Domaine Billard Pere et Fils
Jérôme and Elisabeth Billard are the 4th generation of his family to have managed Domaine Billard Pere & Fils. Their winery is located in La Rochepot, a village just west of Saint-Aubin. Jérôme has built up the estate's vineyard holdings to an impressive 18.5 hectares, with the largest area in Hautes Cotes de Beaune, as well as Beaune, St Romain, St Aubin, Auxey Duresses and Pommard. Jérôme’s philosophy is "expressing the typicity of the terroir.". Yields are low and grapes are concentrated because of organic farming techniques, extensive pruning and cover crops between vines. His trusty Percheron steed, Raphael, ploughs the vineyards at the estate and for Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted on a vibrating table to ensure only the best are selected. Winemaking is low intervention. Pinot Noir is foot trodden to gently extract tannins, only natural yeasts are used and wines are left on lees in oak barrels before bottling at the estate. As a consequence of these meticulous efforts, Billard offers high quality wines with layers of complexity and concentration at surprisingly low prices. The Hautes Cotes de Beaune White comes from a single 3 hectare vineyard called La Justice which is found next to Saint Aubin on a sunny, chalky hillside with good drainage. Perfumed and floral with nice peach notes. Citrus, peach, and oaky and vanilla flavours with some white pepper. Nice acidity and length.

Domaine Gavignet
A wonderful example of the 2022 vintage. Purity of fruit, wonderful aromatics and a delicate, ethereal quality. From UK agent Thorman Hunt: Philippe Gavignet and his son Benoit create Nuits-Saint-Georges with a profound elegance, countering the appellation’s reputation for often delivering more “rustique” wines. Gavignet’s wines are a testament to the terroir’s potential for producing refined Burgundy. Established in 1979, with state-of-the-art cellars built only a couple of years ago, we were treated to a fantastic tasting. Most of Philippe Gavignet’s Pinot Noir vines are notably old, with the majority planted during the 1930s and 1950s. The vineyards are cultivated as naturally as possible, steering clear of herbicides and pesticides. Hand-harvesting is a standard practice, and the wines undergo aging in a combination of new and older French oak barrels, with no more than one-third being new oak. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Interestingly, Gavignet remains somewhat of an insider’s gem, overshadowed by more prominent names in the village that command higher prices.

Domaine Danjou-Banessy
Natural, biodynamic and vegan. Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre from 80 year old vines, Made without filtering or fining. Pale but gorgeous mid red colour. At first on the nose, you are like "What even is that?". Whatever it is, you know that you like it. Elegant, subtle fruit is intermixed with gentle herb, earth and savoury characters. Deep and wonderful. On the palate the wine is elegant and deep again, but not heavy in the slightest. Ruffled fruit and savoury notes with minerality and real finesse. These wines are like no other from the Roussillon. Outstanding.

Domaine Grosbois
This is top-class. Silky, seductive and concentrated but with a light touch typical of the genre. From the website of UK agents Thorman Hunt: Domaine Grosbois is a 9h Domaine run by two brothers, Nicolas and Sylvain. Their family vineyard is located at a place called “The Pressoir” Panzoult in the Chinon appellation in the heart of the Loire Valley. Nicolas arrived at the family estate in 2008, after spending 10 years as a “flying winemaker” and having spent time in New Zealand, Australia, Chile and Oregon. After his time abroad, Nicolas strongly believes in not vinifying and ageing in wood, choosing concrete instead to preserve the freshness and vitality. No old oak has been used since 2015. Sylvain similarly spent time abroad in Chile, Oregon working for Domaine Drouhin and Australia. The brothers are passionate about organic viticulture and show their wines at The Raw Wine Fair. The Gabare cuvée comes from the old vines of a clay limestone vineyard. The grapes are destemmed and undergo a 2 to 3 day cold maceration. The wines undergo a 20 day cuvaison in concrete tanks and are then also aged in concrete.

Chateau Palais Cardinal
Château Palais Cardinal, a magnificent estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, takes its name from the sublime former residence dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, the remains of which are still visible. The property took the name of Palais Cardinal in the 14th century, when it was enlarged. Owned by the Louis Ballande family since 2018, Château Palais Cardinal is now one of the leading names in the Saint-Émilion appellation. From 2008 to 2018, Château Palais Cardinal has experienced unprecedented growth. From 4 hectares of vines in 2008, Château Palais Cardinal now boasts 22 hectares. Located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, Château Palais Cardinal is an exceptional vineyard planted on some of the finest terroirs in the Saint-Émilion appellation. Combining tradition and modernity, Château Palais Cardinal's ambition is to produce great wines that reflect the identity of the Saint-Émilion appellation, thanks to the constant attention paid to the vines, the monitoring of each plot and the appropriate vinification methods. The grape varieties planted in the vineyards reflect those found on the right bank. Merlot (71%) is the predominant grape variety, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (23%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). Aged for a minimum of 12 months, the wines of Château Palais Cardinal offer an intense aromatic expression marked by fine notes of black fruit with hints of incense. Structured by a silky body, the palate evolves with suppleness, held together by a fine acidity.

Yves Cuilleron
A rather unusual 100% Marsanne from a small appellation in the Northern Rhone. Textural, concentrated, impressive. Terrific wine. From the website of UK agent Thorman Hunt: A top star domaine. Yves Cuilleron took over the reins as the 4th generation vigneron in 1987. He is based in Chavanay, just south of Condrieu and has built up a formidable reputation in recent years. Always developing new ideas and cuvées, our tasting here each year is mightily impressive. We are lucky to have the allocation we do. Having started with Yves’ stunning Vin de France, we now have access to his amazing range of Grands Vins. He now owns and leases over 75 hectares. We think they are all great wines and they are all in the style of Yves Cuilleron – lingering, rich white wines and big rich minerally reds.

Cantina Diomede
Old vines, Amarone-style appassimento, tiny yields. Wonderfully extracted, deeply layered and complex. A year in French oak. V. classy. One of our biggest-selling wines. Old vines, Amarone-style appassimento, tiny yields. Wonderfully extracted, deeply layered and complex. A year in French oak. The 'Black Grape of Troy" another southern best. From Decanter "Left on the vine to partially dry, the grapes for this wine were not harvested until early November, giving it a powerful character and rich texture. Dark, liquorice-imbued fruits of the forest aromas alongside menthol and blueberry notes, almost medicinal. It is really rich on the palate with plummy, leathery flavours, macerated black cherries and even a hint of nectarine on the finish. Really gorgeous and complex..."

Domaine Meo Camuzet
One of the finest estates in Burgundy. This is from a single 1.5-hectare plot in the lieu-dit Le Bas de Combe whose location next to Vosne-Romanée is borne out by this wine’s open, lifted bouquet which would be more Vosne than Nuits but for that engaging hint of spice. The oak (50 percent new) is well-integrated and there’s a pleasing roundness to the palate - indeed, this is remarkably complete for such a young wine

Château de Saint Cosme
St Cosme holds a sacral place in the greater canon of Southern Rhone wines; in Gigondas it holds firmly its place in the top few of the very best. Not an unambitious wine by any measure, but it is not trying to be Chateauneuf, and it doesn't need to be - grunty and fine in equal measure: Gigondas in spades. Gigondas growers roll their eyes at Chateauneuf comparisons I know, but what the hell here I go: try getting a Chateauneuf anything like as yum as this at the price - an easy metric and an easy win. Situated in the heart of Gigondas is one of the region's oldest estates, Chateau St. Cosme. The property has been in the same family, for some 500 years. In 1992 Louis Barroul took control of the winemaking from his father and made that 'giant leap' to bottle and market his own wine. Previously his father had sold his wine to the local co-operative. However since taking over, Louis has truly launched Chateau St Cosme into the stratosphere of the wine world. The house is now the flagship for Gigondas around the globe and has greatly contributed to its reputation as one of the top crus in the Southern Rhone, second only to Chateauneuf. If there is one person determined to single-handedly prove the great potential of the terroir of Gigondas, it is Louis, with his simply outstanding ‘Parcellaire’ cuvees, from individual vineyard plots. These are truly phenomenal, world-class wines. Wine spectator 95/100 "Dark and winey, this structured offering packs red and black currant paste flavors together with threads of charcoal, warm stone, bay leaf and savory, ending with a long tug of cast iron through the finish. A blue chip for cellaring." Jeb Dunnuck 93-95/100 I thought the 2019 Gigondas was gorgeous, with a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated style as well as classic Saint Cosme ground pepper, mineral, cured meats, and assorted red and black fruits. It’s a powerful, concentrated base cuvée with the mid-palate and structure to evolve for 15-20 year

Famille Perrin
The Dentelles de Montmirail (from the Latin mons mirabilis, ‘extraordinary mountain’) is a small, jagged mountain chain that forms a natural amphitheatre around the sandstone village of Gigondas and its surrounding vineyards. Roman legionaries chose this beautiful, protected site to plant their grapevines. Located mid-slope at 300-400 metres above sea level, the Famille Perrin vineyard is amongst the most historical vineyards in Gigondas. It benefits from a flow of cold air which blows through the valley situated to the west of the village. The vines grow on limestone, calcareous marl and sandy soils, giving the Grenache immense finesse and elegance with unique aromas. Some old plots of Grenache planted on sand have pre-phylloxera vines.

Turley
Larry Turley and his winemakers Tegan Passalacqua and Karl Wicka continue to produce a fantastic range of wines from some of California’s oldest, head-pruned, dry-farmed Zinfandel vineyards. Impressive, rich, juicy Zinfandel from a very good producer in Napa Valley. Really (for California!) good value. From the website of UK agent Thorman Hunt: They have managed to persuade the owners of some of California’s finest old vineyards to let them take total control of viticulture; farming organically, reducing yields to extremely low levels and picking very late. Winemaking is totally unmanipulated, with very gentle extraction. The wines are matured for 14-16 months in 75% French, 25% American oak barrels (25% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. “Juvenile” comes from young vines (6-25 years old), interplanted, from several of their old vine designated vineyards – including Hayne, Ueberroth, Pesenti, Salvador and Vineyard 101. Whilst it offers sumptuous, joyous fruit, it also gives more than a glimpse of Turley’s single vineyard wines.

100% Grenache from 130+ year old vines. Complex floral aromas. On the palate the fruits, such as raspberry and morello cherry, are crunchy and fresh. There is also a very strong stony/mineral feeling. The finish is long and pure. A vibrant wine. 97/100 Matt Walls, Decanter Magazine March 2024

Clos de Trias
Even Bakke is a force of nature. Norwegian-American with many vintages under his belt in USA, he found and bought the most amazing winery in the cool hills behind the Dentelles mountain of Gigondas fame. This really is the place to be, and super-old vines too. Wild, expressive naturally beautiful wines. He's a huge guy - six foot six and abut four feet across the shoulders but the wines are all delicate (by local standards), and nuanced. The 'basic' Ventoux is insanely juicy - like biting into a cherry brandy liqueur chocolate - with intriguing wild notes, a little dusty, a lot fascinating. All wines not released until ready to enjoy. Truly a must-try. "Clos des Trias is comprised of 19 hectares, with a healthy share of 80+-year-old vines in microbial rich Triassic soils. The vineyards are situated high in the hills at 300-500 meters above sea level, allowing them to escape much of the exhaustive heat that their lower altitude neighbours experience. To extract the most from his stunning terroir, Even employs the most natural, non-interventionalist methods of winemaking possible. The winery was officially certified organic in 2012 and also follows many biodynamic principles. Even relies on spontaneous fermentation, with no addition of yeast, or temperature control and keeps sulphur levels to a minimum. The wines are truly allowed to ‘make-themselves’. Some of his reds are aged for up to 6 years in old oak fourdre, yet still the minerality, concentration, life and perfume the wines exhibit is somewhat bewildering, and simply a testament to Even’s understanding of his land and vines." Wine Advocate Jeb Dunnuck on the 2009 Clos de Trias Ventoux "Also superb, and an incredible value, the 2009 Ventoux is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and the balance Carignan and Cinsault. Aged a massive 40 months 75% in tank and 25% in demi-muid, it offers spectacular notes of spice-box, kirsch and licorice that flow to a full-bodied, decadently textured red that s

Weingut Max Ferd.Richter
The Erdener Treppchen is one of the most legendary vineyard sites on the Mosel and was already an active vineyard in Roman times. The iron-rich, red slate soil gives the Rieslings grown here their very own intense minerality and race. This offers very refined and deeply complex notes of peach, orchard fruits, citrus and dried flowers. The wine combines a delicious creaminess and zest with freshness. It is racy and multi-layered on the palate with a sappy and very long finish. This terrific Spätlese is a great ambassador of the Estate’s classical airy and delicate style.

Louis Roederer
The bouquet is open and rich yet also wonderfully fresh. It offers an explosion of ripe, delicate fruit with intense notes of mirabelle plum from the Pinot noir, complemented by sweet lemon meringue pie and delicate notes of jasmine from the Chardonnay. The nose opens up to reveal autolytic characters and evolves towards smoky, roasted notes and freshly baked pastries. The palate is deep and dense with a big, well-structured backbone. The texture is simply mesmerising with its fleshy mouthfeel from the Pinot Noir that coats the palate before giving way to an incredible saline freshness with a pleasant hint of bitterness. This wine combines the strength, intensity and power of the delectably ripe Pinot Noirs which are balanced to perfection by the chalky freshness and density from the Chardonnay which forms the majority of the blend. This 244th blend from the Louis Roederer Champagne House is based on the finest successes of the 2019 harvest, a year of record-breaking temperatures brought by particularly intense heat waves. Dry and continental and of magnificent maturity, this year gave us wines that were dense and fresh, with a masterful balance, conducive to bringing out the powerful and luscious Collection character in the blend.

Crystallum
The signature aromatics of wild strawberry, black cherry and sweet Indian spices are all in place as well as pomegranate, red plum and cocoa. A tense and structured palate speaks to the 60% whole bunches used in fermentation, with the tannins showing a pine-like freshness. With a generosity of fruit and a particularly upright focus this wine will age into 2035. Once a location for a film based on the life of Napoleon, the 'Cuvée Cinema' vineyard produces intense, age worthy Pinot Noir from Dijon clones, with aromas of sour cherry, musk, forest floor and flint.

Famille Perrin
Domaine du Clos des Tourelles is located below the village of Gigondas. This historic 3 hectare vineyard of very old Grenache on limestone soils with a marly-sandy matrix is the last Clos still existing in Gigondas. Leading the wines of Gigondas to new heights, Dom. de Clos des Tourelles is made in tiny quantities in a boutique winery in the centre of the village. Ruby red in colour. A meaty nose at first, then cassis, dusty cocoa, and floral potpourri. The oak is well held. The palate is quite tight at first, with fresh acidity, slightly sour cherry flavours, and a herbal backbone. Then all becomes warm and fruity, with dusty tannin, and a long savoury finish. Layered and complex.

Crystallum
A wonderfully complex barrel-fermented Chardonnay from different vineyards inland from the coastal town of Hermanus. It boasts aromas of white peach, papaya, jasmine and hints of lemongrass. A complex, balanced vintage that reflects the distinctness of its five fruit. White peach, litchi and green apple on the nose with lime zest, butterscotch and a gunflint and smoke on the palate. Restrained oaking and crisp acidity providing leanness and edge to support the primary fruit.

Il Palazzone
The 2018 hits a new high for Palazzone's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG bottling. Piercing, pure, bright and energetic yet with real complexity even at this young stage. These guys are working so well. There has been some very impressive press for the 2018 also: On jancisrobinson.com Walter Speller wrote the below whilst awarding the wine 17.5/20 "Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm, savoury and minerally nose with dark spice hints. Lively sour-cherry fruit on the palate and quite pure. Elegant, long, perfumed and juicy finish. Really fine and intriguing. Gorgeous". And in Decanter Magazine Michaela Morris included Palazzone's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 in the "Top-value Brunello di Montalcino 2018: the 10 to buy" article published earlier in 2023. "This brings together fruit from cool northwest-facing plots, at 540 metres near the town of Montalcino, with warmer, lower-lying vineyards in the region’s southeast. The 2018 saw a slightly shorter maceration – just two weeks as opposed to three. Taking time to come into focus, the nose suggests attractive strawberry blossom, cinnamon and rosehip. The palate is lean and clear fruited with red currants and lots of mineral nuance packed in. The tannins are tightly wound and sinewy, giving texture and backbone, and the sappy acidity is positively scrumptious. Beautifully balanced in its proportions". 92/100 Vinous Media 93/100, October 2022 "....the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a menagerie of foreign spices, wild herbs and dried fruits. This is elegant and finessed, with vibrant acidity enlivening its tart wild berry fruits, and pretty inner rose tones that evolve toward the close. Nuances of licorice and sour cherry linger on, as the 2018 finishes light on structure but big on character. This is so enjoyable already that it’s hard to imagine waiting, but do make sure to cellar for at least a year or two for the full effect".

Billecart-Salmon
This cuvée was named in tribute to Louis, Elisabeth Salmon’s brother, who was passionate about oenology and highly involved in winemaking from the earliest creation of the House. Originating from the best parcels of the Côte des Blancs, the Blanc de Blancs vintage is endowed with purity and minerality. Its appearance is crystal-clear pale-gold colour with delicate glints marked by shades of yellow and green. A persistent and sparkling effervescence. On the nose the first expression is distinctive for its elegant patina that’s nutty and complex, with flesh and pulp of citrus fruits (mandarin, yuzu, and pear in syrup). An aromatic profile of distinguished and sophisticated purity and a chalky, balanced and crystalline character (fresh honey and raw butter). An undeniable floral charm. On the palette, A creamy sensation in the mouth with a beautifully chiselled finesse. Beautiful and refreshing balance of natural flavours(marzipan, flaky brioche, white fruits and white pepper). This powerful, soaring winewith majestic typicity prolongs its finish towards an aromatic persistence of incredible length (cardamom, fresh mango and lemon caviar).

Originating from the best parcels of the Côte des Blancs, the Blanc de Blancs vintage is endowed with purity and minerality. Distinguished elegance of a mineral and exceptionally precise Chardonnay with a natural balance that is a harmonious representation of the best parcels of grand crus of Côte des Blancs: Cramant, Chouilly for the finesse, Avize for the force of character and Mesnil-sur-Oger for the structure and longevity. A creamy sensation in the mouth with a beautifully chiselled finesse. Lovely refreshing balance with natural flavours (zest of citron, almond biscuit and white pepper). This powerful wine with a majestic typicity prolongs its finish towards an aromatic persistence of incredible length (flesh of sweet citrus fruits, cardamom and vanilla-flavoured cream puffs). The unique dimension of a great Blanc de Blancs, pure and intense, with a directness perfectly associated with its low dosage. Its potential and its balance express a remarkable finesse worthy of the most sophisticated food pairings (a casserole of whole calf sweetbread from Corrèze, a creamy shellfish risotto).
