violet, blackcurrant and cedar nose. Classic Haut-Médoc character with plenty of ripe yet taut blackcurrant fruit and big ripe tannin. Long finish and should evolve well over 15 years.

CWM Ranking: High 2:1 Colour of black cherries with purple rim. Rich black fruit on the nose, a touch of cassis leaf adding lift, surprisingly open. Sweet-fruited and with some oak sweetness on the palate too but with the savoury quality of the Médoc to balance the fruit. Finely textured and supple tannins and a lovely freshness from start to finish.

This classic Cabernet shows inviting flavours of blackberry, with hints of cocoa, almond and cedar. A full-bodied wine with excellent balance on the palate and a smooth lingering aftertaste, it just cries out for some lamb or beef steak. Really delicious.
