Dom. Gilles Remoriquet
Peppy, concentrated fruit - plums, cherries, and currants. Tenses, clean acidity, fresh, fragrant, structured, proper. Layered and dynamic. For the mid-long term. Gilles Remoriquet is not a winemaker who rests on his laurels. He is forever looking for ways to improve his wines. Most recently he has been to the Jura to see a specialist about selecting the right blend of manure and has bought a second sorting table which eliminates under-ripe berries by flotation! Cuvaisons are long, giving a light colour yet concentrated, intense fruit flavours. Remoriquet is one of the top estates in Nuits but the prices have yet to catch up. At the top of the range the Vosne-Romannée 1er Cru au dessous des Malconsorts is situated next to La Tâche and tastes like it is!

Moorooduc Estate
Kate McIntyre is the queen of Mornington, consistently turning out the most critically acclaimed wines from this famous area near Melbourne. "A real treat of a wine, with rhubarb, beetroot, strawberry and spice flavours. A showboater, and while the stemmy character is a strong influence, I think it works brilliantly." 17.5 jancisrobinson.com (2014 Vintage)

The Crusher Pinot Noir is powerfully aromatic, with notes of pomegranate, rose petal and nutmeg. Juicy and spicy on the palate, this wine exudes flavours of plum, glazed strawberry and cinnamon bread from 12 months of French oak aging.

Greywacke
A seductive combination of blackberries, blueberries and sweet black plums intermingled with roasted chestnuts, cloves and dark tobacco – rich and exotic with hints of lavender and rose petal. Meo Camuzet
Fleshy plump forest berry flavours, structured, but very velvety. Rich dark notes of bramble and black cherry. Dense and packed with character, fruity and full of life. From high quality parcels on the slopes at the bottom of the Le Clos and Les Herbues hills, perhaps more worthy of 1er Cru status. Along with Marsannay this is aged for less time in oak barriques than the other Meo Camuzet wines, between a maximum of 10 to 12 months, and there is very little new oak to preserve the charming fruity freshness of the wine.

Benjamin Leroux
Having created a name for himself as régisseur (general manager) of Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard, Benjamin Leroux established, with English backing, a small négociant business based in Beaune since 2007. The range is confined to the Côte d’Or, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin, with the intention of developing farming contracts or indeed purchasing vineyards in the future. The possibilities are very exciting for this exceptionally talented vigneron. Benjamin is a master at delivering purity of fruit alongside a seamless texture in his wines which have only the subtlest influence of oak. Ben now has access to all the vines from his supplier in Vosne, so this year this wine is an even more complex quilt of different vineyards, namely Basses Maizières, Genaivrières, La Rivière, Aux Raviolles and Les Jacquines. It’s full of sumptuous, open and juicy fruit, with a lovely positive mid-palate. The greater volume this year from the newer vineyards means a little less whole-bunch, at 33%. Drink 2021-2027.

Domaine Denis Carre
Les Noizons lies just below the Premier Cru Pézerolles vineyard. It tends to produce lifted, delicate renditions of Pommard and the 2017 from Domaine Denis Carré is a case in point. The nose majors on crunchy red berry and floral aromas, while the palate is characterised by refreshing acidity and chalky tannins. Let it shine alongside roast game or a simple leek and Gruyère tart. Drink now to 2027.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon
A small village nestling in a valley behind Meursault and Volnay, Monthelie produces mostly red wines, mini-Volnays with appealing fruit but sometimes a rustic edge, and a small amount of white wine. The best wines come from the steep slopes above the village, such as Les Duresses. In a bowl above Monthèlie, these are the latest to ripen of the Comtes Lafon vines. The resulting wine is always robust and full of black cherry fruit, but the tannins are supple leading to extremely enjoyable, mid-term drinking.

Comte Armand
The family of the Comte Armand has owned the vineyard of Clos des Epéneaux and the winery buildings in Pommard since 1826 when Jean-François Armand married Clothilde Marey. Unfortunately the vineyard was not replanted after phylloxera until 1930, but since then it has confirmed its rating as one of Pommard’s very finest sites. Pascal Marchand, a young Quebecois from the merchant marine, made the wines here from the 1985 to 1998 vintages inclusive. During his time in charge he completely transformed the domaine, elevating its ranking to that of the greatest estate in Pommard. His place has been taken by Benjamin Leroux who had been working part time at the domaine during his studies since 1991. After many years when the Clos des Epeneaux was the sole wine made at the domaine, further vineyards were acquired in 1994: Auxey-Duresses, Auxey-Duresses premier cru, Volnay and Volnay Fremiets. Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2017 Mid cherry red. Scented with dark-red fruit. Light herbal/stemmy character giving freshness to the ripeness of the fruit, which is deep and rounded and generous. Sweet cherries on the long finish. Already smooth.

Occidental
Steve Kistler, started as a winemaker at Ridge (long-term fave of ours and true California royalty) in the 1970s. He and his dedicated long-standing team founded this winery in his favourite coastal one in eastern Sonoma, cool and perfect for gloriously complex, aromatic Pinot Noir. His skill and dedication are peerless, his wines a sensual joy. Very rare, we only get a few dozen a year from the tiny UK allocation. A must-try Parker "The 2018s from Occidental are simply magnificent" "While everyone knows of Steve Kistler’s remarkable chardonnays, I believe his pinot noir will ultimately prove even more historic." - ROBERT PARKER, JR.

Domaine Follin-Arbelet
Vigneron Franck Follin-Arbelet established his domaine in Aloxe-Corton in the early 1990s; his brother Stéphane runs Bouchard Père & Fils in Beaune. Franck’s 2017 Aloxe-Corton shows a touch of reduction on the nose, though this quickly blows off to reveal bright red berry aromas. The wine is elegant, with chalky tannins and crisp acidity. Hints of toasty oak and richer black fruit flavours come through towards the finish, where that cooling acidity also persists. Drink now to 2025.

The medium-ruby colored IGP Pays D'Oc Les Zazous (100% Pinot Noir) offers a pretty, elegant style as well as attractive notes of dried cherries, dusty soil and spice. It's charming, has no hard edges and a clean finish, all of which make it ideal for drinking over the coming couple of years.

Domaine des Croix
Made with 40 percent whole bunches, the nose is intensely fruity and floral, with crushed strawberry and peony notes. The palate has Grand Cru concentration and intensity, with an elegance that covers the underlying steel. Drink 2024-2030. David is delighted that he finally has a good crop for the first time in many years. Furthermore, he is very pleased with the quality and style of the reds, highlighting their clarity, definition and gourmandise, pointing out that these are airy, red-fruited and pure wines in the same mould as 2000, a vintage which drank well young and still tastes good today. He has extracted an extra level of colour and texture by working the fruit a little harder and carrying out a longer maceration than in the past few years, with impressive results.

Domaine des Croix
This is an early-ripening site on alluvial soil, with gravel over clay. David uses a lot of stems (45%) to give some grip to a wine that could be too supple. It has succulent perfume and a nice twist of gentle discipline at the end. Drink 2021-2026. The former Domaine Duchet in Beaune has been bought by American Roger Forbes and his co-investors, and entrusted to the care of David Croix, the gifted winemaker for Camille Giroud. David, the emerging talent of the year according to Bourgogne Aujourd'hui magazine (issue no. 73) is in complete charge at the domaine, which has been renamed Domaine des Croix. The first vintage, 2005, comprised Corton-Charlemagne, Bourgogne Rouge, Beaune and various Beaune premiers crus from Pertuisots, Cent Vignes, Bressandes and Grèves. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008.

Domaine du Comte Armand
This is from the lieux-dits Famines, which has the old vines, and Grands Champs, which is just above Famines. You can sense how Paul’s winemaking has worked: there is a lovely, ripe, open entry of pure coulis, but then a tightening of the tannins to pull the wine together.

Fiona Leroy
This is Fiona Leroy's first vintage in Burgundy and what a first showing this is. Fiona approaches winemaking from a 'common sense' standpoint, that means all vineyards are managed organically. Part of the approach chez Fiona Leroy involves manual work and no new oak barrels. These wines are only going to go up in price as people catch on. So enjoy it now at a sensible price.

Domaine Fernand et Laurent Pillot
In recent years this has been stunning value and, even more, a stunning red Burgundy. The 2018 is true to form, a fleshy, layered, old-vine red Burgundy that is both delicious now and also age-worthy. It hails from a single 0.94-hectare parcel of 40-plus-year-old Pinot Noir vines grown on the red clays of Les Grandes Terres (on the Santenay side of the commune). This clay-rich soil type has always produced the finest and plumpest reds of the village.

Domaine Arlaud
"From a .36 ha parcel in Mochamps; 75% from 25+ year old vines and the remainder is from 40+ year old vines** A discreet application of wood frames intensely earthy and somewhat sauvage aromas of violet, tea and spicy black pinot fruit. There is excellent volume to the powerful and muscular yet seductively textured big-bodied flavors that deliver very fine depth on the beautifully long finish. This is a big but not rustic effort though there is an ample amount of youthful austerity present that suggests this is unlikely to drink well without at least 6 to 8 years of bottle age." 91/94 Allen Meadows, Burghound.com (57), January 2015

Domaine Chantal Remy
Jancis Robinson MW OBE 18/20 "Quite substantial and powerfully fruity. Sort of over-the-top and devil-may-care in a good way. Very clean fruit that makes a great impact. Sinewy tannins. Still dry on the finish but there is real vitality here. Very polished and assured. You just need to wait, which is not bad thing in a top-quality wine. Heavier." "winemaking is resolutely traditional; no herbicides or insecticides are used in the vineyards, a third new wood is employed for élévage, during a long cask ageing there is just one racking and bottling takes place by hand two summers after the vintage, without fining or filtration. Classic, finely-tuned Burgundies that demonstrate an arresting purity and finesse. They are delicate and designed for pleasure!" robertparker.com "they are worth seeking out, especially for those that like traditional, unpretentious and pure Pinot Noir"
