Wild & Wilder
2020 vintage conditions in were perfect in many ways. A warm, dry early season gave way to a mild, sometimes cool, February and March which allowed for ripening at a very relaxed pace. Small yields across all regions concentrated the fruit flavours while the dry conditions led to low disease pressures. A vibrant, textural white with hints of almond blossom, quince and ripe pear. Tangy, almost exotic but pithy and delicious.

Ben Glaetzer
Ben Glaetzer sources the fruit for this exceptional wine from the Ebenezer subdistrict of the Barossa. The vines are between 50 and 130 years old, and as a result play a significant role in hot dry years like this one. It’s intensely concentrated yet beautifully smooth and textural. The oak and fruit balance is spot on with the tannins sitting comfortably within. It’s a 100% new oak contribution of largely French, and the fruit has absorbed it perfectly. Bottled unfiltered.

Plantagenet
Crazy good-value new Pinot from Plantagenet Wines, a long-established and famed Western Oz family winery. Delicate though richly complex, silky-smooth, nutmeg and clove spiced, subtle in all respects, a real charmer. Very, very good value at half the price of their signature wines - rarely in the wine world is one so surprised at a Pinot Noir being so underpriced. Plantagenet, founded 1974, have been awarded 5-Star Winery status ten years running by Australia's leading wine critic James Halliday. All fruit hand-picked and estate-grown, just a little oak, a fine, proud example of cool-climate Oz Pinot.

The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar- and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture.

Innocent Bystander
This pink Moscato is highly aromatic with aromas of blackcurrant, Turkish delight, pink grapefruit and mandarin with a hint of candy floss. The wine effortlessly blends the natural sweetness, crisp acidity and fizz to create an easy drinking wine that is still refreshing while being delightfully fruity. “Aussie Moscato doesn’t come better than this. Bright fuchsia colour with a fine froth of foam; pristine muscat aromatics and intense fruit flavour, which persists and satisfies, and doesn’t rely on sugar. Ageing: Don’t wait.” - Huan Hooke

Penfolds
Aged for 18 months in French oak hogsheads (57% new, 43% one year old) "Blackish purple. Intensely high-toned but tight – not opulent – as though it's desperately trying to be serious! On the nose, it would be fun to slide this in to a blind tasting of young Hermitages! Smooth as silk!!! Maybe that should be Guigal Côte Rôties rather than Hermitages… As with the Bin 707, I could drink this tonight, despite knowing it will blossom into something even more complex and has quite enough tannin under that glorious fruit to develop over many years. Obviously the dry finish mandates some assertive food with this. Scrummy. Or should I say delicious as I think 'scrummy' was rather derided last time I used it? Great balance and nothing over the top." Drink 2021 - 2040 Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com (Jul 2021)

Penfolds
First made in 1959, Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is Penfolds earliest Bin-range wine named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945. The early releases were single-vineyard wines and Bin 28 was first made while Grange was still being made in secrecy. Today, Kalimna Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. Matured for 12 months is seasoned American oak hogsheads, Bin 28 displays a heady mix of aromas. At first, back to school memories of black jelly beans, then a gentle spectral gradation to red liquorice and red currants alongside wild raspberry and a red-fruited chutney. The palate is well-balanced with whirling black fruits and flavours akin to a consommé of dried porcini mushrooms, well balanced tannins and subtle tobacco leaf notes

Vasse Felix
Vasse Felix, Margaret River’s founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. d'Arenberg
Wine of the Year, London Wine Competition, 2020. 92+, Parker Points. 94, Sarah Ahmed, Decanter. Legend. Parker "...formidably dense and concentrated on the palate. Notes of charred wood join plums, raspberries and black olives in this full-bodied effort. With its current surly disposition, it appears to require decanting or several years' sleep in a cool cellar. Giving it air helped bring out purple raspberries and softened the considerable tannins, so I'm optimistic about its future evolution."
