This is the most impressive du Glana I have tasted, a full bodied fruity wine with excellent concentration, sweet creamy black fruits and a well-balanced long finish. There were many very good Saint-Julien wines in 2022 but I think this is the best value of them.

Parker 92/100 "...a blend of Lagrein and Dolcetto and is a vivid purple in the glass. Dark, moody, distinct, pure in its dark way and spicy to boot. You get anise, licorice, peppercorns, layers of raspberry and blackberry and also blueberry, blood plum and fennel. It's a ripper. Dark and lusty... This was tasted blind as part of the "Value for Money" tasting in September 2023."

Azienda Agricola Vicentini Agostino
Vicentini is a family business where Agostino works with his wife, Teressa, and their children Emanuele and Francesca. Based in San Zeno, a village at the mouth of the Val d‘Illarsi which resides inside both the Soave and Valpolicella DOCs, but is outside of their respective Classico zones. But don't let this last point cloud your vision to their outstanding wines produced in two distinct and great terroirs. The first terroir is on volcanic rock within the Valle dei Ciliegi, here the land is largely responsible for their "Valpolicella" and "Soave Casale". The second terroir is on limestone in the commune of Terrelunghe, where Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave are grown for the 'Terrelunghe' Soave. Select bunches of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara from the steep terraces in the valley of cherries. Macerated and wild fermentation takes place at controlled temperature for nearly three weeks with gentle pump overs. Softly pressed and put to tonneaux for 18 months. In bottle a further two years before release. This is really fine Valpolicella. The volcanic soils in the vineyards help produce a rich wine with elegance, purity and finesse. Cherry, dark red fruits with hints of cedar and dried fig are interwoven into a beautiful expression. Utterly wonderful.

Domaine La Loyane
Laure Dubois runs this excellent estate with her husband Romain and has fully converted to Organic farming. The wines they produce are consistently good and elegant, mainly from the Lirac appellation, north West of Chateauneuf-du-Pape but also this Cotes du Rhone from just outside. The 2022 is the third year in five vintages that the wine has won a coveted Coup de Coeur top award in the Guide Hachette, the 'bible' of French wine. Charming, 'irresistible' and ready to drink it also offers outstanding value for money. Domaine La Lôyane was voted Winemaker of the Year in 2018 by the Guide Hachette. La Lôyane refers to the place where the estate is built, a place formerly occupied by wolves! The estate, founded in 1994, is located in the south of the Rhône Valley, near Avignon in the Lirac cru. The Dubois family has been cultivating its 20 hectares of vines there for 4 generations! And the last, with Romain Dubois, has converted the estate to organic farming. An extremely precise estate, which is constantly moving upmarket and producing wines from vines that are sometimes more than a century old!

From the 2023 vintage the Brajkovitch family have blended the grapes from their new Rays Road vineyard (Hawke's Bay) with some outstanding richer Kumeu fruit with delicious results. The wine displays a bright cherry red /burgundy colour with lifted red fruit aromas. Has to be one of the best-value most impressive French red wines on the UK market. Special edition made for us by famed Chateauneuf grower Roger Sabon, the wine-maker is esteemed Didier Negron. Charmingly honest, hearty (15%!), herbal, dense and punchy, juicy red from the classic southern varieties of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault & friends. What a beauty, what a bargain. Although full-bodied the wine has soft tannins and a silky texture - this is the beauty of Southern Rhone reds, ready to enjoy as soon as they're made, unlike Bordeaux or Burgundy. Grenache in this hot sunny heaven gives ripe raspberry and black cherry notes and depth, Syrah gives a classic black pepper spice and dark-chocolate grip. A cool fennel / mint edge and lift. 'Declassified' as Vin de France, but this is not a 'negoce' wine made from bought-in grapes: all the grapes come from Sabon estates, and winemaking is by Didier Negron, as per their top wines. About Roger Sabon: Domaine Roger Sabon came into being in 1952 when the family vineyards were split into three distinct entities (the other two being Domaine Chante-Cigale and Clos Mont Olivet). Robert Parker, who awarded their 1988 vintage a perfect 100 rating, the first Chateauneuf-du-Pape so honoured, has this to say about Domaine Roger Sabon: “This estate has been at the top of its game for many years and any partisan of Rhone Valley wines… who has not yet tried a wine from Domaine Roger Sabon should make every effort to do so... Best drinking from 2025 through 2031+ Expressive aromatics, with flint, Meyer lemon, and a subtle short bread note. A well-rounded palate with volume and mouthfeel. Flavours of passion and stone fruit, sweet herbs and a fine boned acid finish. Enjoy with sushi, mussels, oysters and light salads.

Chateau Beau Site
74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Low yields of 17 hl/ha following the hail storm in June and the deep gravels the Cabernet is planted on. 14.0% ABV. 40% new oak. What is made is very good, clean and long with precise extraction and ripe but not overripe fruit. It derives from a gravel "croupe" near Calon-Ségur. "Beau-Site" means beautiful site and lies just behind Grand Cru Château Calon-Segur on one of Medoc's highest points with fantastic views over the river Gironde. It was originally classified as a Cru Bourgeois Superieur in 1932 but in 1966 Beau Site was reclassified as a Cru Grand Bourgeois Exceptionnel. The Castéja family, who also own Château Batailley and Château Trotte Vieille, bought the château in 1955. The château has nearly 100 hectares of vines with an average age of 35 years. Beau-Site's 18th century underground cellar is one of the oldest in the Médoc and presents the perfect maturing conditions for a wine that is vinified with the same care and technique as a Grand Cru Classé. Beau-Site's wine is full of power and temperament, a typical Saint-Estèphe with tannins allowing for keeping this wine for some years.
