Ancient vine Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo from high altitude in this exciting Catalan region that surrounds Priorat. Oak aged, rich, textured white that takes a while to reveal its personality but is so fine when it does. Fish soup, fine Asian pork dishes, Pork Belly are all good matches.
One of the revelations of 2019 was tasting the 2018 Acustic Celler Rosat. WHAT A WINE! It would be hard to better, but this wine is without doubt, the equal.
100% Grenache, from 40-80 years old vines. The wine fermented in barrels for 6 months and the result is a deep-flavoured but elegant and fresh rosé with a bright pink in the robe and inviting aromas of pure raspberries, cassis, and some rose petals. On the palate it is more profound and serious, due to the partial aging in oak. A lot more substance than your usual rosé.
Oz Clarke 96 points (2014 vintage) "Wonderfully exhilarating Garnacha from the fringes of Priorat. It has shimmering blackcurrant and apple flesh fruit, mouthwatering acidity and a slap of herbs, and yet you can still taste the heat in the grapes."
Truly outstanding Garnacha.
The 2018 Ritme Negre has some meaty notes reminiscent of some wines from the Northern Rhône. It's a blend of 70% Cariñena and 30% Garnacha, similar to the 2018 Acustic from its sibling project in Montsant, with a similar aromatic profile but with some more rusticity and dustier tannins. This is also ripe but without excess, and it has juicy fruit and measured oak after 10 months in French oak barrels.
The top white here is from very, very old vineyards of Xarel lo, Xarel lo Vermell, Macabeu and Malvasia de Sitges, fermented and aged for 8 months in big French oak barrels and a small number of amphoras. There is a bigger nose than the 'Autòcton' definitely shows more oak influence, but it is a very pleasing and subtle toastiness from the big barrels. Again a creamy, layered texture and a considerable richness of old-vine fruit intensity, still fresh and shapely with power on the finish.
Made from native Catalan varietals, a blend of Xarello, Macabeo and Xarello Vermell (a local strain that is almost Rosé) and 2% Malvasía de Sitges. The palate is balanced, nicely crafted, approachable and easy.
Tros de Mas Vilella comes from the vineyards of Mas Vilella estate. Extremely poor and rocky land with very low yields of 15-20 hl/hectare. Made with 50% Sumoll and 50% Cabernet Suvignon. Wine harvested and selected by hand. The wine was aged in amix of French oak barrels of 400L and amphora for 12 months.
"Dense notes of macerated strawberries are followed seamlessly by those oh-so-glorious classic Tondonia notes of autumn bonfires and vanilla. But the 2008’s aromas move seamlessly into more delicate, almost ethereal layers of astonishing complexity – with dried cranberries, evolving into sweet, fresh raspberries. A blend of 70% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacho, with the remaining 10% a mix of Graciano and Mazuelo, the palate is surprisingly tight with lots of super-fine tannins. Initially ultra-fresh, the wine mellows with air, transforming into a gentle and glorious wine with savoury hints of marmite and cured meat, spiralling away into an endless finish. Warm, delicious, elegant and exhilarating, this is more in line with the cool 2006 than other recent vintages. A wine worthy of any cellar."

Valbuena is moving on up. Undoubtedly it needs time to blossom, but the building blocks are firmly in place. The oak is very refined, the fruit is dark and intense. Yet it's fresh, and with a welcome savoury spice to counterbalance the richness. The finish is very long, with a fine texture and that keynote lift of acidity
2015 Pintia is showing the results of work started in 2008 on the vineyard and in the winery. The palate will always be dense – after all, this is Toro. But the aromatics are tempting, with lively refined oak and red fruits. The acidity is bright. It's a wine that needs time. My score is 93-plus – I'd like to come back to it nearer its drinking time and reassess it. Pintia is emerging as a relative of Vega Sicilia that’s very much worth following.
...5% of the barrels were produced with American oak at the Vega Sicilia cooperage. The new winery was 100% ready and now has much better facilities. The élevage lasted 12 months, and this has contained ripeness and integrated oak. The year had freshness and balance and helped to produce lighter and more expressive wines, like this one. This has to be one of the finest vintages for this cuvée.
DWWA 2017 Best in Show -Appetising concentrated nose showing characterful fruit, orange skin, white flowers, and intense nutty aromas; a rich palate, complex, with lots of apples and a touch of sweet miso. Delicate and open, with long finish, a gorgeous manzanilla. Comes in a lovely gift box with copita glasses and Perello olives

Mid-deep ruby. Ripe, red-cherry fruit, with beautifully layered clove and cedar oak spice notes. Lovely integration of oak and fruit. Well crafted, though there’s a good backbone of fine tannins that will carry it through for a decade from now.
Old low-yield vineyards, located in Quintanilla de Onésimo, with great mesoclimate and soil conditions. Aged 14 months in second hand French oak barrels.
Deep purple ruby, youthful. Cool, menthol, blueberry, graphite nose, exciting. Intense palate, plenty of tannins but chock full of bramble, blueberry fruit, decent acidity and earnest concentration. Will be very good from 2021 onwards.
El Valiente is a fruity wine but maintaining the essence of Bodegas Valdaya, with floral memories, such as violet and balsamic. It maintains the classic elegant character of their wines but offering a more fruity and lovely profile. Very fresh with a delightful velvety texture.

Tondonia's reds have been on an upward curve recently and are now at the same level as the bodega's world-class whites. This is a fine, elegant, savoury, low-alcohol blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Mazuelo and Graciano, combining summer berry fruit, racy acidity, granular tannins and an earthy, balsamic undertone. Good now, but this will develop further in bottle. 2020-28

Splendidly evolved, orange/brick red, almost-pinot-like delicacy with a hot-earth rusticity and nutmeg spice. Highly drinkable, stunning value.
Tim Atkin 93/100 "Cubillo is a later-picked site with more clay in the soil and tends to produce the lightest, freshest and most elegant of the López de Heredia reds. Floral, refined and delicately wooded, this is sweet, delicate and almost Pinot Noir-like in terms of its flavors and tannin structure."
1995 was an excellent and early harvest, the grapes achieved full ripeness and were harvested under the sun during two weeks starting October 9. The wine, which exceptionally achieved 13% alcohol, is the usual blend, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena). Like all their wines, it fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak vats and as a Gran Reserva it matured in old American oak barrels for ten years! Yes, it was bottled in November 2006 and launched in 2015, a full 20 years after the harvest. This light-colored, ethereal 1995 is the essence of Viña Tondonia. It has developed aromas and complexity gained with the time in bottle, of incense, leather, cured meat, cherries in liqueur, cold bonfire and spices. The palate is super-tasty, with fully-resolved tannins and very good acidity. The texture is super-fine, sophisticated and ethereal with gob-smacking balance. Intense, powerful and elegant, too. Hard to believe, but this red feels too young and while approachable, I'd wait a couple of years or more because it will be much better. The profile follows the style of the great classics of the 1950s and 60s. Bottles like this are the ones that created the López de Heredia myth. This could be lighter than the 1994, but in the long run I believe the 1995 will be the better bottle.
Superb (cool) vintage of this archetype of ultra-traditional white Rioja. Late October harvest but bone dry, 4 years in cask. Evolved and tertiary but precise with citrus clarity and lift. All manner of nut, pastry, exotic woods and spice emerge from its complexity. A whiff of mature Meursault, a nod to palo Cortado. Parker 95/100 "simply stunning...has to be one of the best vintages for Via Gravonia"
100% Tempranillo. The Celeste begins with a really lovely and expressive nose of dark fruit (blackberry, black cherry, black currant) as well as some vanilla. This medium to full-bodied wine wine tastes simply succulent with lots of juicy fruit and a smooth texture.
This stylish Albarino is a stand out great value white. Poised, with fresh acidity and a touch of Atlantic salinity it also has serious weight of fruit and concentration, with a rich citrusy palate and long finish. Try it with prawns, bass, hake, anything from the sea, or on its own.
The Bardos Reserva is an elegant high-altitude expression of Ribera del Duero wine made from low-yielding Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 14 months in oak, it has excellent structure from balanced tannins and acidity, alongside complex notes of dark fruit, chocolate and vanilla spice.
This is Rioja at its precocious youthful best, with intense raspberry and black cherry fruit overlayed with a flourish of vanilla and coconut from 4 months in American oak. It is beautifully balanced with medium weight and cushioned by fine grain tannins." Ted Sandbach
A small family-run bodega near the village of Navarrete, in the heart of Rioja D.O.C., making wines of great integrity and some finesse. It was founded in 1918 and is today run by Antonio Navajas and his wife. This is a big favourite of many of our customers and on a 'value for money' basis it is not hard to understand why.
Pale straw color with tiny bubble rising from the bottom! Green apple, pear and hint yeasty on the nose. On the palate, green apple, apple, yeasty, with toasty and almondy aftertaste, and smooth round texture! This Cava hits my sweet spot by the sur lee and nutty flavors
Born and raised in La Rioja, Spain, Raúl Acha emits the same daring spirit as his wine producing ancestry. Like his family, he thrives on finding off-the-beaten-track projects in creating new wines that uniquely express each region. Proyecto Garnachas de Espana is Raul’s personal quest in protecting and restoring the glory of the now relegated secondary grape, Garnacha or Grenache. Armed with his expertise, he ventures off to discover unique plots of Grenache within the country to create these single varietal wines.
Very old bush vines planted in 1940 and grown at high altitude on the banks of the Ribota river, this is a wild and wonderful Grenache, intense, oaky, profound and yet moreish. Brilliant value for money
A fine Manzanilla that's powerfully aromatic. Fresh, with a salty tang, with plenty of acidity together with a very satisfying lemon twist to the finish. A natural Product with plenty of colour, weight and concentration.
Straightforward, crispy and delicious. Apple and citrus set the tone. Colour is pale yellow and nose is fruity and floral. Quite a lot of weight and some leesy complexity. A lot of nice dry white for the money.
