Francois Xavier AKA 'FX'. FX was vineyard manager for Tom Lubbe at Domaine Matassa for five years. He spent a further year with Domaine Danjou-Banessy. After such time this local lad set up in Espira to make his own wholly exciting wines. Whole bunch fermentation in stainless-steel tanks for 5 days for this beautiful Mourvedre from very old wines. On the morning of the 6th day the grapes were pressed, and the juice transferred back to stainless-steel tanks to complete fermentation. Only the naturally occurring indigenous yeasts were used in the fermentation. The wine was then aged 5 months in tank. Prior to bottling a very low dose of sulphites was added. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Vivid, bright and wild wine.

The colour is an intense ruby red, with black to violet tones in contours. Aromas: Ripe red fruits, figs, spicy by nature (black pepper and cumin) with the aromas provided by the wood such as smoked and Tobacco. Mouth: Intense and sweet entry due to the ripe, firm and intense Tannins, product of a long and slow maturity. Medium to high structure, juicy has balanced acidity and long finish. A rich and very elegant red, a real treat.

A small family-run bodega near the village of Navarrete, in the heart of Rioja D.O.C., making wines of great integrity and some finesse. It was founded in 1918 and is today run by Antonio Navajas and his wife. This is a big favourite of many of our customers and on a 'value for money' basis it is not hard to understand why.

Another perennial favourite, this is an old vine Syrah-dominated cuvee that comes from vines around the village of Roaix, which is northeast of Gigondas. Its vibrant ruby color is followed by terrific notes of blueberries, blackberries, pepper and resinous herbs, and it has a kiss of vanilla that will be completely integrated by the time this sees the inside of a bottle. This is a medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure beauty.

A classy Chardonnay from organic vines planted on chalky soils, just 29km from the Pacific Ocean in Chile's Limarí Valley. Fresh citrus aromas with hints of peach. An appealing cool climate style, combining crisp acidity with cool minerality and zingy citrus fruits, rounded out with a touch of vanilla creaminess from light oaking (55% of the wine is aged in mostly used French oak for 10 months).

Made from the native Sicilian grape Nero d'Avola around 30% of which are 'Passito' (ie dried virtually to raisins before pressing) this is lush, juicy and very moreish with a hint of bitter chocolate and sweet black cherry character.

Ruby red colour with violet tints showing its youth. On the nose it is fresh and elegant with characteristic aromas of cherry and red fruits typical of this variety. Light, harmonic and round on the palate with soft tannins.

Natural wine from Simon Coulshaw: no cultured yeast, enzymes, chemical tannins or fining product. 90% 130 yr old-vine Cinsault, 10% Syrah. I was instructed to chill this a bit before tasting. It was in the fridge for about 25 minutes and then left out for 10 minutes before tasting. Fresh red-berried nose. Hurrah! Here is another Languedoc producer who 'gets' Cinsault. Perky, bright, raspberries and with that lovely telltale Cinsault salty-sweet tang that always reminds me of the best prosciutto or jamon. A bit of white pepper and ground cumin tangled into feather-light sinews of tannin. This is absolutely YUM. Tapas/aperitivo wine, without a doubt. I could drink this all summer long. This is simply outstanding wine for the money, soft super-juicy ripe plummy fruit and a long full-flavoured finish.This easy-drinking wine comes from Chile's renowned Valle Central Region, where long hot days are followed by cool nights. This temperature difference ensures the grapes ripen slowly, so they develop maximum flavour.

Damien Pagès is the grandson of Marc Pagès (who took on Château la Tour de By in 1966). Château Noaillac is situated 15 kilometres north of Château la Tour de By. Planted to approximately 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, with an average age of 40 years. Damien is a qualified oenologue and a brilliant winemaker. CWM Ranking - High 2:1 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot. 12 months in french oak. Damien Pages believes this is one of his best vintages. Although it was a small harvest there was enough rain in June and August to allow the old vines produce healthy grapes. Very dark ruby. Ripe cassis nose with some vanilla and spice. Fine and poised palate, all rather silky and fresh yet with plenty of blackcurrant and plum flavour, and ripe tannin. Full bodied and well-balanced.

This seamless blend of Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet has created an enticing wine that exceeds all expectations. Ripe fruits of dark cherry, blackberry, plum and raspberry are complimented by the secondary notes of vanilla and mixed spices. The silky, satin like fruit profile, encompassed by lovely ripe tannins, cascades effortlessly through the palate providing fantastic depth and the WOW factor.

An Auslese from a vineyard as revered as the Bernkasteler Badstube, with almost a decade of ageing under its belt, is a vanishingly rare find at this price. The typical clarity of Riesling shines through, with lime marmalade accompanying a plethora of ripe fruit notes - pineapple, cantaloupe melon, physalis. A delight now, but this has a long life ahead of it.
