Has to be one of the best-value most impressive French red wines on the UK market. Special edition made for us by famed Chateauneuf grower Roger Sabon, the wine-maker is esteemed Didier Negron. Charmingly honest, hearty (15%!), herbal, dense and punchy, juicy red from the classic southern varieties of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault & friends. What a beauty, what a bargain.
Although full-bodied the wine has soft tannins and a silky texture - this is the beauty of Southern Rhone reds, ready to enjoy as soon as they're made, unlike Bordeaux or Burgundy. Grenache in this hot sunny heaven gives ripe raspberry and black cherry notes and depth, Syrah gives a classic black pepper spice and dark-chocolate grip. A cool fennel / mint edge and lift.
'Declassified' as Vin de France, but this is not a 'negoce' wine made from bought-in grapes: all the grapes come from Sabon estates, and winemaking is by Didier Negron, as per their top wines.
About Roger Sabon:
Domaine Roger Sabon came into being in 1952 when the family vineyards were split into three distinct entities (the other two being Domaine Chante-Cigale and Clos Mont Olivet).
Robert Parker, who awarded their 1988 vintage a perfect 100 rating, the first Chateauneuf-du-Pape so honoured, has this to say about Domaine Roger Sabon: This estate has been at the top of its game for many years and any partisan of Rhone Valley wines who has not yet tried a wine from Domaine Roger Sabon should make every effort to do so... This estate has been making exceptionally high-quality wines for years, but recent vintages seem to have risen to a new level of quality.
New wine laws from the 2020 vintage prohibit the use of the Appassimento (partial drying) technique for white grapes from Veneto, so sourcing of the Garganega for this lovely wine has moved to Puglia. The blend of Garganega & Sauvignon remains the same, with Sauvignon Blanc still coming from Veneto. Partial maceration with dried grapes and cold fermentation enhances fruitiness and elegant aromatic notes. The change has resulted in even better wine, that's perfect as an aperitif, with delicate first courses or white meats and fish.
Beautifully traditional interpretation of Sangiovese food wine - evolved, resolved and rural, all leaf tea and warm hay and Tuscan farmhouse with a delicate raisiny fruit to ameliorate the tannin. Class.
Deep, vivid ruby red. Attractive aromas of berries and mature red fruits. Interesting spiced and mentholated tones typical of the Maipo valley. The palate shows the classical force of the variety, with a firm body, pleasing persistence and tasty end.
The idea of this ??wine came out during a curious meeting between wine experts: Valentino Sciotti, today CEO of the Farnese Group, Filippo Baccalaro, chief winemaker of the same group and third generation of Piedmontese winemakers, Hugh Johnson, the most famous wine journalist in the world, and Jean Marc Sauboua of the third generation of Bordeaux winemakers. During that particular meeting, 18 years ago, Hugh Johnson launched a challenge to the two young winemakers: that of creating a great wine with the character of Southern Italy, forged with the best varietals of that territory; a wine with the modest name of table wine, but with the soul of a great wine, that stands out for its ability to be unique and extraordinarily superior to what the market offers.
Montepulciano, Primitivo, Negroamaro, Sangiovese & Malvasia Nera.
Astonishing 3-time winner of 99/100 Luca Maroni "Best Italian Red 2018". Previous IWC Abruzzo Trophy. Grower voted best in Italy 3 times. Massive, Epic wine. 100% new oak (60% American 40% French)
Menfi, Sicily. Long the star wine of this modern, impressive grower. Perfect expression of Fiano, teasing green melon ripeness with lemon-peel zest. Prefect for Middle Eastern food, green herbs. Bone dry, no oak.
Sustainable, Vegan, Vegetarian
Pale lemon yellow this Sauvignon Blanc is a fresh young wine. It offers aromas of mint, melon and pineapple with refreshing citrus notes of lime and grapefruit. The palate is soft and fruity with a medium body and a well balanced acidity.
A smooth, fruity Pinot Noir from the Casablanca Valley. Red cherry flavours with a sweet, ripe fruit finish. A portion of the wine is matured in French oak barrels which adds a roundness and a hint of spice to the finished wine.
Fruity, brambly and supple, this distinctly Argentinian Malbec will impress with generous lashing of plum, blackberry and hints of vanilla spice.
About the winery:
Bodega Sottano was founded in 1890 by Mr. Fioravante Sottano who settled in Mendoza after moving from Italy. Today the estate is a byword for quality, modern Mendoza wines that express a delicious sense of place.
Low yield, old vines on arid volcanic Mt Vulture up to 800m altitude. Two ancient grapes one famed in Roman times one pre-Roman (Greco = Greek, southern Italy was Hellenic before the Romans arrived, and what did they ever do for...). Basilicata is the forgotten mid-south but in wines terms it is extraordinary and fascinating.
Made by a super-modern outfit, they have lifted this into proper word-class status. Aromatic, it smells like green melon and elderflower, light, no oak, pure, snappy. A triumph.
Decanter: "A lush white with striking tropical notes that would be great with a peach and burrata salad, though it has the freshness to make a fine aperitif too."
One of our best-selling wines - and it is obvious why!
Delightful "blingy" prosecco presented in one of the most striking gold bottles. Fresh and fruity on the palate with a balanced and creamy finish. Great as an aperitif and always well received as a gift.
Villa Sandi is a beautiful Palladian style villa which dates back to 1622 and lies in the heart of Treviso, at the bottom of the foot of the Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG hills. This wine is fruity and flowery with delicate aromatic and citrus hints. Fresh and lively in the mouth. Light bodied and elegant with an agreeably aromatic and fruit persistence. An excellent aperitif to accompany savouries. Ideal with steamed shellfish.
A cherry-packed joy. Lovely to let the sun shine on Sangiovese of Chianti fame, bringing plump ripe fruit with the classic bite. Multi-award winning grower. Great fun for the price

"Vibrant red fruit, crushed morello cherries with herbal undertones; raspberry vanilla oak with spice, lively acidity and firm tannins. Lovely drink"
This wine is ruby red in colour, with youthful highlights. On the nose, fragrant fruit with prominent notes of dark cherries and fresher hints of pepper and aromatic herbs, typical of Corvina and Corvinone, the historic varieties of this appellation. This Valpolicella is impressively lively and playful on the palate, whilst exhibiting delicacy and finesse at the same time.
A slightly off dry sparkling wine made from white grapes including Glera the grape variety of Prosecco. Made by our main prosecco producer you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference in a blind tasting, but you will notice the price difference! Great value.
