Domaine Remi Jeanniard
Remi Jeanniard’s neighbours say that he and his wife are always in the vineyards; even on 2nd January, they were seen out pruning the vines. Remi has just over 7 hectares of vines in and around Morey-St-Denis. The vines are much older than average, with all of his Vieilles Vignes village bottlings being at least 50 years old. This gives a natural concentration to the wines which are both well structured and elegant. Dried fruits, figs, cherries, currants, and violets. Exciting. Less plush than the jeunes vignes, but more vibrant and intense. Supple tannins.

CWM Ranking: High 2:1 The nose is fruity and offers power and intensity. There are notes of blackcurrant, blackberry and, to a lesser extent, fresh cherry, combined with hints of violet, lily, Sichuan pepper and a discreet touch of camphor. The palate is fresh, mineral, balanced and offers fresh acidity and a fine tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fresh blackberry, fresh wild blackcurrant and more slightly violet combined with hints of liquorice, wild red berries and fine varietal, liquorice and toasted notes.

Vincent Girardin
Les Gravières premier cru is on Santenay's border with Chassagne-Montrachet. It gets a bit more sun than most of the commune, and is one of the best Santenay vineyards, for both reds and whites. While the excellent Vincent Girardin is better known for whites, this Pinot is nonetheless reliable, and good value for Burgundy in this particularly good vintage. Plenty of red berry fruit, with earth and subtle spice. It is tangy and vibrant, still youthful. Soft and with lots of savoury interest.

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou
As of 2019, the former Lalande-Borie wine is now Le Petit Ducru, a third wine of the wonderful Ch Ducru-Beaucaillou in Saint-Julien. Le Petit Ducru is from young vines because so much of the former Lalande-Borie site is being replanted, but still shows both austerity and power, with crunchy bright fruit, and is extremely good quality. Gourmet edging with chocolate shavings and black pepper spice, the tannins are fine but they close in more strongly on the finish.

Jean Christophe Meyrot, ex La Violette (one of the top properties in Pomerol) . Full on but good structure. Juicy palate. Certainly ripe. Warm, good acid, persistent. More powerful than elegant. Forthright. Dark ruby color with black fruit notes like blackberries and black cherries, violet and dry herbs, leather and black pepper, nice minerality and French oak, some vanilla and tobacco. Nice balance and structure with a long finish.

Chateau Beau Site
Exhibiting aromas of minty berries, spices and licorice, the 2021 Beau Site is a medium-bodied, lively and nicely balanced wine. It derives from a gravel "croupe" near Calon-Ségur. "Beau-Site" means beautiful site and lies just behind Grand Cru Château Calon-Segur on one of Medoc's highest points with fantastic views over the river Gironde. It was originally classified as a Cru Bourgeois Superieur in 1932 but in 1966 Beau Site was reclassified as a Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnel. The Castéja family, who also own Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille, bought the château in 1955. The château has nearly 100 hectares of vines with an average age of 35 years. Beau-Site's 18th century underground cellar is one of the oldest in the Médoc and presents the perfect maturing conditions for a wine that is vinified with the same care and technique as a Grand Cru Classé. Beau-Site's wine is full of power and temperament, a typical Saint-Estèphe with tannins allowing for keeping this wine for some years.

100% Grenache Noir, harvested from various vineyards in the Roussillon is then partially fermented and spirit added to create a port like red wine, but with softer tannins and lower alcohol 16%. Sweet, fruity and a joy with chocolate. "It smells a little like freshly polished, old teak and mahogany furniture in a huge room full of echoing ancient flagstone floors. But oh, oh, oh, the taste! Blackberry jam. Blackberry jam lavishly heaped on oh-so-slightly-burnt nutty, seedy, dark-rye bread. There is a scrape of tannins; they feel like a piece of broken pottery gently grazed across the tongue. Single vineyard. 60% Mourvèdre (20 years old), 40% Grenache (30 years old) on pudding stone, clay, sand and limestone tuffeau. Hand-picked; whole-bunch, spontaneous fermentation; minimal cap work; very gently pressed. Fermented separately because the Mourvèdre ripens so much later than the Grenache. 12 months in old oak barrels of 600, 500 and 400 litres. "If I’d not known what this wine was, and put it to my nose, my first guess would be Pinot Noir, Tasmania. Rosehips. Nectarine skin. Hibiscus tea. Morels. Then, after tasting it, I’d change my mind. I’d wonder if this was Cinsault, one of Alex Milner’s wraith-like beauties, perhaps: the bruised rose petals, the jasmine tea, the taste of prickly pears and dust and pungent-peppery-green at the back of my throat. Then I smell garrigue - cistus, broom heather, wild thyme, the smell of the wind blowing through holm oaks and twisted pines and I am in the south of France. This is the fey child of Roussillon. The 2018 “La Bauge” is a classic Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It is a wine of great aromatics and character showing black cherry/cranberry fruit, rose petal, earth and spice. It has a lavish structure and rich wood scents. Balance is the key to this wine. A balance of oak and fruit, a balance of tannin and acid, and a balance of elegance and intensity. The "La Bauge" Pinots have a more integrated structure and suppleness early on, making them enjoyable now, though they will age well.
