Champagne Paul Dethune Tasting hosted by Sophie Dethune

We will be taking this tasting back to our Bridge Street Wine Bar.

Déthune is one of the oldest family growers in the first-rate Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, where they have farmed and made wine since the early 1600s.

The village is famous for big serious Champagnes which can age for decades, and of course for Krug’s esteemed Clos d’Ambonnay walled vineyard which produces one of all Champagnes greatest wines – at £1500 a bottle, you’d hope so!

The Déthunes started as growers in the early 1800s and began to make their own Champagne in the 1930s.

The vineyards are planted in the ratio of 70% Pinot Noir to 30% Chardonnay and are farmed on organic principles – and hold the highest level HEV (High Environmental Value) certificate for sustainable viticulture. This immaculate 7 hectare domaine goes from strength to strength. Pierre and Sophie Déthune are friends of the Fournys and this Ambonnay domaine is amongst the loveliest and best cared for in the whole of Champagne.

The Champagnes are vinified in a mix of stainless steel cuves, foudres and 205 litre barrels, the oak all being sourced from local forests. Their wines are deep, rich and full, but with lovely freshness and elegance. They also put the date of disgorging on the back of each bottle, which is never less than three years prior to release, which again underlines their attention to detail. These are all very fine mouthfilling wines and as Michael Edwards says, “Pierre Déthune intelligently adopts tradition to craft wines of exuberance and vinosity.”

We are very fortunate that Sophie Déthune will be with us to entertain and taste through her range of super-classy Champagnes.

Wines on show:

Grand Cru Brut NV

Millésime 2008

Cuvée Prestige Princesse des Thunes Grand Cru Brut NV

Cuvée à l’Ancienne Grand Cru Brut NV

Champagne Rosé Grand Cru Brut NV

Ratafia Champenois

This promises to be a fun and educational evening with some seriously impressive Champagnes on show!

See you there!

This year, our goal is the same but we event want to go a bit ahead and we have customized new tastings that will surprise you.
We are keeping the most popular wine tastings from very well-known regions in Spain and we have added two new wine tastings that we hope you will enjoy them. They are focused on the grapes rather than in the "terroir"; so we will taste how Spanish grapes taste in other parts of the world where they are being grown and how grapes from other countries are adding a special "bouque" to the Spanish wines.

13th March: North of Spain
15th May: La Rioja
17th July: East Coast
18th September: Spanish grapes in the world

The Wine and Tapas Tasting is £37.50 per person and includes 5 wines and 5 tapas. You can get a 5% discount if you book three together or 10% discount if you book 5. To claim this offer please contact the branch directly.
